1.
So all these threatening emails that people get sent when trying to sell Ric copies on gumtree/eBay uk are just all mouth, they couldn't actually do anything?
As far as I'm aware (and I'm no lawyer) statute law just refers to trade, but this has been interpreted by the courts as trade by way of business (the act specifically refers to manufacturers, importers and distributors). There's nothing to prevent anyone from testing this interpretation however, which would inevitably prove expensive for both parties. Even if a private individual won the case it would prove to be a costly and draining experience. For websites that could be seen as intermediaries the situation is slightly different, in that the L'Oriel vs Ebay case has muddied the waters. Again, it would take a court case to establish with any certainty whether the site could be seen as facilitating the sale and thus in breach of trademark laws. It's far easier to cave in to threatening letters than go through the cost and stress of a court case.
 2.
To put some context and balance to all of that, the Hall family actually acquired Rickenbacker in 1953, way before Japenese companies started copying Rickenbackers. I remain in the apparent minority who cannot see any problem with a company protecting its own design rights.
I have no problem with RIC protecting their design rights either but trademark laws in the UK apply when it's trade by way of business, i.e. not applicable to private sellers.
 3.
Which should be fixed om new models now they've embraced CNC, no?
Not necessarily. Plenty of basses have had their neck profiles deliberately changed over the years, and the 4001/4003 is one of them.
 4. I gave up after 30 seconds. The lush strings seem to be a departure from their previous sound and the lack of traditional rock band instrumentation is a bold move for them, but I really didn't like it when the pizzicato violins kicked in. They appear to be targeting the Il Divo/Nigel Kennedy market with this one, and I can see it will win them some new fans.
 5. To be fair, the question he was asking was about the validity of using different speakers, so the suggestion that he use a different cab altogether without any reference to the limited excursion of these speakers and the risk to them might have seemed completely off topic. The response of these cabs falls off a cliff at about 100hz so no, the won't produce any real bass but they do have a strong response in the low mids. I've used the same Marshall 4x12 for about 30 years and in that time only one speaker has gone - and that was when I lent it to a friend's rehearsal studio for six months. It sounds great for what I do, but I've learnt I don't go for a lot of bass.
 6.
Is there no way to allow users to bump their own ads/restrict thread replies to the thread starter?
Fortunately iCastle has given an answer on this question before. http://basschat.co.u...ost__p__2278057
 7. Just spotted a 'faker. No pictures, but putting the words 'Rickenbacker' and 'copy' in the title of the listing may have been a mistake...
 8.
Huh? Didn't the OP say "pair of 8 ohm cabs", in which case two in parallel is 4ohms?
Yep, but unless I'm mistaken the Superfly is a 2 x 250w amp and to get the full 500w he'd need 4 ohms on each channel.
Hi, the cabs are both 210's that say 8ohm on the back. Can I replace the speakers to make a pair of 4ohm cabs? Cheers
You can replace the speakers but you're then into finding speakers that suit a sealed cab of that size without really knowing if you'd prefer the sound of the original speakers. With the cost of 4 halfway decent speakers you'd probably be better off selling the Superfly and putting it towards another amp.
 9.
After a read of the ashdown web site the super fly runs at 500w at 4ohms, not 2. How do i tell how they are wired? I've got a multi meter, just no idea about how to use it to test how they are wired. The genz does look perfect though if its not possible to switch it up. Cheers Martin
Unfortunately it's not possible to wire an 8 ohm cab with two speakers to 4 ohms.
 10.
Wise words! Where could one take it to get checked over?
Check out Molan's sig!
 11.
I was just wondering which was better to have for silent bass changeovers a mute pedal or a circuit breaker cable? I like the idea of both so what is out there guys that is worth looking at? I have only really seen murder one mute pedals or Planet waves circuit breaker cables. and to be honest I have never bothered with them before so I am not really sure what other brands or models are worth looking at.
Have you got a tuner pedal? If so it most likely mutes the output when you tune.
 12. John, Sid, Steve and... Michael.
 13. Yep, the Genz Benz combos are currently going cheap, but that's because Fender have discontinued the brand so something to weigh up for the future. If I remember correctly Fender have said they'll continue support for at least two years. Otherwise the TC Electronic BG250's are likely to have the effect you're looking for, and have the benefit of being much cheaper than the Ampegs. I'd look at the 210 just for the added volume. Edit: Forgot to mention that the original BG250 are currently discounted as the Mk 2 (with controls for an extra toneprint) has just been released.
 14.
True enough, I get the whole dismissive "plastic" thing a lot with my Status basses. Usually till they actually try one of them I just wonder if with some experimentation with different types of engineered timber has been done, by keeping the glue content down and aiming for a fairly light weight (with chambering probably) I wouldn't be surprised if they could get some good results. But probably not with standard types of ply that's available at the moment.
The Edmond I mentioned earlier in the thread (a B2V) has a chambered body and comes in at a good weight, although I seriously doubt there was any experimentation going on as to what sounded best. I'm not sure what kind of effect glue would have on the sound, and it opens a whole "which glue is best for metal" debate! Are Status' not put together with what is effectively glue? Ultimately any manufacturer would have a hard time persuading the public that plywood is a good basis for a bass - there are just too many ingrained opinions and the association with cheaper basses would probably be too much too overcome. Neither Gibson's nor Ibanez's attempt to sell MDF as tonewoods were particularly successful. Still, there's always the 'hand selected custom laminated Timber' route for them.
 15. The paint has stood up quite well for an old Sovtek.
 16. Weirdly the last thing I read before this thread was a quote from Mornats in tommorichards' sig.
"A band never auditions a drummer. If the drummer turns up and doesn't kill anyone they've got the job. And even then, it depends on which band member they kill..."
17. Purely anecdotal, but I've seen plenty of posts where owners of expensive instruments have been impressed with the tone of their cheap Squiers (or similar), and been surprised when they've discovered it was ply. Ed Freidland uses what he describes as the Fabulous Egmond also for "roots music", and that also has a body made from ply. Ply gets a bit of a bad rap IMHO. It's perfectly capable of making the basis of a good sounding body, but you'll have a hard time convincing anyone to overcome the association with low end instruments.
 18. Hmmm... Polishing basses. It'll never catch on.
 19.
I desperately wanted to contact the buyer, but you can't.
Yeah, they're not even publishing the buyers full user ID when feedback is left now.
 20. I seem to remember Bill saying that speaker specs are usually published for the 8 ohm version, but some of the parameters will be different for the 4 ohm version. I haven't got a clue how much difference that will make in the real world.
 21. Just a thought, but I wonder if any of those bidders are going to be taking advantage of Ebay's policy of instructing bidders of counterfeits to keep the item whilst also refunding them?
 22. MXR micro amp circuits are readily available, and any half decent effects builder could make you one. It's quite likely that there are builders about who already make clones as part of their range. Or alternatively you could probably find a micro amp clone originating in the Far East for very little and gut that for the board.
 23. That rather suggests the amp isn't earthed properly.
 24. You can also buy splitter boxes for speakon connectors.
 25.
Good point, and thanks..I think that if this were an option, he would have pursued it. He is reluctant to work without the schematics though, and Ibanez have not replied to any of his requests. I don't know if it would be economic even if possible. I might be better off holding on to the speaker and hope that something turns up by way of a replacement amp.
He'd be better off sending the request to Beta Aivin (Elder Audio). They designed and built the Promethean for Ibanez, as well as the various clones. The power sections of the Promethean and the clones are the same.
