1. At least we can be certain this one is genuine - the pickups aren't centred properly. Again.
 2.
Odd you should say that… whilst hunting for info earlier I chanced upon an utterly uncorroborated statement that 'Alan' (presumably Alan Davey) had a Hondo 2 as a backup if his Ric failed. So it's very dimly possible that there might be a Snaggletooth connection. Question for the experts: As I understand it the 4001S had a set neck, but dot markers & no binding. Was there ever a bound & mother-of-toilet-seat version? If so, the neck plate could have been lashed on there to bolster up a failing set neck joint. Either way it's as fishy as a fish supper on Friday in Fish Week at Billingsgate.
The 4001S had a through neck. There were apparently a few (literally just a few) set neck 4001's produced in the early seventies though.
 3. You can do a spot repair on a small chip, but like everyone else I personally wouldn't bother. Keeping a working bass blemish free is near impossible, and you're just setting yourself up for more anguish with the next one.
 4. The Royal Mail site refers to the Hellenic Post ELTA website for any further information, so it would appear to be ELTA that makes the delivery in Greece. Best of luck with this, it's a sizeable sum to lose for absolutely nothing.
 5. Have you tried searching your browser history?
 6. Soundcloud and Reverbnation seem to the most popular ways of streaming music on social media sites. Reverbnation offers much more in the way of features, like a mailing list manager, but you might not need any of that.
 7. I had to google the 2195. It's the old tranny lead and bass. That's not a good thing, for either lead or bass players.
 8. The Hartke will probably be putting out something like 315w at 8 ohms. You can still use your 250w cab with it, but you'll have to use your ears for signs that it's complaining. If it is, turn down the bass and/or the volume. The volume increase you'll get by unleashing the extra wattage using a 4 ohm cab is... well, disappointingly small. Should you ever feel the need for more volume you'll get a much bigger increase by adding a matching 8 ohm cab.
 9.
If your amp was that delicate, you'd just not lend it. If the other guy has a big fat active preamp in his bass, an eq pedal, or an octaver then he could still do the same level of damage. You're under no obligation to let a stranger use your amp. I'd never criticise anyone for saying no in that situation. But if you are going to lend someone an amp, then letting them change the EQ settings is hardly the end of the world.
It wasn't a delicate amp. SWR aren't really known for their delicacy, but if anyone abuses the EQ you can damage speakers which have much higher power ratings than the amp. So asking someone to go easy with the low EQ is hardly unreasonable - and not everyone knows what a speaker being pushed to or beyond it's limits sounds like. In the instance I mentioned I didn't have a problem with him altering the EQ, but did ask him to go easy with the bass control. I might have had a very good reason for that - it might have been a delicate amp, the speaker might have been on the way out. Or I might have just not liked hearing lots of bass. At the end of the day, it makes no difference. If someone does you a favour you should bear in mind that it is a favour and respect their wishes. If that puts anyone out they can bring their own rig. It's not our job to provide amplification to suit other peoples' requirements.
 10.
Then don't lend them an amp! Saying "no, you can't use my amp" is absolutely fine. Saying "You can use my amp, but you can't touch the EQ" is just...odd.
Not really. Turning up the lowest frequencies can kill a speaker at what can seem modest volumes, and simply telling someone to go easy does't always get heeded. I've said exactly that before only to find every control on the amp dimed to the max. Fortunately the guy was as ignorant about his own gear as he was about mine, and was't getting the level out of his multi fx to make either the clip or limiter lights flash.
 11. In the early sixties guitarists were using strings with wound 3rds - seriously heavy! Some started using banjo strings for the top E, until you could finally buy sets that you could bend the top strings. After struggling with the strings available I would have thought playing bass might have come as a relief! I think bass strings have remained the same guage really. Rotosounds were 105 standard guage from the off, and the La Bellas Jamerson used are still available (though some prefer a lighter guage - I don't know if they were available lighter in the sixties, or whether he just liked the heavier guage).
 12. I noticed the other day that there had been a number of massive old Aria bargains recently. I guess that if you're in the market for one now is the time to buy.
 13.
Less likely. All the non-Aria versions I've seen have two large rocker switches for the pickups instead of the single toggle selector of the Aria.
There's quite a few minor differences I've seen, including the models with only 2 knobs (ooo-er) and those with a 6 bolt neck. Whether these were variations from the same factory, or came from somewhere else entirely is hard to figure out because they all seem to lose the name on the headstock. Which brings us back to an old JapCrap axiom - it's not Brand X unless it says Brand X on the headstock. Talking of which - I don't ever remember seeing one with such a dark headstock. Has it been stained Wayne?
