3 [mass noun] the ability to [s]discern[/s] define what is of good quality or of a high aesthetic standard Oxford online dictionary.
Fixed it for you. The OED's definition rather presupposes that 'a high aesthetic standard' just exists independent of everything else, waiting to be discovered in the wild. I'd say that the aforementioned aesthetic standard is defined by those in a position to promulgate their own particular tastes, and pass that off as 'good taste'. Which, as others have already pointed out, bags the question, 'who is defining what good bass playing actually is?'
  2. Based on the thread title I'm guessing David is looking to end up with something sounding like a B15?
  3.
I'm either thick skinned, laid back or simply missing these contentious threads.
They're easy to spot - they've all got a post count that belies innocuous looking titles.
  4. SS amps will put out a specified wattage into a particular load. In your case that's 275w into 8 ohms. It does this automatically without any switching needed*. It will run happily down to a minimum load , again in this case that's 4 ohms, so you could run two 8 ohm cabs without fear of any damage to your amp. Dropping below the minimum load will likely result in an expensive repair bill. If you imagine the amp as a water tank with the cabs connected via pipes, you can imagine the water flowing out to the speakers. How fast that water runs out depends on how greatly the water is impeded. The cabs impedance is measured in ohms, so with the higher 8 ohm figure you'll get a specific wattage (275w). When you reduce the impedance more 'water' will flow, so you'll get more watts. Why not go to an even lower impedance, say 2 ohms? Because the pipes (wiring) can't handle that kind of current flow - hence why a minimum impedance is stated. So to answer your question, no you won't break the cab. Oh, and the volume difference between 450w and 275w isn't very much at all. It's very much in 'only just noticeable' territory. *Unless you happen to be using an Orange Bass Terror!
  5.
It's bollocks - Fender used to use a couple of factorys to build their basses - the first was Greco I think (but don't quote me on that) and from 1982-97 they used Made in Japan. In 97 I think it swiched to another producer who used "Crafted in Japan" - until 2007,2008 when they start using Made in Japan again - probably another factory. The fender website lists more Made in japan from 2010-2011 from yet another factory for certain models. So thats the reason for the switch... different suppliers. So why do I think it's all bollocks ebay sellers language? Well mainly because you rarely hear of a bad Fender bass - wether MIJ or CIJ and that if there is a difference I suspect it's so minimal that it's both not as big as variation from bass to bass, and not worth worrying about one bit. They will both be decent basses. But.... Some japanese Fender were made to export (like the Geddie Lee model) and some were made for the japanese market. Which is better? Well the best guitars that Fender Japan make are for the japanese market. And also the worst guitars Fender Japan make are for the japanese market.... they make a range of qualities for their market - from cheaper basic models to top of the range vintage reissues and even the japanese version of a custom shop... and of course that's changed over the years too! So in conclusion. The fact that it's MIJ or CIJ, made for export or made for import tells you very little about how good it is or how high up the range it is- just that it was made in japan. Hope that helps!
It was Fuji Gen that made the MIJ's (as a JV owner I thought you'd know that ). They also made some of the Grecos, so maybe that's where the confusion comes from. I think it's Tokai and Dyna that makes the CIJ's, though the first ones appeared in parallel with MIJ's around 92-97 I think. It has been speculated that Fuji Gen had something in their contract that specified they were the makers of 'MIJ' instruments. It's also speculated that the return of 'MIJ' basses means they are making the Japanese stuff now. I'm not entirely sure where these theories came from, but it's on the internet, so must be true. Speaking of 'true' stuff on the internet, the wikipedia Fender Japan page has all this info just so anyone can fill their boots with the latest rumours.
  6.
It seems to be an arbitrary construct that roughly means "you must consider the needs of basschat users before you consider the needs of your own family".
I don't think 'must' comes into this really. As Clarkey and others have pointed out, there's not really a huge amount that can be done if people want to realise a profit. However many people have gone out of their way to assist others on this forum without seeking any remuneration in return, from organising bass bashes to loaning out amps. That's the nature of the community. Personally I shall find it a little sad if all our interactions are reduced to purely financial terms.
  7. It's got a 3 piece neck with the little veneers between them which suggests Matsumoku. Not sure if the DiMarzios are original. Edit: Just spotted the truss rod adjuster - I don't think Mat ever used that type.
  8.
BC has had them from time to time but we do keep an eye out for these and shift their activities into the Affiliates section. With the 1000's of posts we get on here and the fact that all the mods (even me occasionally!) have lives outside of BC, some of these will inevitably slip through the net. So, if anyone thinks they've spotted a trader, report it and we'll check them out.
Good to hear. I was about to say I thought this is exactly what the Affiliates forum was for. If someone is one here to trade then that should be made absolutely clear. AFAIK dealers have to declare themselves when selling secondhand cars (and for all I know other products) and there are laws that apply to dealers that don't to private sellers. If someone whats to deal on these boards they should be posting in the appropriate section.

    Weighing In

    It's a wood myth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_drying#Equilibrium_moisture_content
  10.
