1. If I had to do it, I'd use my little 8 track mixer. It happens to have bucketloads of gain, and is great for level matching. I'd then feed it into a head or power amp. No switches as such, I'd just switch the channel off on the mixer whilst using the other instrument. I'd use its DI out to feed the house, as that's nice and clean.
2.
If the force was the same on each string and the neck thinner on one side than the other, then it should twist slightly unless the neck was strengthened especially to compensate for it (e.g. by moving the truss rod slightly towards the thinner end, or using a dual truss rod). But perhaps it's just by such a small amount it's inperceptible to the naked eye.
The use of graphite or even metal rods to stabilise the neck is another option. And,as you say, it probably isn't a massive degree of asymmetry.
3.
I'm pretty sure you could just flip the bridge and file the nut on the stagg? The forearm rest is in the wrong place and only for thumb position anyway, the body rest I like and use but its just two threads which two nuts glued into the body would solve no problem, I don't think I have missed anything? As for being like a db then I think the stagg is actually much more like a db than something like an NS which feel much more like a fretless bass on end to me although they are obviously much higher quality instruments.
Pete's right. The NS instruments are more like a halfway-house between a fretless and an upright, but that's why I like mine. It was what I wanted. The NS look like they could be converted. The bridge would easily flip around and is adjustable for height, so that'd be easy. The nut might need replacement, but I reckon that's likely on many instruments. Don't think it could easily be removed and just turned around. Might be worth a try, though. No rests and very little asymmetry to contend with. Only minus is the controls would be on the far side from you on an NS.
4.
I enjoying watching the confused look on all the trendies faces in the audience when At The Drive In performed on later a few years ago!
Didn't see that. Must've been good/funny, though. And... Bring back the Old Grey Whistle Test. Some of the stuff on there was awesome. OK, no audience, but that didn't seem to matter. Saw some Roxy Music on the repeats recently. A song I don't even like, but the sheer intensity and accuracy of the performance was superb. (Do the strand, BTW!)
5. My Warwick Steamer LX 6 might be in the running. It's around 15-16 lbs!
6. Sorry I've been a little slow in responding. I've been thinking about it.. How about... Concentric magnetic volume/pan Concentric bass/treble Concentric mid/mid frequency sweep Piezo volume. 7 controls in 4 holes. No drilling required, and as versatile a set-up as I can conceive. It allows you to totally exclude the EMGs and just run the piezo, too. Possible catches? Does the piezo currently run through the pre-amp controls? A buffer circuit may be needed because of high impedance. Certainly not a job which is beyond a good luthier or competent tech. There may even be someone on here local to you that could help or even do it. Add for systems, check out EMG, Bartolini, East, and Audere for starters, depending upon what's already in the instrument. Cost (and it's a liberal guess) about £350 fitted. Maximum. You might get in much cheaper, but I reckon it'll be about £200 in parts and a couple of hours' labour. Hope that provides a starting point.
7.
I don't see why it has to be so divided? Function band gig with a professional set up and performance then you get paid, originals band in the back room at the pub getting your creative juices flowing the next night you don't.I don't get paid for jamming at home.
Time. I can't even commit to one band, let alone two. I spend SO much time with people at work that I just can't take any more. I play at home to help to shut that out. When I've been in bands, I haven't found it to be particularly pleasurable business. Too many egos. In the other hand, creating new music is great. And delivering a good performance- live, in a studio or in rehearsal is great, too. When you add a financial aspect to it, especially if some members are dependent upon the income, it becomes a nightmare. Enjoyment, then. Except I don't enjoy it.
8.
You can't do room acoustic correction on an amp, because most room problems are time domain related (nodes and reflections) and trying to apply a frequency domain solution (EQ) doesn't give consistent results - improving things in one area of the room usually makes it much worse somewhere else.
I agree, but was suggesting it in the context of onstage monitoring use rather than using it as something the audience would hear directly. In that sense, I was considering the player rather than the audience. Needless to say, any DI feed would be "clean", and if correction were applied, make mic'ing the cab extremely problematic...
9.
