1.
I wouldn't go higher than £400 on this. No pups, the seller hasn't a clue what it is or what state it's in. Lot of unknowns here. £400 would be a good buy.
You could well be right, I'm just guessing based on the a cost of maybe £100 for a decent set of pickups and pots. It looks fairly tidy but the changes would destroy the value for a collector. We'll just have to wait 5 days to see.
2. He's at it again! At least there are no pictures of him this time.
3. I think a lot of people twigged that it's a JV - just seeing the tort plate on it got me thinking it was a JV, and judging by the questions a lot of others were thinking the same thing. And since he's added the serial number it'll show up on saved searches of the text. So probably not quite the bargain it might have been. It'll be very interesting to see what it eventually goes for. £650? Maybe more, as people can get a bit silly and mentally take possession of hidden 'bargains' like this.
4.
The strings look to be aligned off to the G side slightly. This is a problem with a through-neck instrument. For £1100 I would look elsewhere. The whole thing is actually shady. Carefully rebuilt or not it could be a cut 'n' shut, a tarted up faker or anything else.
Ricks with misaligned strings are quite common, and the reason why you see so many with a second groove cut in the saddles. No idea if current models can still exhibit this problem, but I certainly saw new basses in shop windows with this problem in the mid 2000's.
5. Link to the thread with the scans. Looks very much like the one in the ad, bar the logo and string tree.
6. Looks to me like one of those limited edition Encores with the gold hardware. I posted some scans of a review a while back.
7. Sorry, I got the impession you were looking for JJ's sound. A lot of effects lose some of the bottom end, including some (but not all) versions of the Big Muff. As that's not really an issue for you the standard Big Muff will do the job nicely.
8. There are stacks of fuzz boxes out there that will do the job, especially as you don't sound like you'll need one that will leave the bass intact. An EHX Big Muff is easily picked up cheaply and will do the job, though I wouldn't say that fuzz is necessarilly what you want if you're looking to nail JJ's sound.
9.
Not interested in subscribing to the Guardian on Facebook.
You can use the link to go directly to the article on their website Kiwi. Just like I'm about to.
10.
Now that's what I don't understand, what makes a '72 worth 3 grand?
Same thing that can make a '58 Les Paul worth £100,000+ - someone's prepared to pay that much.
11. Welcome to the forum! There's been a lot of discussion as to whether Rocksmith might make a good practice tool. It seems to have worked in getting you back to the real thing at any rate. Scored yourself a bargain with the Epi I reckon.
12.
I identified it as that as the serial number is on the neckplate. I'll upload a photo of it tonight once I'm home from work. I didn't know I was the main source on the net on this bass. Kinda cool
Very cool! It must make you the resident expert on all things Kay now.
13. The posts by DomJohnson are the links I'd found when googling 'KJB-1B', as well as various posts by Tommo. The thing is, Domjohnson doesn't seem to be completely certain what it is judging by the comment in his sig. So I'm slightly circumspect at the moment and that's why I was asking Tommo how he'd arrived at the KJB designation. When there's little information on the web it's quite easy for one person to make a post with information that's they'd misheard or misremember, and it's then repeated by everyone else who come across the posting.
14. Glad you chipped in. How did you ID your bass as a KJB-1B? The only references to that model on the net all seem to be from you, which is why I was a bit dubious. Later Kays aren't that well documented, probably because they were a cheap brand, and the catalogues that are online don't contain the bass you and the OP have.
15.
Going out on a limb and tentatively identifying it as Kay KJB 2B.1970'S.
Yeah, it's clearly a Kay because the picture in the post I linked to has the logo still on the scratchplate. But the model designation is a bit dubious. The only references to it on the web come from the same poster and the only vaguely similar model number in Kay catalogues refer to banjos.
16. I'd hazard a Kay just going by the hardware, though doubtless other brands were using identical stuff. Edi: Try this post - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/133501-kay-k-2b/page__view__findpost__p__1211883 I'm not sure that the model number is correct though. I'm not sure why, it just looks wrong!
17. It could be a supply problem (old, rural pub) or it could be a problem with their own electrics (in which case the place would be a fire hazard), but in both those scenarios I'd expect it to affect the whole band as well as the lighting (which would be very noticeable to everyone in the pub). So it's more likely to be the amp. I couldn't begin to guess all the possible causes but have experienced a similar problem with a dirty input socket. It would help if you could try to replicate the problem at home/rehearsal.
18.
Problem is with the vast majority of these weekend promoters is that such a promise is worth about as much in writing as it would be whispered into the ear of a fleeting unicorn.
Weekend promoter seems about right. Enthusiastic amateur with little experience. http://www.pdhpromotionevents.com/about-us/
19. It's not really a case of whether Hotrox are to be trusted, more a case of whether the internet connection to their website can be trusted to be secure. Phone them to place an order if you have any concerns.
20. Oh dear. Someone has made the mistake of thinking that because one dreamer wants an absurd figure to part with his bass, then offering his own for 10% less constitutes a bargain. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1960s-ROSETTI-BASS-9-VINYL-COVERING-ALL-ORIGINAL-SAME-AS-EGMOND-2BV-GREAT-NICK-/300789040594
21.
The Marshall 4x12s from the late sixties didn't produce any true bottom.
Very true. That chart is from a 70's Marshall guitar cab, but probably not so different to a 60's bass cab - and I'm not even sure Marshall were producing dedicated bass 4x12's in the sixties. You could EQ some more bass into that, but not expect it to get very loud.
22. Ampeg classic and what looks like an SVT 4 at the bottom. And going by this article I'd imagine the pedals are a Boss Tu-2/3, boss chorus and a Bass Drive. Oh, and the Major guitar amp. If he's posted on a forum or facebook why not ask him.
23.
I wouldn't want to be in a band with anyone who uses there where they should be using their. P
Or in a band that corrects 'you' to you're instead of your.
24. I just did a search to check that my memory wasn't totally playing up on me. It seems like it could be a problem with other pedals as well, not just Dave's. Linky.
25.
I've ended up using a flat screen monitor PSU for my DHA valve pedal and it's whisper quiet - just goes to show what a clean DC supply can do for you.
I know there's a known issue with switch mode supplies and Dave's pedals, in that they need to be plugged in to the effect before the power supply is switched on (IIRC). I'm not sure if that is a quirk of DHA's designs or whether it applies to other pedals as well. I seem to remember Dave saying it was a high pitched whistle, and could be cured by taking the above mentioned steps. I always use an old style transformer with my VT bass, so it's not a problem I've actually had to deal with.
