1.
Ahaa, well done for spotting that commonly used and gutless tactic so early in your time here! It's a fairly regular occurrence, usually employed by those who have realised they're wrong in what they're arguing but lack the appendages to openly admit it.
Is this really necessary?
2.
Thanks for the advice but sometimes it just happens!
Hitting the 'Ctrl' button instead of Shift in conjunction with 'i' will do that.
3. Mods like this usually devalue Fenders in cash terms, even when they increase the utility of the bass. Go figure.
4. Fender didn't produce any Precisions with Jazz pickups in the 70s - you just got the one bog standard model. Any 70s P with Jazz pup has had one added at a later date, and so it would be up to the person who installed it what the switching arrangements were. Simply adding another volume pot was what most people seem to have opted for, a la the Jazz bass. Assuming the Precision pup is still original, it'll still sound the same as it did when it left the factory when soloed. Edit: Oh, another thing to consider is where the Jazz pickup has been placed, as this will affect the sound from that pickup.
5. He says the graphic isn't working - I bet it's the switch that has packed up. Might not be of course, but a simple fix if it is.
6. I seem to remember this has come up before, with an amp taking out two cabs. AFAIR it is the manufacturer that is liable for damage caused by a fault in their product, and if I remember correctly there was a satisfactory outcome. Edit: Here's the thread.
7.
Snap!
8.
Some sellers will mark it as a gift so you don't need to pay tax.
Marking things as a gift only works for goods up to the value of £36 and if it's sent by a private individual. The limit for charges used to be £18 (it had stayed at the same amount since at least the 90s, in spite of inflation) but has now been reduced to £15. http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&propertyType=document&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000014
9.
Ive just had the same thing i ordered some pickups from only music.com and got hit for £13 something they charge £8 handling fee thats what pisses me off,tax me fair enough but idont have many options left to me regards handling fee and it doesnt make alot of sense i ordered pickup rings from fretsonthenet.com these cost more but i paid no tax or handling fee? I cant work it out.
It's luck of the draw, in that not everything gets picked up. Basically allow for 20% on the initial cost including postage, plus £8-£15 admin charges. If duty comes to more than £9 then that has to be added plus the VAT. Then if you don't get charged it's a bonus. Got to agree that admin charges are a kicker on low value items, although nothing is payable if the goods cost less than £15.
10. Sadly not, unfortunately.
11. Are you sure about that Bill? I'm sure I remember bass drivers in the sidewinder range as well.
12. Ouch! I think he really has used an angle grinder on that...
13. I think so, as long as you keep it simple to start with. Forget the slapping for the moment, stick to the basic arrangement and leave the little fills. Once you've got the basics down you can work on adding the fills. Then you can try the whole thing popping the notes. It might help if you can practice with a computer to slow things down a little. Best Practice is a very handy (and free!) tool for Windows users, that will also come in useful for working stuff out by ear.
14. Robert Fripp pioneered looping well before digital loopers and developed a whole musical philosophy around it. Probably the most tedious thing was him expounding that philosophy at gigs. But then he's not a bassist either.
15.
The license is actually on the side of the musicians - it gives some protection making sure you get paid if it gets covered by someone else and money is collected every time it gets airplay. Can seem like red tape at the time but comes in very handy like when Curtiss Muldoon's Seraphim got reworked as Maddonna's Ray of Light - as the original had been registered they ended up earning a small fortune. If it hadn't been registered they would have had a very hard time proving the track existed.
Exactly this - although the Madonna example would have been covered by PRS. The red tape is there to make it more difficult to pirate or bootleg material, and ensure that if a writers material is used on another recording the appropriate mechanical royalties are paid. Incidentally McNach, if you're new to all this Bemuso.com has a very simple checklist (with some explanation) on DIY releases that has an emphasis on getting the job done without getting bogged down in an avalanche of info.
16. Vox produced quite a few basses with active electronics around 66-67. No idea when the first one was introduced though.
17. Some stands have their problems too! Something to do with the fumes given of by the rubber affecting the finish. Probably exactly the same thing as the case.
18. It's possible that the next delivery is already spoken for, and new orders won't be fulfilled until October. Give them a bell and tell them your concerns. If you don't like what you hear cancel it there and then.
19.
Yes, except that the UK mains voltage is still nominally 240V. When the EU standardised the mains voltage to 230 +/- 10% (as dincz rightly pointed out), it meant that 240V +10% would be outside the EU specification, i.e 262V. But the UK had to implement the EU directive to harmonise mains voltages so it changed the specification to 240V -10% +6%. So, a bit like the metrication of 19-inch racks to 482.6mm. The bottom line, as dincz pointed out, is that any equipment having trouble operating between mainland Europe and UK mains supplies hasn't been designed properly.
Nominal UK voltage has been 230V for quite sometime. Although in practice the voltage we receive at the socket hasn't changed at all.
20. The counterfeit one is "no longer for sale" - it wasn't pulled, the seller has taken it down. Presumably someone tipped him off that it wasn't genuine and he really didn't know. Either that or someone made him an offer.
21. Tab sites are on dodgy legal ground though, and some have been taken down in the past. I'm not sure where chordify would sit legally, though I suspect it might be of equally dubious legality. I tried chordify and it threw up a couple of errors on a fairly simple song, so perhaps the rights holders would be ok with that. With all the tab sites out there I think the cat is out of the bag now anyway.
22. It seems very rum all round. I think it's a bit odd that the guy who bought it apparently jumped in with an offer of almost double what was originally being asked. Perhaps several people offered more than was asked and it was sold off auction style. Either that or the buyer really wanted a black JV.
23. Welcome to the forum! For that sort of money I think I'd be looking at a Westone Thunder. They came in active and passive variants, of which the active are more common. Don't let that put you off though - they're great basses. Ibanez, Yamaha and Peavey basses also get a lot of love around here.
24. If spotted it'll still get pulled. JH claims he has trade dress in the design, which covers general likeness. It's likely any trade dress isn't enforceable in the UK but ebay won't go into the ins and outs of the matter and just take it down. Even stuff which couldn't be mistaken for a real Rick, like the Kays and Shaftesbury semis, get pulled.
25. I could well be wrong but I thought the more recent MIJs had spaghetti logos like yours (except the RIs).