Question is though are Beta Aivin any good.
At least some of them seem to cut the mustard. http://www.ovnilab.c...s/glxbeta.shtml Someone posted here a little while ago about the HB bass DI pedal and they were less than impressed. Horses for courses, different strokes and all that, but until we get a few more reviews I'd say the jury's out.
  11. Yep. It's just valve power stages that shouldn't be run without a load.
  12. The DI pedal looks fairly similar to the Harley Benton version. I'd imagine these are sourced from Elder/Beta Aivin just like the Prometean clones are. There's quite a few brands that source their pedals from them, albeit with different enclosures.
  13.
The only problem is that for a 12 it does need a fair size box ideally.
I'm certainly no expert, but doesn't stuffing a speaker into a smaller than ideal box create a hump in the low mids - which seems to be what the OP is looking for?
  14. Indeed he does. Sadly none of them are bass shaped though. Edit: Actually one of them is! Not at £175 though.
  15. 15 minutes on the forum - a wrong turn can be forgiven I reckon. I'm sure one of the mods will move it. Welcome to the forum Mr Plankspanker. Nice looking bass BTW
  16.
I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick here . The point I am making is that if you buy enough secondhand basses - and in the last 30 + years I have bought plenty , so I know a little bit about what I am talking about - it is pretty inevitable that one of them will develop a fault sooner or later . That seems a fairly reasonable thing to suggest . Furthermore , if you buy enough new basses - and I have - then it is highly likely that one of them will " go wrong " in one way or another sooner or later . It is not inevitable that every bass , new or secondhand , will fail , but if you buy enough basses it is almost inevitable that at least one of them will develop a problem . Change of ownership has no material effect on the reliabilty and build quality of a bass , that is self - evident , but significantly , it does subject the new owner to the wear and tear and possible misuse or mistreartment of the bass by the previous owner or owners . All of these factors could be reasons why any bass will fail to work properly .
Ah, I'm with you now. I thought you meant that it's inevitable that every secondhand bass will fail, although on rereading I can see that's not actually what you said. Apologies for my confusion!
  17.
Look , let me put it like this : if you buy secondhand basses , sooner or later something unforseen is going to go wrong with one of them . It's almost inevitable .
Whilst I agree with the rest of your post, this bit is absolute twaddle. You may as well say it's inevitable that something will go wrong with a bass bought new, which isn't the case (other than parts which can be regarded as consumables, such as pots, frets etc.) Change of ownership has no material effect on the reliability and build quality of a bass. Whilst there are risks to buying secondhand, the inevitability of a bass failing shouldn't be one of them.
  18. It's your bass so if that's what you want do what you like to it. You might regret it in purely financial terms in years to come, but if that's not a concern and you'd just like something more to your liking, well - go for it.
  19. A quick google seems to show that disabling the Yontoo extension in chrome will fix the problem. Deleting would probably be a better idea though. Interesting that they appear to have found a way of exploiting Chrome in a way that effects macs though.
  20. I think the nearest we had to an amp FAQ was the buyers guide on the now defunct basschat wiki. http://web.archive.org/web/20110907235419/http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:buying:choosing_your_first_amp A bit of info like your budget and whether transporting your kit is an issue will likely bring up some concrete suggestions for you.
  21. Probably a combination of 'Sid Sings' and '...And Justice For All'.
  22.
you may want to edit your post to type his name correctly
I knew I should have gone back to check the spelling!
  23.
Maybe something to do with it being largely populated by ignorant Americans. (Ignorant Americans are very common, but very important that we distinguish them from the decent Americans, because there are plenty of them too, they probably just have the sense to shout their mouths )
Oddly enough most people who use TB aren't from the US. Typically they are quite young though, compared to us old gits who are more likely to be around the 50 mark (and better educated:) ). That probably also explains our collective GASsing for lightweight cabs! Personally I far prefer it here and think the mods do a great job. That the ban hammer is rarely used is a testament to that. My previous post wasn't intended as a criticism, more of a response to several comments recently that this place seems less supportive - not something I'd noticed myself, and a point that the replies to Evil Undeads thread seems to contradict. Meanwhile, back on topic, I hope that Alcolytes gets the outcome he's looking for.
  24. I can't see the description (I'm guessing there are a large number of pictures, and I'm using my mobile) but S8 serials turned up on early eighties basses so you're most likely right.
  25.
BC has what, 20,000 members? Out of those, you cant expect everyone to play the game. Given that, I think BC has a pretty good community feel all things considered.
All things considered, yes. But as I noted earlier there does appear to have been a shift in opinion on this matter, and in other threads others have commented that the forum seems to be less supportive than before. All inevitable as the forum grows I suppose. I can't help but think of talkbass, where there is a community of long standing members with high post counts. There are also a seemingly endless amount of newer members who like to disparage and deride others over the internet. The mods to their credit do try to keep on top of things, but inevitably this has led to a lot of rules and an outright banning of certain topics. I know this has exercised the minds of the mods on here, but I can't help but wonder if BC will end up going the same route.