I have an irrational like of deep tread on car tyres. No idea why.
Aquaplanaphobia? Nothing irrational about that!
10. Real "progress" will continue to come from amplification and cabinets, on board eq, and perhaps pickups. Something like real-time analysis of room modes/reverb by your amp, which then corrects them by applying the relevant eq to give you your desired response. Some good work has come from the folks who produce Q tuner pickups and Lightwave systems. One day, we won't have amps, cabs and PA. It'll either be vibrating force fields to generate the sound or we'll directly transmit it to our audience's brain, missing out ears entirely. © both of those ideas, BTW!
11. Underrated bargains.
12. Ned Steinberger. Furniture designer IIRC. Obviously with a taste for minimalism, but that transferred well into bass design. The NS uprights are well designed, and the new Radius series look good too. Didn't he also design the Spector body shape- also used by Warwick in the form of the Streamer?
13.
What has 5 strings got to do with it?
This- whilst I'm aware that 5 string DBs exist in both BEADG and EADGC tuning, I'm sure I've never actually seen one. Whereas EUBs in a 5 String format are more commonplace. So my point is: availability. I wanted a 5, and one that met all the other stipulations. For me, in my circumstances, an EUB was a no-brainer.
14. Sorry. Neglected two points. My EUB is a 5 A DB won't fit in my car. At all. Ever. Unless you take a saw to it.
15.
The used Stagg for £200 on here is a bargain! The Stagg is really portable and every time without fail that I have plugged it in it has sounded great even at gigs where my Stingray sounded poor for whatever reason, the other thing to concider is that you will buy a DB not long after, try and find a member here who hasn't!
I won't. EUB all the way. Why? Silent practice Portability No feedback I can use fx with it Can jam along using a Pandora & MP3 player Game over for DB for what I use it for. Unlikely ever to play Arco, so that's not an issue.
16. My nearest bass playing neighbour woke me at 0258h this morning. Gonna be hard playing anything with yer head in a sling you *%£#*+- £#%&. That is all.
17. Wife watches it. I use the time constructively, and get some practice in...
18. Everything I own needs to be tuned when I pick it up. The EUB, the Vigier, Status, Warwicks, everything. Never out by much, but I always tune up before I play. Even if it's just to remind the machine heads what they're there for..
19.
Every time I've played in a band with more than one guitarist, they have been excellent at arranging the guitars so that they complimented each other in both note choices and sounds. Those are the sorts of musicians that you want.
Me, too. Then I pile in... The best band I've been in had 2 guitars. They'd alternate, handing the melody back and forth while the other played rhythm or harmonised. Or in some cases, simply shut up! No solos. No egos. It was great.
20. I thought the general opinion to be CV > VMJ > Affinity. I have a VMJ. Currently has a Badass II and Black Schaller knobs. I'd regard the electrics as the weak point. The woodwork and construction matches or betters my MIA Jazz.
21. Not really much difference. A strap is a strap is a strap. You purchase one of the desired length and width. Straplocks are optional, and have washers supplied to prevent them pulling through the holes in the strap..
22. And still no Tony Butler. And have I missed Geezer?
23.
... Why do bass players feel that they have to prepare for alien invasion and the likelihood of a tsunamis when no-one else does?
Bass players feel that they have to prepare for alien invasion and the likelihood of a Tsunami precisely because no-one else (least of all in the band!) does!
24. It varies dramatically. From customer to customer within the same establishment. Everyone has off-days and good days. In the late 90's, the old Wapping Bass Centre was where it was at for gear, environment and service. Nick,Grant,Alex and Chris were awesome. But, like all good things, it had to end. Some incarnations of the Bass Merchant were good. Then it just evaporated. After my first (and last) visit to the Gallery, I'll never spend a penny with them, even if they have the last strings on Earth. I'm unlikely to just be passing Bass Direct, so I'll never know. It's just too far. PMT vary, but staff members in my two nearest stores know me by sight and trend to be pretty OK. Oh, and Strings Direct have always been great.
25. As we've long since covered almost everyone I'd have put on the list, can we have a thread to remove all the ones we don't like?
