1. I had a very small round file that i used for it, but it was only small enough for the E string, i used a nail file for the rest.
2.
I thought the width of the slot is fairly critical? Or is it just a case of making sure the string sits snuggly in the bottom curve of the slot?
I've done it before and it takes a lot to actually make a critical mistake. If you use fairly thin files, that shouldn't happen. As long as the width of the hole is about right, it should be fine.
3. You can use regular nail files, though if you want something that might take a bit more off, try some metal files, a quick search on machine mart brought these up
4. I polished my frets on my $$ today because i was bored, and i thought i'd post some photos! They looked a bit tarnished, but christ, i didn't know they were THAT bad! Anyways, pix: All taped up so as not to scuff the wenge fretboard: Urgh, nasty, dirty frets: First fret polished (crap photos, it really was a big difference though): Masking tape off and after a nice coat of lemon oil: close up, Yum! : It looks lovely and shiny new now good stuff!
5.
The glib answer would be "because they could". The seller doesn't say when the extra pickup was added, but what you have to remember is that back in the 70s this was not a particularly special bass. The desirable Fenders were all pre-CBS so this was just another instrument with the same perceived value that mid-range modern Ibanez or Yamaha has now. There wasn't the same massive range of basses in every conceivable configuration that are available nowadays, so if you wanted something even slightly different from the norm you had to do it yourself. Also decent power tools were strictly for professionals only so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find a fairly crude hole for the pickup made with a hammer and chisel. It's a product of it's age. Get over it.
+1, a lot of you guys don't think twice about modding your mid range basses, but in 30 years time, someone will be saying "Why would they do that to such a bass? It's old, it's rare etc etc", but you have to remember, when it was probably done, it was "just a p-bass"
6. That vigier is gorgeous! And is that a 20th musicman stingray? sweeet good luck with the sale
7.
A 5 string black beauty with black hardware and white leds.............. Oh dear I've gone faint
Noooonononono, you've got it all wrong! 4 string black beauty with gold hardware and red LEDs obviously

9. christ, bet that cost you a bit! I love that birdseye one never tried a wal before though, would love to one day.
10. I'm glad they don't make basses like that anymore!

12.
never occured to me that guitars could ever be worth as much as basses. Never expected a guitar to have a price tag at over 1K but yet I'm quite happy to expect a bass at that price level. How odd...
Yeah, ESP guitars are quite expensive, plus the pre gibson lawsuit explorers (the curvy ones, as opposed to the newer spiky ones) go for a lot of money because they're rarer and they look nicer, and considering this is pretty much a one off, worth rather a lot!
13.
Not the exact one of course, but it's very like it. I'll trade it for a Wal.
To be fair, whether hetfielf ever played this or not, it's worth a LOT of money, either way. Coincidentally, my friend has a jackson RR1 in white, an edwards les paul custom in ebony and an edwards forest neck thru, any of which he would be willing to trade for that ESP (maybe even two), drop me a PM matey? EDIT: says he'll trade you his RR1 and edwards les paul for that (in case you're not in the know, edwards is the japanese division of ESP, so obviously jap made, cost him about 1K)
14. nice one, they're really nice basses them, great price that too, i paid that for a used one!
15. D'oh! i actually fell for that, having only just read it On a related note, i have a small cash donation for basschat still left over from the nottingham bass bash if it is actually needed? Otherwise it'll go to a musical charity or something.
16. oh wow, that's a lovely colour! I should really get cracking on my musicman! I have a couple of weeks of college now though, so i'll see what happens.
17. wow, looking very very nice
18. nice one, looks good
19. that's a pretty bass
20.
I've noticed a proliferation in the numbers of 'Dads Bands' around at the minute. You can see them all over. They're young. Their dads ferry them to 'gigs' and set the gear up for them while they stand around looking vaguely interested. They spend the whole night playing power chords learnt from Tab off the internet while adoring jailbait looks on. The dads stand at the back nodding all the way through and then pack up the gear at the end. The upshot? It's all done for them! They haven't had to do it for themselves. As a kid I had to bus 6 miles to practices then carry my amp and bass about a mile (stopping for many rests) so that by the time I got there I could hardly play. When you learnt your favourite songs you had to LISTEN to the Record ...NO REALLY LISTEN and work out what was going on. You learnt the subtleties. You learnt your trade. You couldn't just google it. So I think your answer lies in the fact that the future generation of bands are missing out on the 'serving your time' part. Also the standard of affordable guitars and basses you learnt on back then, or should I say Planks (hondo etc.), was pretty poor in comparison to what young 'uns have today (not that Dad hasn't bought them a Les Paul anyway). Anyway....Rant over. Ps. Apologies to anyone who helps out with their son's band but you get my point.
My dad has no interest in the music i play and really wouldn't waste his time setting up for me. I don't know where you go to see bands, but i haven't noticed this anywhere. If you want to waste time setting up your son's band or whatever it is you have against us kids, you do it, but don't drag the rest of us down with them. my dad has driven me to 2/3 band practices/gigs before. I make an effort to get to band pracices/gigs MYSELF. Go watch some better bands mate.
21.
A lot of metal genres need new names. It's funny that being "Progressive" now means recreating music from the '70s.
You think so? i think progressive means playing something that hasn't been played before. There's plenty of progresive bands these days that don't sound 70's at all.
22.
As opposed to being biased towards everything? As it stands, they seem so scared of upsetting the manufactures, that their reviews have very little value. Stuart Clayton once claimed on here that it's because most gear these days was fit for purpose. What a load of crap! If thats the case, then the bar has to be raised! "Fit for purpose" is clearly now the norm - review accordingly! I'm sure that even the contributers of BGM know its crap.
I don't think there's really such thing as a bad bass these days, at least not above the £200 price bracket. And when you're paying a lot of money for one, it's not going to have many factory defects (unless it's a fender) and it will be fit for SOMEONE out there. I'm not a fan of fender jazzes partiocularly, but i know a lot of people like them.
23. I think it's fairly interesting, i'm not too sure what you guys all have against it... BBC, you complain about a lack of opinion. I'm pretty sure you, and everyone else would complain if they were biased towards certain things... say warwicks for example?
24. go back to the jazz, nicer bass IMO nah i joke, the harsh angles on my musicman SUB used to hurt my wrist a little, but i found when playing standing up it didn't happen, but i just got on with it anyway.
25. cool bass! cool price too, good luck with the sale.
