I was going to disagree about them being ugly and then I noticed that they've just stuck jazz bass pickups in surrounds to mimic the proper pups. That's just wrong.
  2. I think I know the pub you're talking about, since the description fits. That rig does sound awesome. Everyone sounds awesome through it, though I've got to admit I've never seen anyone attempting a Mark King style slap fest using it. They go for very little money, so if the size and weight isn't an issue (and it is for me) just buy one.
  3.
Theoretically, if two identical sound waves are perfectly in phase then the amplitude of the wave doubles and hence the volume is doubled, so two 100w amps should feasibly produce double the volume of one. However if the waves are perfectly out of phase then the waves cancel each other out, total amplitude is always zero, resulting in silence. In reality, wave physics don't really work as they do on paper!
The power of the waves double, but your ears work logarithmically so you don't perceive that as twice the volume. I don't think anybody's mentioned that the number of speakers has doubled in the OP's scenario, just to muddy the water and add to the confusion.

It's a Mosrite copy. I've always liked the look of them myself, probably because Johnny Ramone favoured the 6 string versions.

  6. Cafe Oto in Dalston specialises in experimental/new music (that's as in new music, not new bands), and both Birthday and the Shacklewell Arms in the same area do gigs that are compatible with post rock. With the exception of Cafe Oto, it's more about promoters rather than venues in London.
  7. So it's just me that thinks it's a bit busy for the song? Great bassline and great song, I just don't think they belong together.
  8.
I've never seen XLRs used for speaker connections before (except for powered cabs) - is this just a Trace thing? I thought it was bad enough for DMX lighting to use XLRs, never mind speaker cabs as well - one type of connector, three totally different cable requirements. A recipe for confusion or what?
Not so much a Trace thing as a late 80s/early nineties thing. Laney (and most likely other manufacturers) were using XLRs as well, and they were pretty common for PA's at the time. Used for the same main reason as Speakons nowadays - you can't accidentally use a guitar lead. I suppose the fact that you might have been able to use a mic lead is why the Speakon took off!
  9.
A speaker has an efficiency and this is defined as how much sound, or how loud, a speaker will go given an input of 1 watt at a distance of 1 meter. A figure of 98db means that with 1 watt input that speaker will have an efficiency of 98db. An increase of 3db is a doubling of output so a 101db speaker will be twice as loud as a 98db speaker. As the 101db efficiency speaker is twice as efficient as the 98db speaker it will only require half the amplifier power to get the same volume hence, 120db with a 98db/w speaker at 1 meter you suggest 200w, but if that goes through a 95db/w speaker then it needs a 400w head, or only 100w with a 102db/w speaker. There is a lot more to it than that of course, but that is the basic principle. I hope that explains it for you.
Although what you're saying is right, the reason you've given (which I've put in bold) is misleading. 3db is the increase in volume you'll get when you double the power, but it's not twice the volume - you'll need a 10db increase for that. So while a cab which is 3db more efficient will achieve the same volume with half the power, the actual increase in volume is pretty insignificant.
  10. Adblock plus Ghostery to stop yourself being tracked from site to site. The various options available means you could also increase your chances of getting ads for the opportunity of meeting slags if you really want. Incidentally, are the ads on this site still pay-per-click? I'll disable Adblock on here if it's pay-per-view.
  11. I think Luke has hit the nail right on the head. All that brass and the through neck probably dates the El Maya to the late 70s/early 80s, and it's almost certainly post 'lawsuit'. The fact that it won't pass as a real Fender from a bit of a distance means there will be less takers for it, even though the quality may well surpass lesser but more accurate P basses.
  12.
The speaker's wattage is how much heat it can deal with. Was you playing at the time & how long at what sort of volume? There's every chance the Ampeg cab wasn't getting 300 watts if you wasn't playing at a pretty high volume. I suppose it's a good way to get rid of the weak cab. Onwards & upwards
I was wondering about this as well - with the two cabs on the go it should have been making an awful lot of noise for what I'm guessing was a domestic situation. You didn't turn on the amp or plug in the cabs with the volume cranked did you?
  13. Ahhh, forgot all about this. Still couldn't get anything to play on your link, but the problem seems to be that it's a link to the mobile site. Try this one http://soundcloud.com/tsunami42 I'll take a listen later as I'm just off out now...
  14.
I've got a friend who lives in Glasgow if anybody wants this checked out...shouldn't Paypal protect you if it is a scam??
Given that he's definitely scamming the other item I don't think it'd be wise to risk your money on the chance that Paypal would refund you.
  15.
But Thomann are essentially a box shifter, so there should be no reason for the packaging to have been opened and the bass handled for anything other than a QC inspection. They don't have to have stock on display like a shop. I would expect anything I bought from them to be in brand-new perfect and unmarked condition unless it was explicitly stated otherwise and carried an appropriate discount.
That was the underlying point of my post, and the assumption that as a box shifter Thomann didn't actually do any QC. Personally I'd prefer to have fingerprints on something and know that it's had some basic checks, rather than a pristine but sub par item.
  16.
I have a gig tonight where the audience consists solely of The Krankies. Should I align my 2x10 vertically of horizontally?
Biggest laugh of the thread (and indeed my whole day)! Thanks for that.
  17. Now there's something you don't see very often. As in I've never seen one before! Shame it's collection only in Berlin. And it's 750...
  18.
Are you saying that's changed?
But this was vintage cr@p.
  19.
That JHS sounds amazing
It does indeed. The thing is, they all sound great on the promo videos on youtube. It's the whole point of them really.
  20.
I'll get me hacksaw out tomorrow!
Weirdly enough I know someone who did that to an Orange 4x12, back when they were considered undesirable old cr@p!
  21. Don't like the sound of the 'high tech' cabs you've heard? Love the sound of your 410s? Really need better dispersion*? Try some thing like these: Or just stack two of those smaller ones. Vertically of course. * As if
  22. The Boss Bass Overdrive has it's fans, but I'm not really one of them. The tone controls are pretty flexible and it's great for aggressive sounds, but it doesn't do what it says on the tin - ie overdrive. To my ears it sounds more like a mild distortion even at it's lowest settings, with an annoying fizz that is always present. But you may love it, many do. If you're looking for something really cheap the Behringer BDI21 is very good (it's a Sansamp clone), but again it doesn't do fuzz. At it's higher settings it's like a cranked valve amp. These can be had used for under £20, and new isn't that much more. It might be worth picking one up s/h and if you don't like it you can sell easily enough for the same kind of money. Though it can be worth hanging on to just for it's DI capabilities.
  23.
The band has been through a number of changes.... They lost their last bassist who left for another band, and they had to fire the last rhythm guitarist.... They are eager to get on the road..... But I am going to chat with the other members and get their view. One interesting thing was we didn't do our original tracks.... I don't think our singer "trusts" this guitarist with them. I'm hoping sense will prevail and he will be ditched by next week.
I can understand wanting to get things moving... but presumably they want your band to get on the road, rather than the rhythm guitarist's backing band. I really can't believe that deep down they don't harbour the same misgivings as you.
  24. I think at this point I'd be wondering why the rest of the band would even entertain the idea of this guy. He's barely got his foot in the door and he's trying to dictate to the band. Guitarists are ten-a-penny - just find another without his head wedged so firmly up his a*se.
  25. A mate once bodged a P bass neck on to a metal dustbin. It looked a damn sight cooler and didn't cost $2500.
