1.
£4
Got a band lined up for the weekend yet Wayne? Have a great one BTW.
  2.

Aha!
  3. Are we just talking about currently produced stuff? The old Hiwatts must have been top of the tree for reliability and sound quality.
  4. There has been a few threads like this now, and doubtless more that have just given up on the process without commenting. Perhaps something could be stuck up somewhere prominent explaining the new system for those that mainly use the marketplace or don't delve into 'Site News'? The Marketplace rules don't appear on the mobile site.
  5. Errr... RIC has a trademark in it's headstock design, but the clue's in it's name - it has to be for trade to infringe. It's also got to be in a particular category, in this case 'musical instruments'. A cake for someone's personal use doesn't exactly infringe, so perhaps a bit of an over-reaction? They've also trademarked the word 'Rickenbacker' - that doesn't mean nobody else can use it without a license from RIC!
  6. It's got to be said that these sort of threads often get a bit of a poor response. Your best bet is probably to do a search for something along the lines of 'classic rock covers band london' and take a look at where other bands are playing. Lemonrock is a good place to look as well. Best of luck!
  7. I always wondered why they stopped doing them. Perhaps Diago had a word with them, or more likely with the manufacturers if they were originally produced to Diago's spec.
  8.
Once you're done looking at the Diago, go and look at the Johnny Shredfreak power supply. It's the same unit sold under a different brand name at under a third of the price. I've got one and have used it to power a large board with around a dozen pedals (including thirsty ones like a Line 6 tonecore) and never ran out of juice yet!
The Johnny Shredfreak supplies were a bargain, but sadly they're no longer available.
  9. There's the SWR amplite. Can't think of any others that aren't rack sized though.
  10. I was looking at the Ashdown range the other day and noticed the Drophead 200 and CTM 100 are about the same price. Does that mean the CTM is better built or does it not cost that much more to add an extra 100w to a design? Obviously the two amps have different features, but I didn't think the differences were so great that the 200w amp would be so close in price to the CTM.
  11.
In all seriousness?!....you go back to number two offering to sell at 1800 and tell number one ...thanks for the offer I'll get back to you if I don't sell it.....then sit back and wait for number three!
This is the way to go IMHO. Too much can happen in 3 months (notwithstanding any kind of relationship you might have with the person in question), and £1650 is less than I'd be happy to accept at this stage of the game. The lower offer is likely to be an opening position anyway.
  12. What's the story behind that? I always wondered how instruments end up bolted to pub walls.

    1980 P-bass?

Precisions made in 1980 were made pretty much the same way as they had been since '76, with all that entails. There are plenty of nice ones about from that period, but also plenty about that reflected CBS's loosening of quality control. Weight can be an issue (although mine from that year was really light), but some claim they prefer the tone of heavier basses. Check the neck pockets for tightness, and whatever you do play the thing first. Despite the light body, the neck on mine "should never have left the factory" as the luthier who looked at it pointed out.
  14. That's positively lightweight for a Peavey.
  15. I'm not sure what terms Fedex have in place but I know RM will only cover cases if they are adequately packaged. At this point it's probably worth checking through Fedex's T&Cs, although as others have pointed out it's usually the sender that has to make the claim.
  16.
eh? I don't like the guy, but... his point 1) rather than the 2) you quoted covered that... no?
Yeah, you're right actually (as is Jonsmith). I read that as meaning both points had to apply.
  17. Yep, another fine gig from the Jetsonics. Great to see you both again.
  18.
Can we have a picture of the binding and bleed sideways on? I did the Ric thing in my early 20s, it was blue. There is a very clear message for me about the support I would get if I unknowingly purchased a 'grey' import. Always good to see manufacturers standing by the quality of their products and letting that quality stand for itself with end users.
The standout bit for me is quoted below. Even if this weren't a grey import JH seems to be saying there is no manufacturers warranty for anyone outside North America. There are other laws in the UK which should allow for some redress should things go wrong of course, but interesting that RIC wash their hands (presumably in non-biological soap) of responsibility for the rest of the world.
2. If it was new, the guitar was registered, and you were resident in North America (It isn't and you aren't)
19. I seem to remember a post on this subject a few years ago. I think lettsguitars contributed with what I thought was a rather clever way of drilling cavity holes. But I can't remember what it was!
  20. I'll be popping along as well.
  21.
With the tone controls on the bass terror, scooped is what you are stuck with.
This. Bass and treble turned right down and mid right up flattens things out though. Check out the Bass Gear mag review (page 76).

I can't claim any moral high ground at all, as I have the Retrovibe and a John Birch.

I have had personal email rows with John Hall, because I criticised a Ric finish issue that I once asked for basic help and advice on. His attitude to me absolutely stank.

That said, while I think the man can be ignorant and petty (I agree someone selling their own bass SHOULD be left alone), Ric should be able to stop further copies being made.
Nice collection. Actually I agree with you about enforcing his trademarks, but only as it should be - against the manufacturers, importers and distributors. Advertisers of trademarked goods occupy something of a gray area in the UK at the moment, but that doesn't stop JH bully them and sellers. As for RIC licensing cheaper copies, it's not going to happen and JH has said as much. He's no interest in making cheaper versions even though it might make economic sense. He's personally bound up in the brand - his father built up the company into an iconic brand and his mother sketched out the logo by hand. He grew up with the company as part of his life, and views Rickenbacker as a manufacturer of high end instruments that stand shoulder to shoulder with other iconic brands like Fender and Gibson, and used by some of the biggest names in the bass world. As far as he's concerned, that's what Rick does and the other big brands were only bounced into making their own copies because they didn't protect their trademarks. And FWIW RIC is still a small family business rather than a faceless corporation. I don't like the way he goes about many things (including the blind denial of any QC issues), but I don't blame him for trying to protect his IP.
The got EU protection of the headstock a few years ago.
JH claims trade dress on the Rick design, and supports that with a court case. If that ruling applies worldwide it means that he has IP in the design as a whole and he's within his rights to go after any design that infringes. If it's not worldwide, strictly speaking he can only pursue instances within the jurisdiction of the court (presumably the US). In any case Ebay/Gumtree don't care, as they seem to have a policy of rolling over on any Vero claim. Ebay were involved with a case against L'Oreal fairly recently and got their fingers burnt - that case has certainly muddied the waters as far as advertising goods that may infringe a trademark.
  23.
Ric have done the thing Fender and Gibson couldn't do, which is protect their ideas. Hence all the arguably sh*t / better copies out there, cluttering the world up, because some companies don't have the wits to come up with their own design... Fender and Gibson didn't see it coming. Rickenbacker did. However, Ric copyright certain bits of their design, as they are perfectly entitled to do and yet people are up in arms about John Hall setting his team looking for copies on sale? If you want an instrument that looks like a Ric... buy a Ric (says he with a Retrovibe 5er and a John Birch, which I just couldn't turn down at the price), but 4 Rics.
People are up in arms because JH is seemingly tracking down private sellers. Trademark law doesn't apply to private sellers who aren't acting in the course of business. The fact that such things aren't covered by the law apparently doesn't bother JH, as evidenced by his hounding of Hipshot. I have two Rick's but no 'fakers. How does the moral high ground look from down there.
