1. I've been looking at this post and all the very valid arguments about 'Why we gig'. Is it for love; Is it for money; is it for the love of money? I must admit that after going through the stress of rehersals; getting to the gig; making sure youv'e got everything and that you get a good sound - getting a little change' can reallly make you feel good inside and valued...but I'd do it all anyway for nothing ..oops I meant to say as long as I'm not out of pocket. Lets face, gigging is a naturally progression for us bassie's. I can play by myself and or jam with a friend but,for me, its only in a band where we find expression. Its only in that environment that we can do our job - to outline and support the chords and provide the rhythm for what everyone else is playing. I'm not a professional musician, so I'm not dependant on getting paid to play. I can well understand the conerns and viewpoints of those people who are and so depend on getting a fair whack and some respect for their efforts; but that different from having a day job and gigging 'on the side'. I'm on the same wavelength as Dr Dave and Low End Bee - music is a passion 'and when it hits, you feel no pain'
2. I think its a bit disrepectful to talk about 'poor bass players' in a supergroup. They do what they do and they are part of the band and the sound. Everyone has a part to play and everyone plays a part!
3. Just started gigging again after about 12 years and have a had a few incidents where I have completely lost it due to nerves. Read up about it and spoke to a few friends and have come to the conclusion that I need to prepare and get rid of the nervous energy. My pre gig routine involves running on the spot; lots of stretches and deep breathing - remember to expel all the air in your lungs prior to deep breathing . Doing some runs on the bass to stretch fingers. Last gig was 21/12; followed my routine and everything was fine
4. Bass players are going to be around as long as there is music. I agree with an earlier post about stuff on the radio being a small percentage of the music that is being produced. There is an great live music scene where I live - indie, rock, jazz, R'nB - and I see no absence of bass guitars.
5. I'm new to the site and really am just a novice but I can't believe a bash can't be organised for Yorkshire. Am willing to talk to anyone interested in trying to make this happen
6. Last Friday went to support some young kids who have just started playing. other members of the band were there and decided to to do an impromtu gig - justa couple or three songs from the set. Well .. I fell apart;sweaty cramped fingers;couldnt hold a note and it was allso embarrasing for me butparticularly formy band mates. I know I suffer from this badly and usually have a routine to help me get through.... streches, deepbreathing , running on the spot to get rid of nervous energy but I was too complacent and didnt do it and my was I sorry. Luckily I have supoortive band mates so it was bad and not too bad. And the moral of that tale...Preparation, Preparation, Preparation. OneLove
7. Been back playing bass with a band since May after about 12 years of doing very little by way of practice or playing with anyone.( My 2 basses were ornaments, only used to tinkle with when I wanted to show off a bit to visitors or annoy my partner) Did a one a few gigs over the summer; got real buzz from the experience and now looking to add to my gear. After being 'off the scene I'm ot sure what stuff costs and wh\at is value for money...... so Is £60 for VFM for an empty Hiwatt bass cabinet in good condition VFM ? PLEASE ADVISE One Love StevieG
8. Hail up Jahfish Any Black Uhuru; D Brown; Exodus LP. so many ....can't think. Mainly old school roots rock 70's 80's & early 90's
9. Saw this great site for bassists and thought I'd sign up to share some thoughts and egt some ideas and expertise about being a better musician and bassist. I play a westone thunder that I've had for 30 years and a 78 Fender P Bass whcih was given to me by a good friend about 12 years ago. The Westone is my favourite bass solid, reliable, no frills but really versatile. I have an 250w HH Bass machine and a Hiwatt cab 2 x 15. The bass machine an awesome peice of kit, old but in great shape. I play in a reggae band and admire Robbie Shakespeare, Aston Barret for their lines. Jaco of course. Looking forward to some good conversations , advice and support from my bass community. One Love StevieG
