1.
This is the 1976 Ibanez catalogue http://s93105080.onl...g/1976-1/04.jpg
Different headstock/truss rod access altogether. It's actually the same as the Cimar basses which came out of Fujigen just like the the Ibanez's, but had a few changes of headstock. The one in the link was only used for a short while before they went over to the curvy one like they had on the blazer basses.
2.
I think I'm now calm enough to relate the story of last Saturday. This gig is one we've done before - it's the ceilidh band without Mrs Zero, our regular caller, and with another caller. The organisation is the Pink Sou'Westers, a Birmingham-based GLBT group, who I enjoy playing for despite what the Basschat Thought Police think about me. Got there first, unloaded (I was also doing the PA), set up, soundchecked. Couldn't get the melodeon as loud as I'd have liked through the foldback as it was feeding back (it's got two small external mics on goosenecks fastened to it). Mrs Zero checked the FOH balance which was fine. Played the first set. Melodeon player said in the interval that she couldn't hear things very well. Tried to get a bit more melodeon in the foldback mix through the second set (not helped by her forgetting to turn the sodding thing on for the first dance). We got to the end of the second set, everyone had danced, most of them were dancing the whole evening. Then the melodeon player came over to me and absolutely laid into me. "I couldn't hear the f***ing foldback, I might as well not have f***ing been hear, it was f***ing crap". So I told her that she could supply the PA for the next gig (her and the dulcimer player, husband and wife, have a PA but she wanted me to bring mine). Soon afterwards, Mrs Zero (unaware of the tongue-lashing I'd just had and the criticism of the foldback) told her that the sound was great out front, only to have exactly the same directed at her. They'd also relayed the news a bit earlier that we've been asked not to go back to a pub that we've rehearsed in for some years. I suspect it's because the last couple of times we've played there on a Sunday whereas we used to rehearse there on a Wednesday, but the melodeon player thought that it was because we were crap. She also had a go at Mrs Zero about my bass playing (as apparently that was what was crap about the rehearsals). Quite frankly, the woman is an obnoxious cow. Mrs Zero and I will be playing our last gig with them next month and then quitting.
By the sound of things you're well off out of it. You need to work with someone like that like a hole in the head.
3. Yours would appear to be made in 1990, as they were only made from 1990-1992. http://web.archive.org/web/20100311083242/http://www.ariaguitars.com/int/00int_main/archives_ebass02.html That would tie in with the serial number beginning with a zero - between 75 and 90 the first digit usually denoted the year of any particular decade.
4. Looks lovely, but he's out on the date - it's from about 1980.
5. What's the problem? A record for the number of consecutive weeks in the albums chart is based on... the number of consecutive weeks an album is in the chart. It's not like it's a value judgement on the merits of those recordings.
6. 29 watchers. It seems quite a few people would like to know the answer.
7. At this point I'm just going to say +1 to what everyone else has said (except Lozz's bit about the Ampeg, but only because I've never tried one).
8. I makes no difference whether you use the two outputs on the amp or daisy chain the cabs - both the amp's outputs and the cab sockets are wired in parallel, so both will result in a 4 ohm load when using two cabs. I don't understand why the amp is labelled as 8 ohm by the outputs though - as far as I know the LH500 has a 4 ohm minimum load.
9. Not me, although I've always fancied one. Unfortunately they're victims of Jon Hall's policy of hounding off Ebay anything that looks vaguely like a Rickenbacker, despite the fact that they never made a bass that looks like that.
10. I had one which was made in 1996 and it was made in China. I only got it as it was packaged with an amp and the seller would split them. I'd intended to to sell it on straight away but ended up keeping it for years - it played very nicely indeed. I found the pickups were quite shrill on that one, though I wouldn't be surprised if they've made changes on the newer ones.
11. I would have thought T nuts and bolts would be a solution?
12.
I spent 7 mins waiting for Wiseblood to start and 5 mins wondering if my soundcard/codecs were buggered listening to The Gerogerigegege. You owe me 12 mins you b*stard.
Sorry about that.
^ The Gerogerigegege! One certainly doesn't expect to see them mentioned very often. And not without good reason, I suppose! I stumbled upon one of their albums in a Dutch secondhand record shop, and looked them up based on nothing more than the name and subtitle 'Ultra Sh*t Japanese Band'. I had no idea they would take the interpretation of that title so literally in their performances. *shudder*
My first thought was to suggest Masonna as a purveyor of complete noise, but his stuff has vocals. Sort of. Like The Gerogerigegege his recorded output is completely unlistenable, but he was a stunningly good live proposition. Which I suppose goes to prove that live shows are about much more than just the music. Especially when there is no music.
