1. For that kind of money I'd be looking for a refinished or stripped bass that is otherwise pretty much original. They go for considerably less than even quite worn instruments and would fit your preference for a players bass. And obviously a private sale where you can inspect the bass would be cheaper than going through a dealer.
 2. I'm wondering if we'll get to see all, or indeed any, of these in the UK. I don't think Peavey's last lightweight bass amp (the Headliner 600) ever made it to this side of the pond.
 3. I'm looking forward to this massively, so thanks to you Stevie and Lawrence for putting the effort in.
 4.
So Behringer do know what those things mean, interesting.
No, they just reverse engineered them.
 5. Oh, and a quick google reveals http://www.behringer.com/news/index.php/beginner-tips-the-language-of-guitar-amplifiers/ Not exactly comprehensive, but doubtless useful for some.
 6. DI = Direct Injection, Used for send a balanced line level signal (usually) to mixing desks. EQ = Equalisation (i.e. the tone controls). I've an idea this could become a useful sticky.
 7. DiscoFreq have a round up of new pedals at NAMM. The Hiwatt John Entwistle and RMI Basswitch models look interesting, but I'm expecting them all to be quite pricey. http://www.effectsdatabase.com/events/namm/2014
 8. Most pedals are latching - they stay on until you hit the switch again. With momentary switches the effect will only be engaged while you keep your foot on it. So unless you've got a something in mind that needs very brief bursts of distortion you're better off with a latching switch.
 9.
A lot of them do but by no means all. Japanese manufacturers started doing this when early export instruments were plagued by badly warped necks, when unseasoned timbers reacted with a change of climate. The quick solution to this was the 3-piece quarter sawn necks seen on many Mats and also on a lot of other 60s/70s MIJ instruments, including Teiscos, Fujigens & Kasugas. I guess as manufacturing became more sophisticated, better quality woods were used & it became less of a necessity - I'm sure I've read about imported maple being used for necks. I'd say you see 3-piece necks more often on Fujigen Fender copies than Matsumoku - most of the pre-serial Ibanez & Antoria Ps & Js have them. J.
Oh well, that's my one tell for a genuine Mat out the window. I knew Mat weren't the only ones using this construction method but I was sure I'd read somewhere that all Mats had used this since the early sixties. Probably on Ebay .
 10.
The Jedson's a Matsumoku Jazz, likely the same bass as the Aria Pro J copies of the mid/late 70s. The pickups, which are "normal" J types only with height adjusters at the ends, only seem to appear on Matsumoku Jazzes. Aside from that it's very similar to most decent quality later Jazz copies ie pretty accurate - soilid timber body, full-size tuners etc.
I'd assumed the Jedson couldn't have been a Mat because a has a single piece of wood making up the neck. I thought all Mats had three piece quarter sawn necks since the early sixties? Isn't that right, or were my eyes playing me up?
 11.
Here's a Jedson. I thought that Jedson were down the cheaper and less fancied end of Japanese basses, and the earlier Jedsons were said to be poor. Didn't George Harrison have a Jedson guitar before he bought hsi Gretsch? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2a368efc94 Edti: Or was it a Futurama that Harrison had? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item5660a7190a It seems that it was a Futurama that Harrison had. The rather confident sellers of Japanese basses seem to be out in force today. http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649
That's weird. The Jedson has a Matsumoku neck plate on it, although the neck isn't (nor anything else on the bass by the looks of things). Harrison did use an old Futurama but it was one of the early Czech built ones. By the sixties they were being made by Hagstrom (who were also selling them under their own brand) and that's what the one in the auction is.
 12. +1 on listening closely. Best Practice is a handy bit of kit for PC users that enables you to slow down songs to a manageable speed and loop sections. Move the pitch up an octave if you're having trouble hearing the bass lines.
 13.
Why do you think the number is increasing? It seems to me the pro and anti-Ric camp stays pretty much the same, whichever side of the debate you sit on.
