1. I ran Honeys for a couple of years. Loved them. I may try the black Rocakabillys after the Evah's wear out.
  2.
@ TPJ I was afraid someone would say that I guess I'm trying to avoid having to change both strings and p/u. Interesting about your adjustable setting showing little thread. Mine shows lots of thread. In any case, I think I need to get some shims put under to give me more adjustment (or a new bridge?). How bad was the pop when you had it? Did you have to EQ out all the mids?
I had to eq a bit to try and get rid but it never totally disappeared. Over half my playing is acoustic so I was never too bugged by it until the pup died. I spoke with my luthier about the threads and he preferred to see less than more. He'd had a bass in where the bridge became unstable becasue there wasn't enough wood to hold the screws in the feet of the bridge. You might be able to just get new feet instead of a whole bridge. I'd offer to loan you another pup to see if it's the K&K giving you the problems but the only other pup I have is an old Fishman BP100 and it is dire (on my bass anyway). You're still welcome to try it though. PM me if you want and I'll post it too you. If your happy with the acoustic tone of your bass I'd leave the strings alone and try and sort the amplified tone.
  3. I used a BassMax when my bridge was nonadjustable and then after I had the adjusters put on. I used to get that pop with both setups using Innovation Honeys and Evah Weichs (both synthetic gut type strings) I prefer having the adjusters as the bass changes a bit over the course of the seasons. It was unplayable two weeks ago until I could reduce the tension by lowering the bridge 1/2 a turn. The bridge adjusters were intentionally installed so they almost touch both sides instead of the threads standing too proud. I now use a Fishman FC and the pop is gone. It may be the combination of pup/strings/bass that is giving you that pop. Can you afford to try another pickup?
  4. AI Focus 1 gets quite warm to the touch but has been like that for years with no problems. I think it's designed to dissipate heat with the case.
  5.
Looks like a great bass Greg. Good luck with your sale. Cheers Geoff
+1
  6. Bit of an update. The BassMax pup had some problem so I replaced it with a Full Circle. My bass already had adjusters so no great shakes installing the Full Circle except for the holes in the top portion of the bridge feet (non threaded side) needed deepening by a few mil. to accmodate the FC adjuster posts. I had to take the bridge to my luthier and leave it with him for a few days whilst I was away for work. Right before the install, the bass was just singing...nice big tone, string height great, string tension perfect. All was great. Now, after loosening the strings and leaving them loose for 4 days, they settled back in to tune quick enough but the tension is really stiff. It's been tuned for over a week or so and several nights worth of playing done but the strings just won't loosen up. Anyone noticed this about these strings in particular?
  7. Nice one, glad it went well for you.
  8.
My main worry at the moment is the sheer size if it, since i'm a not so towering 5' 8", and my hands aren't exactly huge.
You're just like me. You'll be fine, just don't try to do too much at once. Sorry I can't help with the Bristol advice but someone here will know
  9. I use either an Art Tube MP mic preamp into an AI Focus 1 or a DHA DI EQ into the same amp. The DHA is great becasue you can really shape the tone, but no phase reverse. The Art tames the piezo nicely but no eq. Other times I run these preamps into a Mesa Walkabout and that sounds quite nice as well. I'm not sure about using 15" cabs, I've had much better luck with 210s and 112s. List of pickups I've used on my bass (remember everybody's bass responds differently) - Fishman BP100: it didn't work on my bass, too microphonic. Tons of feedback. - Upton Revolution ll: Great pickup and not quite as expensive and the Realist or Fishman Full Circle. A bit fiddly to install but once in it sounds great. - K&K BassMax: Current pup but it's faulty. It has a big almost bass guitar tone to it on my bass. Worked really well. - Now waiting for a Fishman Full Circle to arrive in the post. They are supposed to work well on cheap and expensive basses. You might have a look at the Schatten passive wing pups. Inexpensive wing style pickup similar to the BassMax and Planet Wing.

    Album Launch
Sorry, too far for me, but I checked out the Evenhand Myspace site and love your stuff. A massive variety of styles if I may so so! Cheers, Steve
Thanks Steve. The PMT gig went well and people seemed to be into our music. The acoustic guitar/double bass combo draws the eye and the material works great in this format as well as doing it electric.
  11. I have a pile of those to with the same exact idea . If you google "contact mic" you'll find lots of similar ideas. First one I tried to wrap in heatshrink but the heat caused one of the leads to come undone rendering it useless. I then tried to make something similar to a realist with copper shielding tape but somewhere the connections either came off or the tape bridged the connections. Well worth a go, as long as you're not as inept as me with leccy bits.

