1. Lots of people have Ricks and don't sound like Geddy, even if they want to. The problem usually lies in the fact that they're not Geddy. Geddy uses Jazzes nowadays, and he still sounds the same. There's more than one way to skin a cat, and more often than not the best way to replicate another player's sound is actually by using something else altogether.
2. Here's that thread on the vintage amps forum I was talking about. Someones added a link to a newer thread that has a bit more info.
3. Ah. It wasn't a thread... it was just me responding to your last inquiry! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/109898-who-remembers-sai-of-standish-coppull/page__p__1017003#entry1017003
4.
My dad has a heap of old heads gathering dust in the loft, including a couple of Sound Cities. I must pull them out and have a look. He also has a cute little thing called a Nolan. Anyone familiar with them? Looks 70s.
There was a thread a few years ago about them. Made in Forest Hill in SE London. I've read mixed views on them over at the vintageamps boards - one guy claimed to have been familiar with them at the time, saying they were rip offs off other designs using cheap components.
5. With Overdrive and Reverb, is that not a guitar amp?
6. I was considering getting a Jet Star a little while ago. I think you've just put me off!
7.
No, neither of them, it had a slider to change the speed I seem to remember
Maybe it's the HTML 5 trial you're thinking of. That supports changing the playback speeds with a slider.
8. I've never tried replacing the pickups on my Ricks, but if I remember correctly from discussion we've had on these boards the Rockinbetters don't have the almost parallel necks that the genuine artical does. It'll be worth your while checking the spacing of the pole pieces of anything you buy just to see if they match the string spacing. Edit: IIRC Hooky6stringbass had a Rockinbetter he fettled with, so maybe drop him a PM to see how he got on.
9. Enjoy your birthday and the sun (which seems to have disappeared from London for the moment)!
10. ...and they've just said it's going to be after 9:00am now. Wish they'd make their minds up.
11. For those of you who aren't going to be at work, Andy Fraser is going to be on TV in about 20 minutes. I didn't realise he was still doing music so I'll be recording it.
12. Chances are someone will shortly be opening a box containing only one of the two speakers they ordered. I'd imagine it won't take long for the supplier to figure out what has happened.
13. No answer for you from myself, but maybe drop Neepheid a PM. He's a big fan of Gibson basses and has an RD so he might have a suggestion for you.
14.
I used the names to mean the same thing until about a about a year ago when I was looking for a distortion/overdrive pedal to use on guitar. I was told this by the guy who makes Twinstomp pedals. Overdrive pedal is designed to give you a high enough output that will "Over drive" your input channel to distort. A distortion pedal provides a distorted signal from the pedal to your amp input. So you would be more likely to use an overdrive on a valve amp and not a solid state amp because when you over drive a tube amp it distorts in a more musical manner. Hope that helps
True enough, although manufacturers confuse matters by producing pedals that are low gain distortion units designed to mimic an overdriven amp channel and labeling them overdrive. By the sound of things the OP is looking for something in low gain territory, which may or may not be labelled as an overdrive. Trying to find exactly which one hits the spot is opening the doors to a world of pain. Got any links to examples of the sort of thing you're after?
15. Running an amp at less than full power won't damage it. Quite the opposite. The speakers' wattage rating is just the maximum amount of electrical power the voice coils can handle for a sustained period without melting. That's it. Your amp isn't trying to push that amount of power into the cab; that's determined by the impedance of the speakers in conjunction with the resistance provided by the volume control.
16. That first pedal is quite interesting, if a little pricey for performing what is a very simple function. I ordered one of these a week ago, figuring it should be a fairly straightforward job to rewire it to a basic momentary footswitch. I say 'should be' as I have a habit of lashing up straightforward jobs like this. So I ordered another, just in case. I'll let you know how I get on.
17. One person's excessive buzzing and rattling is another person's perfect mix of aggression and bite. I'm with BRX on this one.
18.
I've been here since Bassworld. Found it after googling for light weight cabs
Pretty much the same, only I was looking for info on my Trace.
19. It's looking very much like a Silver Series to me. Not all of them had the SS logo, but they all had a very tight radius on the headstock by the E string tuner.
20. And a quick google later... It seems it was invented in 1980 to sell records by Bam Caruso. http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/whats-on/music/coventry-freakbeat-still-being-celebrated-4029682
21. I wonder when it was first used? I knew someone who did a fanzine called Freakbeat in the mid eighties, and that was the first I'd heard of it. Pretty sure it must have been around well before then though.
22.
I doubt it very much. Just as myself and other fans of CAN et al in the 70s didn't refer to what they did as 'Krautrock'.
I can distinctly remember NME using the term Krautrock on one of its covers at the time (this being around 75-77).
23. It's all rock 'n' roll to me...
24. Cort made basses with a headstock quite similar to that, although I don't think it is a surprise that Cort could have been the manufacturer given its Korean origins.
