1. You didn't say it had to be new!
 2.
There isn't anyone doing with Rickenbacker style instruments what Sandberg, Nordstrand, Sadowsky etc. are doing with Fender-esque basses, except perhaps John Birch who isn't around anymore. I can understand the rationale behind buying their instruments, as they provide the functional attributes and much of the appearance of the Fenders, but with far more options available and a degree of personalisation that a larger company would struggle to provide. The currently available Ric copies are all cheap knock-offs, but if a small company was to offer a quality bass built like a Rickenbacker except with a sensible bridge, no uncomfortable pickup surround and the option of five strings, I'd be sort of tempted to save up my gig money for one! It'd be even better if Ric themselves offered such a thing, but I can see they have little incentive to.
Ahem...
 3.
It's just like all those people who wear cheap TAG fake watches. They think they look sophisticated, but the Nike trainers, tracksuit and fags give it away. Take some pride in yourselves people. Don't give your wife a fake Cartier watch from down the market. It means that you don't value her. Don't buy yourself a copy bass guitar, it shows that you consider yourself to be of low value. There are plenty of affordable alternatives out there without demeaning yourself. Or ..... you could chose a licenced copy. Then you wouldn't be so seedy.
Oh please!
 4. I was going to suggest about £250. I've half considered buying one of these in the past because they sell for so little considering the quality. I really don't need another bass though!
 5.
Necessity is the mother of invention. And so is Frank Zappa, to a certain extent.
6. I think it's one of the Bass Collection models - the more expensive one had chequered binding like that.
 7. I notice the forum software has done its usual trick of changing the file extension. Anyone downloading this will have to change the extension back again, presumably to pdf.
 8. Another one here.
 9. Yeah, there's been a lot of this recently. They always include an email address and tell you to contact them off Ebay.
 10. There have been a lot of threads covering this. A good place to start might be http://basschat.co.u...er-isnt-a-tokai or search the rickenfaker thread for Rockinbetter (there were some suggestions on how to list an ad recently, though you might be on the radar now). The long and short of it is that Ebay will pull an auction as soon as they receive a vero report - they have no interest in getting involved in any disputes.
Put it back on with a disclaimer stating there are no infringes of IP as it doesn't show the headstock
I know RIC claim they have trade dress recognised in their designs, but I've no idea which jurisdiction the court covered (presumably the US) or if that ruling has international implications. But in any case Ebay don't want to get involved for the sake of a few quid in sale fees.
 11.
How does that work?
Doubling the number of speakers (like for like) will give a 3dB increase in volume. Likewise, doubling the power will also give a 3dB increase. So with an amplifier producing 300w into a 4 ohm load, the single 4 ohm cab will receive the full 300w. With two cabs giving a combined load of 8 ohms the same amp will typically produce about 200w (theoretically amps double their output power when you halve the impedance, but in reality that never happens), so that's a decrease in volume of about 1.7dB - BUT... using twice the number of speakers gives a 3dB increase in volume, so you're left with an overall increase of 1.3dB. Unfortunately 1.3dB is absolutely negligible, so overall you're left with about the same volume.
 12. One 210 running at 4 ohms will give you about the same volume as two 210's at 8 ohms combined.
 13.
Have Fender ever made any basses with though- or set-necks?
Can't think of any Fender branded ones, but FMIC's Heartfield brand had through necks. Not sure that really counts as Fender though.
 14.
You cannot listen to these things in isolation and conclude that the playing is sloppy, that absolutely isn't the way a a record is made or is meant to be judged. Someone posted up a John Deacon bass line in isolation a month or two back saying the same. The fact is that the bass take is reliant on an entire ensemble recording, not itself, a bass part is rarely a self-contained thing. So the idiosyncrasies of the band are what make a record or live recording, not individual parts. I think people regularly misconstrue what it actually takes to record a great track, it's rarely about perfection, it's about the sum of the parts working together towards the best possible sounding track. The mistakes in dynamics and timing are simply the human part of the performing and recording process, the idea that we are by our nature imperfect and it should be accepted as such. The isolated parts of a recording are not for consumption because they aren't reflecting the fact that when you play with more than just yourself in your bedroom rehearsing you will have to adapt to the limitations of your environment, whether these limitations be technological or human. Once you accept this it's far easier to enjoy recorded music for what it is, which is totally honest musicianship.
Very good post. Something to bear in mind is that we don't actually seem to like perfection very much. We've had that option for some time with the use of drum machines, and it wasn't long before someone had to come up with a 'humanise' function.
 15.
Unfortunately, it was being abused so it was taken down. A new shiny replacement is being looked into, so hang on in there.
Since it was so long, wouldn't it be better to remove the offending posts and lock the thread so it can remain as an archive? Yours, A concerned Righty.
 16.
The one on the right looks like a Kelly 50w valve head. Similar to a Selmer T & B 50.
Weirdly enough I was thinking the same thing.
 17.
Alex's BGM column for reading reference too. http://barefacedbass.com/uploads/BGM67%20Jun2011.pdf
Not to mention all the often lengthy threads that have covered this subject on this forum.
 18.
I don't care!!! I want presets!!! I want I want I want!!!
I didn't think you could get analogue gear with presets (other than ones with motorised controls), but it seems I'm wrong. The new Blonde Deluxe from Tech21 has digital recall on an otherwise analogue pedal, and I presume the Sansamp Deluxe works the same way. So there's hope for you yet!
 19.
They're often the same people.
Yeah. I've either been very lucky or else have very low expectations of my friends.
 20. The worst thing is the large number of w@nkers you get to meet. Having said that, I was thinking the other day of how I've met nearly all my friends though music in one way or another.
 21. Isn't the micro synth analogue? You'll just have to buy 3 of them if you want presets.
 22. That bass is exactly what you'd expect to find on a 81/82 Jazz. S8 serials did turn up on basses into the eighties.
 23. These things popped up under the Montclair and Ibanez brand names (and probably a few more). Most likely dates to the mid sixties as that's when the Hoshino factory stopped making guitars.
 24.
No. There are certain sounds and playing styles that altered tunings are best for.
True, but we don't actually know that what the OP needs to play can't be achieved in by simply tuning down. Since he's likely to be playing about with string guages anyway, choosing them to get the required timbre shouldn't be a problem. It may well be that he does need to adopt the same tuning as the guitarists, for instance if he's playing a lot of chords or open string pedals, but I certainly wouldn't dismiss using a standard tuning out of hand.
 25. It was £40 for the surcharge as far as I know, so the price on the basic model would have been £490. Looking at their site now, the same model will set you back £515, so a £25 increase.
