1. It may only be roots and fifths but it's ALL about the groove. Get it right and you'll be dancing on the stage. It aint as easy as you think
 2.
However, my favourite is the Orchid Electronics muting DI - cheap, simple and sounds like what you plug into it. Also runs on phantom power, and lets you silently mute/unmute your bass on stage with a discreet foot tap.
What's the input impedance on the Orchid? I couldn't find the rating on the website. All of the preamps I use seem to be 1 megohm. From what I've read a higher input impedance seems to help piezo pickups, but most on the market are only 1 megohm.
 3.
I always fancied fitting a spring to the spike onthe bottom, So i could bounce around on it like a pogo stick
I'd love to try one of these. There's a fully carved one in the TB forsale threads that looks great.
 4. I'll take one of the Spiro's PM'd
 5. I enjoy the facilities on the Focus and can be quite helpful. I realise there isn't a vast amount of eqing available but I like the fact that what you put in you get out. The LP filter can be a god send.
 6. My bass was £450. and have spent £500+ on it with work done, strings, bridges etc... If you're happy with the bass then it's worth investing a little time and ££ to get playing well. I've thought about getting a more expensive one but the bass takes some abuse in our gigging environment and I'd rather knock around a £450 bass instead of a £1500 + bass
 7. Lovely combo of kit this. Does the DPA come with one of the filter thingys? I believe there are two different ones, a flat and one with a cut off.
 8.
FTR I took it to Chapel Allerton Stringed Instruments - Jan is a really nice guy and knows his onions. Lots of locals have recommended him and I can see why.
+1 Jan's the man
 9.
havn't tried Spiro Weichs, but i do have Spiro mediums and the Helicores are abit higher tension but not much in the gauge
Interesting. I always thought Spiro mediums (Orchs) were high tension. If the Helicore lights are higher in tension than the Spiros the might be too tight. Of course all this is speculation as strings react differently to different basses, which leads me into the string game
 10.
Helicore lights any good to you?
How do they compare to Spiro weichs as far as thickness and tension go? I'm finding the weichs a bit thin and not offering enough tension, even with higher action.
 11.
I have a set of Helicore Hybrids... Sounded great on my old Aria Lite but synthetic strings like Honeys were better for the old school vibe. What's the EUB?
The bass is a used BSX Allegro 5. It's tempting to go with Honeys or Rockabillys but I'm not sure how the synthetic strings handle detuning when the bass gets dismantled for travel all the time. Perhaps the all steel strings would deal with that better.
 12. I picked up an EUB recently and it has Spiro Weichs on it. I'm looking for a darker, less growly tone out of it. Any body have a used set of Heli Orchs going spare? I'd like to see if that sort of string would give me the tone I'm looking for out of the bass.
 13. I have one of the Ibanez exotic wood models strung with EB flats. It has a very flexible eq, a phase switch, and a built in DI which has come in handy a few times. I do find it hard to play on long sets as there is no forearm contour. It's still an electric bass, just with different aesthetics. Up to you if you want to use one to fit the vibe.
 14.
I'm now suffering from RDI Repetitive Download Injury.
That's why I just saved it as my desktop image
 15. The spiros are reportedly scratchy sounding when bowed. It can be done but some find it difficult and mainly use them for pizz. Not sure if lower tension will help with the bowing as they may take longer to grab.
 16. I got mine at a discount through someone but the usa prices seem better. Definitely worth the punt though as they consistantly good sounding.
 17.
Hi There I live near Leeds and would appreciate it if you could give me a contact number or e-mail for the famous Jan !! It would be great to have a good luthier on the doorstep. All the best Contrabajo
Here you go. Chapel-Allerton Strings
 18.
Blimey i only took it to Jan a week ago and i now have it back, the work looks really good, and sounds really good, the string height is a bit higher than on my cheapo chinese bass, about 6-7mm on the g string then about 9(d) 10 (a) 9 (e), can really dig in compared to the CCB and has much more tone and volume, sounds like a proper double bass to me , will try it through the acoustic image combo tommorow if i get the bass max fitted in the wing slot, cheers, Jez
Jan is ace. 19. +1 on budget. There's a few currently on ebay too.
 20.
Thanks Roger. For once spending all day on the Internet has proved to be useful :-) better try to do some practice now, no excuses!
Nice score. I contacted fdeck ages ago looking for the new plans for series 2. I found a chap that will build it for me. He still hasn't updated his website with the new schemos. Temped to just get the old one build out of lack of patience.
 21.
I presume there's zip all you can do about this?

I figure we just have to build up the callouses? Its definately getting eaiser as time passes.
I've put superglue on my fingers (very carfully as to not stick them together) before some marathon sessions. Callouses are the preferred thing but the glue can help out in a pinch.
 22.
What am I thinking?
No end like the deep end
 23.
I think I saw a price in U.S. for over $4k!
Rediculous price, really. For what it is and probably costs to build...
 24. Did you build your home made cab? If so, why not try to build a BFM or fEarful cab. My best DB sound for what we play (not jazz) is through the Mesa Walkabout 12.
 25. I did a quick seach but didn't find this chap. Anyone in the Leeds area needing a good tech, use Fraser Callum. He's worked wonders on my bass and a friends guitar. Very cool guy. Website: http://www.fcstrings.com/ Tel: 07923 656454 I believe he's also down at the Leeds PMT on the weekend but I gave him my business directly.
