Tried to insert a pic... anyway the Bausch doesn't have even vaguely parallel edges on the wings of the bridge, more like a point on the upper surface. At the moment I have a very innovative solution with an expanding bolt holding the pickup paddles against the inside of the bridge legs - aren't engineering friends great :-) Long term I think I will look at a new bridge, the Bausch is fairly low end (no pun intended) after all... ficelles
If you like your bridge you can either get something like a Realist or Aptflex or, have it modified for a Fishman Full circle. Here's a fairly comprehensive list and guide to DB pickups. http://www.doublebassguide.com/?page_id=21 I've tried a BP100, K&K BassMax, Upton Rev II and the Full Cirlce. The K&K and Rev are wing slots so maybe not best for your bridge. I didn't like a BP100 on my bass and now use the FC. The Rev II had the best tone but was fiddly to get in the right place. The FC is the next best thing for my bass. All basses are different so you may have to take a leap of failth. The FC seems to be the most consistant across all basses.
thanks guys, im expecting to have to put some money into it as i want it to be right, am considering having an adjustable bridge fitted and a Fishman full circle installed as it needs a new bridge anyway, i have heard that Jan doesnt go looking for things to have done that dont need doing and is really great at what he does so am waiting in anticipation , i have an appointment to see him on monday morning, anyone had this kind of bass and found strings/pickup that work well with it? cheers, Jez
+1 to Jan. He's ace. I've been really happy with the Full Circle, very full and even sounding. You've seen my bass Jez, not the greatest thing in the world but the FC makes it sound fine. Jan's done all the work on it.
In my sound engineering days I reckon doing that to a bass would have got me hung, drawn and quartered... not to say fired. You would generally only "dump" frequencies that are a specific problem in the room you are in. Mind you I wish I could have dumped 82.5 Hz at my gig tonight, every time I hit E2 I thought the place was about to take off... ficelles
Hi, we've found you can't mix a double bass like an electric bass, it just doesn't work in most cases. If we take out the low frequencies from 100-180hz and below, there is still loads of bottom end but is so much more manageable. In theory you are getting rid of fundamentals but in practice you are actually making it sound tighter and with much less chance for feedback, IME.
Whilst that's technically true it isn't always practically applicable to keep in those low frequencies. Setting a HPF even as high as 100Hz can be great for using an upright live
++1 We usually ask the sound man to dump anything below 100-180 Hz to get a workable tone yet still retain good lowend.
As for best pickup - I'm getting the best tone, and most useable live, with an APTflex Electret pickup going into a Boss TU-2 tuner as a buffer and then into a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0/10T.
I'd love to try one of those pickups. Whilst I love the sound of the Fishman FC, it aint as portable as the APT or a Bmax.

That's a real shame John. Sorry it didn't work out.
Not sure what you're asking with the "forearm contour" - anybody else?
Many thanks for the info. Forearm contour is where your right arm would rest on the body. Slab bodies don't tend to have a contour, most P basses and jazz basses do. I seem to need a contour for my right arm otherwise playing gets uncomfortable.

Nice one John. I've been in touch with Alan a couple of times about his carbon fibre portable double bass. He's just so far away that I haven't been able to get there to try them out. He creates some really cool and useful instruments, and yours in no exception. Enjoy

Again, I know nothing about that BB but I used a BB1600 for ages. Wish I still had it really. Played and sounded great, never let me down.

+1 to both comments. Stage volume needs to be right so we don't over play. It's awful when you start feeling that fatigue set in during a gig or session. I also find it hard in all acoustic environments and really need to concentrate on playing loud enough to be heard but not too hard so the bass chokes. I've been finding different right hand techniques to "draw" (for lack of a better word) sound out of the bass in acoustic sessions, kind of a zen approach I guess, that give max volume and tone with less effort. Makes you wonder how the Browns, Mingus', Carter played all those long gigs for all those years.
Yeah I can understand that, BG is definitely more suited to things that need that stronger simpler sound e.g. funk. Saying that, I think most bands I join from now on will be on the DB (at least that's the plan).
I somewhat agree. Our covers band does all rock and pop tunes with a format of DB, AC guitar and Cajon. You can play any genre on DB, it's learning how to make it sound good that's tricky.

I love to play both electric and DB. They offer different musical gratification and I can't do without either.

+1 to Bill's plans. Look at the Fearful on Talkbass as well.
... I'll let the proper players talk about those. John
Don't let John fool you, he's definitely a proper player There are these on ebay as well.

Anyone tried Presto Ultralight Nylonwound strings?
So that will be a 'no' then? Just don't want to fork out a small fortune to find out these are wrong and then (in my usual style) sell at a huge loss!
Ah the string game...a bottomless pit -
I think I have a spare pair John. What size/thread do you need? There are two sizes but I believe mine are 1/4 20.
