So how could you confirm that it is a '79 then?
Like Jazzman says, by the codes on pots and neck. But Fender also started messing with the Jazz Bass around this time. Rosewood boards went back to the slab neck in 1980, 4 bolt necks reappeared in '81 and dots came back in '82. By '83 they were using the one piece pickguard. It was the comment about the dots that had me thinking in was an S9 serial rather than a '79.

I don't pay that much attention to jazzes, but I think they go for about £1200 give or take a bit depending on condition. Do check it's actually a 79 though. S9 serials were used intil 82.

I can't give any advice about the fault other than to suggest that it sounds like something is shorting out. However replacing a fuse with a 'non-blow type' is probably a really, really bad idea. The reason the fuse is there is so that a cheap and easily replaceable component will blow, rather than the entire amp going up in a puff of smoke. Worst case scenario: the chassis is live and you're risking frying yourself.

Is £60 for VFM for an empty Hiwatt 410 CabVFM?
Musky replied to steven gayle's topic in General Discussion
In a word... no. You can pickup a loaded Peavey 410 for not that much more. Now if it was a vintage 4x12... -
Like Chris says, EQ is likely to be the problem. Lot's of boost to the low end plus plenty of volume is likely to see the speakers reaching their mechanical limit way before they reach their maximum wattage. Do you get the same problem even at bedroom volumes?

Newbie question, what pickups for a jazz bass copy??
Musky replied to blue meenie's topic in Introductions
Welcome to the forum. If it were me, quite honestly I wouldn't throw a lot of money at the Crafter. It seems you're not entirely taken with your bass and would really like something a bit better, so why not use the money you'd put towards the upgrades and save up for another bass? The upgrades you're considering would take you a long way towards something like a Squier VM or CV Jazz. Having said that, I remember that Out To Play Jazz on here used to rate the Crafter Cruiser basses and bought several for his students. An alternative might be to fit some good but cheaper pickups like Kent Armstrong. I'm sure others will have suggestions for other decent pickups at good prices. -
Barefaced Super 15 vs. Vintage, how much loud do you need for Doom?
Musky replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Amps and Cabs
Reckon comparing them in the evening, between houses with kids, would be really unpopular. The ports are plugged because Vintage comes with a pair of those plugs, so hey are both fitted for delivery. It drops the tuning to be more akin to a sealed cab in the lows. Plan is kind of that the Vintage covers the guitary side, so that roll off is beneficial, means no more brutally heavy 4x12 for my mids and up, see how it works out. They are plugged in for a go tomorrow.
I can well imagine you wouldn't make too many friends trying those out at home! Looking forward to hearing how they pan out once you've had them a while though. -
Barefaced Super 15 vs. Vintage, how much loud do you need for Doom?
Musky replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Amps and Cabs
So how does the vintage compare to the Super 15? And how does the sponge in the ports affect the tone? -
well I'm pretty sure the body isn't - the routing/construction/body wood suggests not - may just be normal squier. the neck may or may not be - a 1994 japanese squier at least- maybe not silver series.
Silver Series necks are quite easy to ID - they've got a really tight radius to the corner by the E string.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Musky replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Very nice example of a Cardinal Series going in the next few hours http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2c69042d02
Wow, that went for £225! Pricey for a Cardinal. -
So a Rockinbetter isn't a Rickenbacker & a Rockinbetter isn't a Tokai?
Musky replied to iconic's topic in Bass Guitars
Ha ha, I was thinking that. How do the manufacturers of the Rockinbetters avoid the legal grief that threatens nearly all manufacturers, sellers or even owners of basses that look like that, especially given that the brand name is so clearly designed to reinforce the link?
At a guess, I'd imagine it's as hard for the IP holders to find the origin of the Rockinbetters as it is for us. Sure, they can compel companies to reveal their suppliers but that costs money. It's far easier to go after the small time importers who are essentially one man operations and threaten them with legal action they could ill afford to even get to the preliminary stages. The same goes for forums. Ebay/Gumtree just roll over on any Vero request, so again it's something easy to initiate. Still, they've had a trademark on their headstock for a year now, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they go after companies that can afford to get lawyers to write back and wouldn't be surprised if there had already been some communication. I'm not really up on these things, but does anyone know if they've actually initiated legal proceedings against another company? I know the Hipshot dispute was (is) quite long running, but I don't think that even then any papers were served. -
I have the best of both worlds I guess.
You're not kidding. Sports car and Range Rover.

Amp and speaker config advice needed
Musky replied to Stephen Houghton's topic in Repairs and Technical
The wattage will be splt equally between the two cabs if they're both 8 ohms, so theoretically you could overpower the first cab by 10 watts. In practice it's unlikely to be a problem, not least because you'll likely hear the speakers complaining before it reaches it's rated wattage. A bigger problem would be caused if either (or both) the cabs were rated at less than 8 ohms. I'd definately confirm the impedance before using both the cabs together. -
'Tune' Japanese basses, anybody know much about them?
Musky replied to Richeyrockshack's topic in Bass Guitars
Anything like this? The Tune Bass Maniac was something of a classic instrument and spawned a whole host of copies and instruments taking their cue from it's design in the late 80's/early 90's. They were high quality instruments but they nor the their copies seem to be particularly fashionable right now. AFAIR there was some kind of internal dispute and two companies ended up making instruments under the Tune brand name. I've no idea what the quality is like of the newer instruments, or indeed if other companies have used the same name, but if it's made in Japan it's likely to be worth your while getting it into a usable condition. Edit: I've just realised you've said you could only find one page that had a bass that looked like yours, which I guess means it's unlikely that yyou'rs is the Bass Maniac! -
Yeah, if you do a search in the Bass Guitars forum you'll find a post where Bassassin (BC's resident 'faker expert) spills all he knows on the Shaftesbury copies. Unfortunately AFAIR that wasn't very much - no confirmed factory or reliable dating from the serials as I recall. Edit: Found it - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/64691-shaftesbury-bass-second-try

Refinishing a jazz neck with low friction: what to use?
Musky replied to Ashwood1985's topic in Repairs and Technical
As for your Fender neck, I have used 800 grade wet and dry to take the gloss off. It's easy to restore the gloss later if you want to. Do NOT sand down to the bare wood. I hear Brillo pads work too but never bothered trying.
+1 -
The Redsub from gear4music looks good discussed elsewhere on the forum. £335 new loud and tiny!
Or the Harley Benton version. Edit: Scrub that. I've just checked Thomann and it seems it's no longer stocked.

I don't think this was ever going to be a bargain - way too many people out there could spot it for what it is.

And what's your budget?

Fender Precision bass.. help if is fake or not 1976 or 1962
Musky replied to helikacarvalho's topic in Bass Guitars
I saw the original ad, as did many others here, and it wasn't a Fender in any shape or form. If you contact Gumtree they should still have a copy of the original text and pictures which will help you in any claim. -
It's not a shop, it's the manufacturer's own website. I'd lay money that the NYC phone number is redirected to China, even if it rings at all. This stuff is all over TrandTang and similar sites. Anyone buying would do well to remember to factor in about 25% in taxes and duties, and keep their fingers crossed that customs allow it into the country.