    Album Launch

Evenhand are on an album being released by the laboratory project, Pash our guitarist/singer is exec producer. The album launch is Oct 30 at FAC251 The Factory in Manchester. Other bands on the album (is this even the right word to use these days? ) are Drama King, Our Day Remains, Osiris, Fez and Helvelvn II. As a teaser to the launch a few of the bands are playing at PMT in Manchester (Salford) this Saturday throughout the day. I believe all are acoustic-ish sets. It kicks off around 1pm Sat and I think the idea is a band an hour, 20 min set. If anyone is interested come on down. If you want to get into the gig on the 30th PM me, I can get some tickets but need to know how many in advance.
  13.
You're only a few miles away from me if ya fancy coming over for a pick up a / session sometime
Many thanks for the kind offer. I've ordered one today and should have it for next week.
  14.
I am also approaching 30...and decided I needed to treat myself haha!
I use that excuse every year
  15.
The bass is provisionally sold.
Good and bad news as I know how much effort you put into the spec. Someone is going to be a happy camper. I always trawl through the forsale threads thinking I'd like something else but as soon as I play the Recurve I want for nothing.
  16.
Why is this so unloved? It gets shifted around like no ones business and it's so pretty. I almost feel sorry for it.
+1 They sound, play and feel great. The kind of basses that make you play better.
  17.
Oh yeah......Listen to a lot of jazz aswell.
+1
  18. So I think my BassMax is screwed, long story short it makes some odd rustling noises through the amp. I've decided to try a Full Circle this time. I like the big sound from the BM but it can sound too plastic sometimes on my bass. It certainly suited the music we play though and filled out the whole band sound nicely. The FC seems like a logical step as they reportedly work well on cheaper instruments e.g. mine and I'm hoping for a little more open tone yet still maintain some supportive umph. There's bound to be a FC user here. Looking for feedback either way, likes & dislikes etc... PS I nearly went for a DPA mic but I tend to always run into a backline and I just don't think that will work well. We are only 2/3 piece but it can get loud, even with acoustic instruments. I also want to try something that isn't a wing pup.
  19. Found these for sale. I think they are low tension as well. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=105057
  20.
Had first rehearsal with drummer for Elvis show and am using a very cheap chinese bass with Bassmax into fishman pro platt into markbass combo with one 12inch speaker, getting good result plugging into effects return, this only eliminates the pre amp gain as the eq is still functioning on the front but is an improvement from plugging into the input on front of amp as having the pre amp gain to set plus the pro platt input gain and output level just made it more difficult to get the right setting, eliminating the pre amp gain on the amp bye using the effects return made the signal clearer and was easier to adjust, Jez
Where's the show Jez? I'd quite like to come hear that. The Bassmax is a funny beast. It's not as "acoustic" sounding as I'd like (The Rev Solo 2 was great!) but it suits the stuff we play, it sits in the mix well.
  21. Sorry to hear you have to give up playing. If you're selling everything, I'll have the Guinness and Marlboro Lights Seriously, good luck with the sale, that Sandberg looks great!
  22. Love Dave's stuff. I use a Bob the Blender and a non tube DI/EQ. This seems the best of both those worlds Is this the bass version?
  23.
Kent Armstrong do these for £70... bit of glue or velcro and it has a hole through so you can put a small self tapper to the fingerboard, bit noisy cos theres no earthing but i'm gonna try a small line isolator to fix that i have one on my Upright and EUB
Have you got a link on where to buy please
  24. That Corvette looks very cool, a real players bass. Always wanted either one of these or a Fortress One. Plus you're just over the hill from Wakey...too tempting Best of luck for the future and for all the sales bud.
  25. It's great seeing so many see the light. If you look at my sig and follow the Underdrive link to our set list you'll see all the tunes we cover. The format is acoustic guitar and double bass with cajon/percussion thrown in from time to time. It works, it isn't loud, and the punters seem to dig it. There are a few acoustic format tunes on the Evenhand site as well. Once you tackle the physicality of DB, the musical world is once again your oyster.