I own a couple of Ricks, which I suppose puts me in the 'pro' camp, but I don't particularly like the way JH goes about business. This goes way beyond his attitude to 40 year old 'fakers (which I can actually understand). So yes, it has tarnished the brand for me and it's why I'm not inclined to sing the praises of the basses.
 14. There are many reasons why it's worth avoiding Ebay's scheme. You've listed a few of them. Glad you've received your bass relatively painlessly.
 15. I hate seeing threads like this popping up - there are way to many thieving bar-stewards out there. There's a pinned thread in the Bass Guitars forum that seems to cover any nicked gear, so it's probably worth cross posting there
 16.
True, if it is designed to run at 8ohms only but most guitar amps are happy to take either 8 and 4ohm loads. Any lower and then you may start to smell something nasty.
Fixed for you. A quick look online reveals that the internal speaker is disconnected when the extension socket is used, so it's likely it's already fitted with a 4 ohm speaker. So the only way to get this amp louder is to use a more sensitive internal or extension speaker, and in the case of the extension cab something with 2 or more speakers is likely to do the job (although Laney don't gives any specs for the speaker fitted so it's impossible to work out how it fares in this department).
 17. There have always been some fakers that slip through the net. I'm really not sure why some get away with it and others don't, and I've seen some reach completion when they contain the words 'Rick' and 'copy' in the body of the listing. JH seems to patrol personally, so perhaps sometimes he just has better things to do with his time?
 18.
Would be an awfully nice box for those of us who wonder why there aren't many more cheap HPF. You get the thumpinator, the fdeck and ...... well what else? Thanks for posting the graphs
As I understand it the roll offs on the graph above don't go anywhere near that found on the Thumpinator or Fdeck. The boost the Mooer gives in the lows might be some cause for concern with some cabs as well.
 19.
You never know. I've got a friends Marshall that looks similar vintage but is only 30W and 2x12, and is really not that good (lots of issues on the PCB, now sorted) but it is loaded with 2 Celestion Greenback speakers, the "vintage" ie '70s ones are quite sought after by guitarists and go for quite good money.
+1 The later Lead & Bass tranny heads go for about £100, so the value of this is likely to be in the speakers, especially as the grille cloth on yours was only used in the early-mid seventies. No idea how much they're likely to be worth though, and I would have thought if it's equipped with bass speakers they're probably not worth as much as dedicated guitars ones.
 20. If it's the gasket you should be able to use a suitable weather strip. The surround will be more of a problem but a quick google reveals foam/rubber surrounds are available from overseas, but nothing is immediately obvious in the UK. You could get in touch with Blue Aran who might be able to source them, or Wembley Loudspeakers who are pretty good at repairing almost anything that's wrong with a driver.
 21.
anybody got any thoughts on this http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4d17413e45 wondered if it was a Matsumoku
I don't know what it is but it's definitely not made by Mat - no three piece quarter sawn neck.
 22.
I've been trying to find a small cab with enough gigging power that I can lift up 6 flights of stairs after a gig. My budget has landed me with a 4ohm 1x12 Eden, but in the shared rehearsal room is a Barefaced Midget. I lifted it and it felt around half the weight of my own. Unfortunately I can't get permission to have a play through it. Would be curious to know if they come in 4 + 8 ohm versions
The Midget uses an 8 ohm driver which isn't available as a 4 ohm version. The difference in volume between using 4 or 8 ohm driver isn't huge though - in fact it's really rather small.
 23. Maybe something like this would do the trick.
 24. I'd assumed that it remained in this forum because it's hidden from view from non-members and so won't show up in any search engines. Perhaps Off Topic might be a suitable place, although that would be anomalous as well.
 25.
Question for personal clarification - can we still post pics of owned instruments that are not for sale? Not sure about the breadth of JH's litigious hissy-fit! Jon.

I've been referring to my Cimar bass, which looks vaguely like the bass of a well known USA manufacturer. Do I need to be so circumspect?
Hamster's post which laid down the rules on this said
Posting links to other sites containing adverts for Rickenbacker products is not permitted. Discussion remains unchanged.
He doesn't specifically mention photographs but if used for purely illustrative purposes they would seem to fall under the rubric of discussion.