 14. Whites usually darken to a cream or yellowy colour with exposure to UV light, so you're thinking along the right lines. I might be tricky in practice though, and I suspect you'd be better off investing in a small UV light.
 15.
Aria A-200
Or one of the other brands like Silvertone or Clearsound. Quite a few of these about, some with slight variations, and they didn't all seem to originate from the same factory.
 16.
Is because this is the post change one, the previous one was made to get less complaints like:
Has the design of the Hipshot actually changed though? As far as I can remember it's still the same, at least since they came to my attention. The objection JH has with Hipshot is that it shares the same footprint as the OEM item. Which would make for an interesting state of affairs if car manufacturers were so keen on threats of legal action.
 17.
But that's my point about Rockinbetter - they are pretending to be the real thing. Or is it coincidence that they chose that name, chose an identical font, identical truss rod cover, identical headstock shape, and identical fingerboard inlays?
Your point about Rockinbetter is a fair, and is just as applicable to any of the other brands like Dillion or Indie. RIC is absolutely right to go after these and he's backed up by the law. However in the UK private sellers are definitely and deliberately excluded from this law. It's like that to protect anyone that may have legitimately bought an item only to find that many years after it's purchase it has been made subject to a ban on it's exchange. JH may not like but that's the way it is. That isn't stopping him from attempting to block the sale of these items however. The continued sale of decades old 'fakers has arguably almost zero impact on the finances RIC, and certainly less of a direct impact than the secondhand sale of genuine Ricks. It remains to be seen how this policy will affect the current demand for Ricks.
 18.
Back: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item33825a960c not fixed anything.
Complete fail with trying to hide that, putting a random full stop in the 'R' word and it still shows up in a search. Especially when he goes on to use the full word in the body of the ad multiple times.
 19.
The documentation is here - http://basschat.co.u...ost__p__1611094
Cheers Hamster. That didn't show up in a search for 'Rickenbacker'. Regarding the suggestion that 'Rickenbacker' be added to the swear filter, is it possible to replace it with a different word instead of asterisks? Or a phrase - like 'shape of fail', for instance?
 20.
Underground trade is much more fun. Otherwise I'd have no interest in Rick shaped things, since the shape is the shape of fail.
I like that. Shape of Fail bass for sale - has quite a ring to it.
 21. Yep, that's the case in the US but not here. A quick search for 'Rickenbacker' on the IPO site revealed no new trademarks, which means no registered trademark on the body. Which is why I was asking about the documentation - September is quite a specific date, so I wondered what happened then that would make the body now covered by IP law. Not that it isn't necessarily covered, just that RIC would have to go to court to prove it and if that case has already happened he'd be able to point out that precedent.
 22.
I say good for "Mr Rickenbacker" there. Rickenbacker has developed a unique looking - and visually stunning bass. They don't produce my sound, so I don't buy them generally. However, I think they have every right to stand up against the copiers. I know it's not the popular view on here - but I say well done to the man.
He's not standing up against copiers - he's standing up against Basschat. He has no legal basis whatsoever to take action against someone selling their private property in the UK. The law here is quite clear that trademarks only apply to those who trade by way of business - those who manufacture, import or distribute trademarked goods. So what he's doing is threatening BC with legal action for facilitating the sale of copies, doubtless buoyed up by the L'Oriel v. Ebay case (though I suspect hubris may have seen legal threats chucked around anyway). Copiers remain completely untouched by this turn of events.
We've had some further correspondence from John Hall, who has confirmed that the copyright has been extended from the previous position of copyrighted Headstock and Logo/TRC, to now include the body - with effect from last September. This correspondence took the same form as last time, with a clear indication of Rickenbacker's willingness to pursue legal action against those they perceive as breaching that position.
What exactly is this new extension of copyright? There doesn't appear to be any new UK trademarks registered by RIC. Has another case within the EU set a legal precedent? I don't suppose he's offered any evidence or documentation to back up this claim? It's just that he does sometimes seem to talk as if the entire world is under the jurisdiction of the US legal system.
 23. It's a Matsumoku made ET-275, basically a Crestwood. http://www.matsumoku.org/models/epiphone/catalogs/1974/pg5.html Just going on the price of a 280 and knowing guitars usually sell for a bit more, maybe £250 -£300. I'm just guessing really.
 24.
She does compose on bass sometimes i know that much. She is a very talented pianist which is often overlooked.
I remember when these photos were printed in an interview in International Musician - I was sure she spoke about writing on bass as well.
 25. I wouldn't worry about it. I think Warmoth parts are licensed by Fender in any case.
