Just need a double bass i could hire for 3-4 days starting from tomorrow or sunday, does anyone knows any place i could hire one near leeds area? or does anyone got a spare one i could hire? ill pay in advance plus i would live you one of my basses. thanxs all in advance regards Antonio
What sort of gig? I'm in Wakefield not too far away. The DB is a cheaper Hybrid (solid top, ply back and sides) with Velvet Animas and a Full Cirlce pup. Med-high action. Set up for pizz more than arco.

Fantastic job. The cab build quality looks great. I tried to build various BFM cabs but I just suck at carpentry. I tried and failed. It's great to see them built properly.

A seam crack should be easy to fix, preferably by a luther unless you have you hide glue technique together. This has happened a few times on my beast. I look at a double bass as a living thing that needs constant maintainence, some frequent some infrequent.

I'd rather it happen on stage than off. He just finished playing a solo and his bass disintegrated. Good stuff. Well worth the cheering.

Subscribed. I really enjoyed my time with Honeys, they sounded great on my bass. Innovation seem to have a string for just about everyone. Thanks for taking this on daf.

Good stuff, welcome to the wonderful world of DB There are some good low tension strings out there, Innovation make a variety, Velvet do some but can be pricey, Presto lights which are synthetic strings. Maybe Spiro lights if you want to use steel strings. Depends on the tone you're after and pickup choice if you use one. Might be worth finding a DB teacher and get a few lessons. This will help you get a sound fondation for your technique and help limit injury. Try a search in the DB here section or look through the topic titles and you should be able to find out what string for what tone you're after. Also, Talkbass has an extensive DB section that's worth a looksie.

I prefer watching/listening to Esperanza Spalding

I used one for over a year, gigs ranging from small pubs to 1000 seat venues. It's the pickup that sounded best on my bass so far with the Full Circle in second place. My only gripe was it being fiddly to fit and keep in position for a constant tone. Taking the bass in out of it's gig bag, the thing would get knocked and need 5 mins to get it back where you want it. Also, the gap that it fits into needs to be snug. Wood moves with temperature and it would affect the way the pickup was held in the wing slot e.g it would get really tight when hot, and a little too loose when cold. They really do sound great, not too boomy like a Basmax, and almost airy like a mic. It did usable levels without feedback. Worth a try to see if it works on your bass.

Powered speaker as alternative to amp for double bass?
TPJ replied to tharidla's topic in EUB and Double Bass
They reproduce what you put in, if you need more umph they don't do that. Friends of mine use one regularly for vocals, key and double bass and they're over the moon with it. I got two for p.a. and only need to use one on most gigs, and that's putting vocals, sax, keys and some bass tn through a Mackie mixer. (I usually have a small bassamp for personal monitoring)
This is the L1 Compact your speaking about? Maybe we just play too loud We use it for on stage monitoring of all vocals and guitar and run the DB through a bass amp otherwise you just lose the db. It works great in coffee house/open mic situations but when we've tried running everything through, it poops out. Mind you we do get loud for an acoustic trio -
Powered speaker as alternative to amp for double bass?
TPJ replied to tharidla's topic in EUB and Double Bass
These are excellent, I used mine with the Kolstein Travel Bass that Clarky now owns, faithful reproduction and good coverage.
I don't know. IME they lack the umph you need for DB. We use one with our acoustic dou/trio and the L1 Compact just didn't have enough volume to give good clarity with the DB. They're great for guitar and voice but really lacked when it comes to DB. The regular Bose are probably better suited but stupidly expensive. -
Plucking finger blisters - to burst or not to burst>
TPJ replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I used to burst them, but only from sheer ignorance. Burst -> tear -> raw skin dries -> callous. Seemed to work through the early years. Haven't really had a blister in years though...think I'd try the surgical spirits out of curiosity. -
Anyone got the WinISD driver file for the Kappalite 3015?

Fitted my pickup to someone else's bass - bugger!
TPJ replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I'd pop for a Full Circle. Not cheap but they are reportedly more consistant with all types of bass, expensive to cheap. I've used a Fishman bp100, Upton Revolution II, BasMax and the FC. I liked the tone of the Upton best but it was fiddly to get and keep in the sweet spot. The Bassmax was very bassy and needed taming. The FC is very usable with a good solid tone. One of the downsides is that the piezo wheel wants to be a certain direction for best results which means your action height may need to change. I'm sure if installed by a luthier you can get it right. If it aint right for your bass you can get good second hand money for them. -
I think there has to be a distinction between worrying about the acoustic sound and the amplified sound. It seems legit to want the amplified sound to at least sound like a double bass, and that bit seems to take some time and expense. It's bound to be the same as with bass guitar anyhow - what sounds good solo mightn't be best in the mix. As for the acoustic sound, it's nice when it's nice, but I'm going to be the only person who notices, assuming that miking up is for higher beings anyhow.
I struggle with this Half my playing is acoustic and that's the sound I try hardest to match with the "sound in my head". The amplified tone I don't worry so much about as every room is different and the tone can be tweaked enough to work with the amp. The acoustic beast is sooo challenging. We play the same music each week in the same room and it's slightly different every week. Temperature, strings, standing in a different spot...it can dive you mad

Thanks for the straight ahead purchase of your Velvet Anima strings. Pleasure doing business with you.
No rhythm? Yeah. Like a train A lot of popular music is based around a definitive and explixit beat. Boom, Whack, boom, whack, boom whack. All beat and no grove. Listen to Bach. No beat there either.
I don't necessarily agree, todays music is just a different groove. What you (general you, not specific) might try to understand is what Jaco did at the time was new, nobody was doing that sort of thing on electric bass. Looking back on it can be difficult as so much has happened musically since then, it may make it harder to appreciate. Jaco is an influence on a lot of todays music whether you hear it or not.

A lot of comments in this thread are from people who don't own one or haven't used a BA in anger. I find it hard to read comments like "I haven't tried one, but..." or "I played one for a few minutes in a store..." Sorry but to me that's just speculation. I can totally understand comments about the looks as they're not for everyone (even though they look better in the flesh), but to comment about how it "might sound" or "may be too complicated" with out using one in a band setting is not fair to the instrument. I'm not a complete fan but the bass covers a lot of ground and is quite straight forward to use, it just takes a little time to find the settings that are right for you.
I have been looking at Thompson double basses on String Emporium. They're plywood, look great, the testimonials all are over the top, and they go for $1450. Has anyone played or owned one? If so, please take a minute to write about it. Thanks. TG
How would you get it to the UK? Shipping a db can cost hundreds before VAT and Customs. You might do as well looking at the Thomann ones.
