Do not use Parcelforce to ship musical instruments
Musky replied to chriswareham's topic in General Discussion
Wasn't it Out To Play Jazz who had almost the same experience with Parcelforce, word for word? He had a positive outcome, after a huge amount of effort and emails to the MD. If you're prepared for a fight you might get compensation. Edit: Nope, it was Old Git. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/716-dont-post-your-bass-via-parcelforceroyalmail Even the thread title was pretty much the same. -
OOO thanks looking good but must admit I got some gas for that Vintage discreet pointed out most likely will get one when/if my jazzer sells
I tried one of those Zodiacs a couple of years ago and came within a gnats chuff (™ MDP) of buying one for a friend's son. Lovely neck, but very much like a 70s jazz bass in feel and dimensions.
Greg Lake played them during ELP's reunion during the same time frame. They started a craze for ergonomic styling a lot of basses from the orient copied. Well made at the that time, but I cannot vouch for them now. They currently do not have a distributer in the states these days. Originally made in Japan, most production is in Korea, or the last I heard. Known for that headstock.
I've got a vague memory (probably wrong) that there was some dispute over the ownership of the name, which resulted in a split in the company and two companies using the name - one in Korea and one in Japan. As I said, probably inaccurate but there was some bizarre twist to the fate of the company.

If we're talking celebrity basses I'd go for Lemmy's maple boarded Rick. Just to see if it really is a Rick. And then publicly burn it if it turns out to be a 'faker, just to keep JH happy. Oh, and welcome back to the forum Anne Marie.

Mint design. Lovely minty pickguard too. -
"Don't think I'd recognise a bass guitar." Said to me Friday by a beautiful woman I tried (and failed) to chat up.
Someone must have told her you were the bass player. How else could she have failed to succumb to your charms?
Well that's true as well!
Only when they don't realise which one's the bass player.

"Take up bass. Chicks love bass players."

Ca't really help , but I do recall that someone posted pics comparing the bridge position of three vintage jazz basses and one of them had the bridge much further forward than the other two. Same thing going on here perhaps?

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Musky replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Good spot - it's a CSB380. He's included his phone number, so may be angling for an off ebay sale should anybody be within easy reach of Inverness. -
I was just about to say Jean Luc Pickguard used to sing the praises of these basses. There were two in his household if I remember correctly - one for his daughter and one for himself.

Note/chord recognition software - any help please?
Musky replied to Jigster's topic in General Discussion
Try chordify. It's not perfect so if that doesn't help try some software which will slow down the passage, like Best Practice. -
I think part of the problem BF faces with their cabs is the fact that they use 9mm ply - it just looks flimsy, no matter how well it is braced internally. Marshall uses 18mm ply on their 4x12's and still double up the thickness at the front edge of their cabs. It says 'massively tough', even though it's there just for cosmetic purposes and doesn't add to the overall strength of the cab. As for the finish, it certainly isn't the best looking cab I've seen but a painted finish is pretty much standard on PA cabs and I don't think I've heard too many people complain about the looks. Perhaps it's the actual paint used? Would people prefer a smoother paint or more matt/satin finish? As far as the tone of the cabs, this is really just a 'people like different sounds' shock horror story. It's as ridiculous to expect that everyone should like what they hear as it is to state that they sound crap. It's all opinion based and there is no right or wrong to the matter.

Bridge isn't original but otherwise very nice.
But when Macca plays his Rick it doesn't sound 'clanky' - it's more 'thumpy'.
Doesn't it just.
-
I've got to admit that I felt pretty much the same way as the first post when I was a teenager, which was a hell of a long time ago. Now I realise there are far more sounds available from different basses, none of which will be recognised by anybody else. People look at the shape first and then listen, or else they might recognise that basses come in different scales, which is one of the few real readily identified characteristics which affect sound. Which is why the average Joe can't tell the difference between Macca playing a 'clanky' long scale Rick and a 'thumpy' short scale Hofner.
If you like the tone of it, get another for louder, and more low from coupling. If you don't like the tone, trade it in for another cab you do like. Mixing cabs is unpredictable.
Pretty much this, although it's worth pointing out that some cab manufactures do actually bother checking that different cabs in the same series work with each other. Whether you'll like that sound is a different matter - if you really love the 4x8 get another.

Danelectro French Toast is a fun, cheap effect. Fuzz and octave up, basically a rip off of the Foxx Tone Machine.
Yeh, a Bronco would need that! The harsh, ceramic POS that's in the Bronco already will sound wonderful in that bass!!
If it's the Westone, he says that he put a Bronco pickup in there but changed the cover to a strat type. Not that it makes any difference as the Bronco and early Musicmasters used Strat pickups anyway. Does make me wonder what's living in the Bronco though.

Warning.... Kappalite 3015 NOT designed for Bass!
Musky replied to skidder652003's topic in Amps and Cabs
It does very much depend on the desired end result, one option for top end definition is to add a tweeter to the cabinet to improved HF response. My comment about the 3015LF being a better choice was purely in the context of it being better able to handle deep bass notes, and having a larger maximum mechanical excursion, and not necessarily from a musical point of view. It is common for for 1 x 15 cabs tend to be a bit bass heavy, and its not unusual for 15" drivers to lack mid range clarity, and to some extent the choice of cabinet you make is dependent on the sound you want. From what Ive seen a popular choice is a 4x10, as the combined effect of four 10" drivers gives a similar or better level of deep bass than a single 15, however, being smaller drivers they also retain the ability to delivery punchy bass and often can retain very good clarity on mid frequencies. There are numerous factors which can affect driver failure, and in the instance of a bass guitar, can include playing style, Im not a bass player, so Im not going to try to get into the finer points of this, but certain styles of playing have more dynamic range than others, and it is often prudent to make use of a dynamic compressor to reduce the risk of damage. In most instances, the power level from a bass guitar will not be the sole cause of failure in a driver, as the 'average' volume/power will be well within its operating capacity. A compressor can be used to take the peaks out which can exist when playing slap bass, the dynamics can be massive, and without a compressor you can be driving a speaker to within a fraction of its mechanical limits, a compressor will help control the dynamics to avoid this.
Just to avoid any confusion here, can you confirm that the pictures you've posted are of the driver in question and that you work for Blue Aran? Sorry if it's in your signature, but I'm using my mobile and can't see it. -
Thanks Si I get what you mean the ODB-3 is very mild will go on a quest to find cheaper fun pedals
By the sound of things you're looking for a fuzz rather than an overdrive. The ODB-3 pushes into fuzz territory at it's higher settings. Personally I found the worst thing about the ODB was it's description - it's not really an overdrive, at least not a smooth one, and retains a fizzy edge whatever the settings. I thought it was very good at aggressive tones that stopped short of full on fuzz, the sort of thing that would probably appeal to fans of active basses into GK gear.

Conductive Paint In P'up Cavities - What's That All About?
Musky replied to Gamble's topic in Repairs and Technical
In a word, no. The point of conductive paint (or foil) is to screen the pickups and wiring from interference, so you might like to do it but it's in no way necessary. Especially if you've got low impedance pickups.