13.
For example?
The Ampeg SVT? I'm taking this thread with a pinch of salt really. Some people are describing broken amps and others perfectly reasonable amps that don't happen to do what they'd like. All of which is fine as it fits the thread's title, but it doesn't necessarily mean the amp is rubbish. My candidate was an old Marlin combo which once might have been fine for bedroom use, but it was supplied as backline and had a completely knackered speaker.
14. Fair play to you.
15. It's not so much the optimal configuration for the amp you need to watch, but the optimal configuration for the cab. If you post the internal dimensions of the cab and port(s) doubtless someone who is far more qualified than myself will let you know how suitable they are.
16. Soundtracks are a particularly fertile source of this sort of grandiose and often dark music - The Terminator and Dark Knight soundtracks for example. Or you could go for a bit of Wiseblood or The Gerogerigegege. If nothing else they'll be dead happy when you finally come on. 17.
I just told it like it is to a fledgling songwriter soliciting opinion on his song in another thread. I was pretty critical but (I thought) encouraging. I copped a couple of slaps in the face by two other members. I feel sh*t now so I won't be doing that again.
I just read your post post on that thread Nige. It was honest and gave constructive feedback. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe you could have gone down the 'compliment sandwich' route but I've found that you've got to be pretty careful when giving criticism, particularly with people's creative endeavors. I'd hope the OP takes your thoughts in the spirit they were offered as it was a thoughtful and considered review. I'm off to take a listen myself now.
18.
Ok, thank you. Very interesting. I know that commercially released songs get taken off YouTube all the time - I wonder if items such as isolated bass tracks get the same attention, or if the labels don't have the means to track or find them quite so easily and remove them.
There's a thread full of isolated bass tracks on here somewhere. It was pinned but a lot of the youtube links were dead, so yes thee things do get removed from time to time. I know at least Anarchy by the Pistols was redone by the band as they could't find the masters. Steve Jones played the bass and it's different to Matlock's playing on the original.
19.
It should be buried with military honours. The underline is back!!!!!
It's because the sentence begins with a capital 'I' - you've accidentally hit the ctrl key again. Anyway, I was missing the the underline!
20. Very many of them come from Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but some come from the original masters (like some of the isolated Entwhistle bass tracks, which were released on DVD).
21.
Cool I heard bad things about red sub ... Are they crap? Or ok??
Red Sub is just Gear4Music's house brand, and the equipment sold with that brand is sourced from various manufacturers inventory probably with little or no input from Gear4Music beyond some cosmetic details. So the brand Red Sub means very little - the quality of the gear is entirely dependent on the quality of the design and manufacture of the factory it's sourced from. In this particular case the amp comes from the guys that made the Ibanez Promethean and is essentially a clone of that amp. Huge thread right here.
22. Yeah, a great drummer with doubtless a few tales to tell. I was just disappointed he didn't want to tell them - or indeed the details of the gig he was there to promote!
23. If it's anything like the interview he gave Robert Elms recently I wouldn't bother unless you're into monosyllabic grunts.
24. That's nice. They seem to have included a Hartke ice cube dispenser to make up for the wait.
25. I remember Stephen Delft, who some may recall was a luthier and reviewer for International Musician, commenting that it doesn't cost much more to make a good pickup than a bad one. So like xilddx points out, it's all going to to be down to R&D costs. I think a post by Flyfisher in another thread is apposite here.
There is an old story about a multi-million dollar power plant that had mysteriously ground to a halt. All efforts to restart it had failed and an expert was brought in. After studying the problem for a few minutes he took a hammer and hit one of the valves. With a rumble, the plant came back to life. Incredulous glances were shared, grateful cries and high-fives were exchanged. Later, the expert’s bill arrived for the amount of $10,000.00. The outraged executive in charge thought “All he did was hit a valve with a hammer, this bill is ridiculous.” he asked for an itemized breakdown and the consultant responded with a bill that read: “Hitting valve with hammer $10.00. Knowing which valve to hit: $9,990.00.” http://usinghumor.co...e-of-expertise/
