1. Cheers and thanks for the input guys. I think this will stay as an 'I wonder?' bass. It plays nice and it's off to Bob, my guitar 'set up guy', so I'll enjoy playing the mystery bass even though I haven't a clue what it is. :-)
2.
I don't know anything by this guy although I feel like I should. Is this a good album to start from ?
If you've never heard of Mark King, good luck listening to his stuff and trying to play it! The guy's a genius in my opinion! You might want to start with a very expensive and rare Wal Bass by the way..... :-)
3.
Nope, me too. I'm on FB these days, but I did perfectly well without it for years. I only joined when a couple of other musicians pointed out that it was a good way to keep in touch with the myriad other musicians that I was meeting at the time - a little less "forward" than giving someone a business card or a phone number, if you will. The fact remains, you may be reassured to know, that most bands realise their own website is the way to go. Their own little space with which they can do what they please, and design to reflect the band's character. Increasingly, with the way FB is restricting your band's ability to share information unless you pay them, the FB pages are becoming more a way for the band to show off to their friends. The one key use it still has is for people to look up your band, get a bit of general info and maybe follow it if they're interested. A bit less forward than signing up to your band's mailing list, if you will.
Wow! I completely understand the sentiment but hey, there is so much you can do now to populate your own space. I'm 47 (my 14 year old youngest daughter knows more about this stuff than I do!) but seriously, if you want it bad enough you find stuff out. Websites are old hat unless you know what you're doing, you need a 'Platform'. FB isn't about showing off if you have the right 'plugins', the right 'copy' and the right 'videos'. I just helped a mate get a spot on the: http://www.swedenrock.com/index.cfm?lg=2&pg=82 and that's through Facebook. No money changed hands, it wasn't devious record company politics. It was simply someone knowing what they were doing and leveraging it. Personally I think it's a massive shame that so much talent and skill goes unnoticed just because of a fear of technology! Get involved, learn: it's all free on Google and get your stuff out there. By the way 'MySpace' is dead......
4.
I've got an FB Page for Musicians in general but the back story is my old band reforming after 30 years. You're all welcome to post links, hit the 'Like' and 'Share' buttons. over 320 folks on there so far, must be doing something right! :-) I'm going to go through all the Pages posted on here and 'Like' em all, share and share alike. Here's the link: https://www.facebook...eWorldWideMusic
A little postscript on the power of this stuff...... over the last year or so I've been dabbling in 'the dark side', yes, I've been getting guitar lessons (I know, but I really love my Gretsch and want to do it better justice!) and my teacher (Jonny Scaramanga) has a band. By promoting his stuff and engaging the people who follow my Page (amongst others) he's just won a slot at the 'Swedenrock' festival this year! He'll be playing along side the likes of Kiss, Rush, Iron Maiden, Europe et al! And he got there because of Facebook! It's really powerful s@"t guys.... Check out the 'Page' (signature) and see for yourselves. I'm not a promoter or management or anything else, and I get nothing from this (apart from a few more 'Likes' on my Page), I just thought I'd help out..... He's now playing a huge European Rock Festival, are you? So, yes this stuff works and the more we get friendly and cross promote everyone's stuff the better! Here's the link the the festival for those that are interested:http://www.swedenrock.com/index.cfm?lg=2&pg=82 and everyone else; check out the Page. you'll probably find I've already 'Liked' you and am exposing your music to the masses as we speak.

6. The neck is chunky on this and I don't like it even though it tapers off to the thin Jazz style. (to be replaced!) Still got my original K Bass I had from '79! I bought it to replace the Fenton Weill Bass I had that was really hard to play. The Kay is still with me (for pictures and nostalgia only) that's why I know (complete respect all) this is not a 'nasty' old bass, it's way too nice, I think that's why I'm stuck on what it could be. I'm even thinking it could be an Ibanez lawsuit with a replacement neck, Di Marzio pickups and unmarked hardware. As I say, I really appreciate your feedback, we'll figure it out in the end! Be really good to the see the pics of your old Columbus and K's as comparisons. Attached a picture of mine (K bass) 30 years ago and today, blooming awful thing!
7. 'Tits on the Radio' Scissor Sisters 'Fall in Love' Tom Jones (the sound of the bass on that intro!!!) 'Yummy Yummy Yummy' Pinky and Perky Embarrassing enough! But hey, I like 'em!
8. Get the 'Commitments' CD and cover the lot. Boring as hell but drunk wedding goers love it! (Sorry, a little cynical I guess.)
9. A mate had a Columbus years ago, and I have to say it was horrible but obviously there was always the lucky 'nice one'. The body on this is lovely and the neck is so nice it's unreal. I'd be surprised if it was a Columbus but I'm always willing to take ideas. The truss rod adjuster threw me completely too, hence thinking it could have been a later addition/ swap. Thanks for the ideas.
10.
Perhaps a bit like Led Zeppelin didn't have Willie Dixon and others in mind.
Well, it's all come from somewhere!
11. I suppose this will always be a contentious subject. Just wrote what I thought was a really 'sweet', cool song with a band mate. Just guitar and vocal with a little bass noodling in the background. We then played it to another band member. Before we'd got to the chorus, his hands were up 'let me stop you there boys, it's ''Going To California'', you can't do that.' So here's the thing. It has different chords, different melody and the chorus is way different. It turns out it 'reminds' him of 'Going To California', it's not the same at all. That's the thing for me. Just because a song 'reminds' you of something, surely doesn't make it derivative. Neither me nor the guitarist remotely had Led Zep in mind when we jammed it into a song; it just arrived! The simple fact is we all arrived way too late (BTW, I'm 47 at the end of this month) to come up with something that hasn't been done before by someone, somewhere, at sometime even if you don't know it yet. Best thing to do: play on, play what you like, listen to what you like and if it reminds you of something good....... isn't that actually a good thing?
12. Hi all, I've double checked this is the right place to post this question with moderator first so hope you guys can help cast a little light on this. I just picked up a nice little precision style bass that I would like to try and identify. If you can help, great, if you can't it'll remain a mystery; no big deal. The thing with this bass is that there is not one distinguishing label, tag, mark or anything. It plays like a dream, has beautiful tone but I'd really like to know its origins for the sake of knowing, so I hope someone, somewhere may have an idea. Here's the spec: The guy I bought it from had it for 27 years and he bought it from someone that had owned it for at least 7 years which makes it an approximate 70's era bass. Solid, one piece body. (heavy like a seventies 'P') Tuning keys at an odd angle on the reverse of the headstock Neck, I suspect to be an addition at some stage, laminated 3 piece flamed maple, with a beautiful flamed maple fret board jazz style (approx. 38mm at the nut) 20 fret. 13 hole, three ply scratch plate (with a screw in the centre). No marks on the pickups except 'PAF' on stickers and the little hex type adjusters on the poles. Sound wise the pickups are punchy and very loud. At some point someones added a nightmare 'nut' that looks like something made in the shed from bits of old aluminium. There are no identifiers on hardware or electronics or neck pocket. I'm completely at a loss. A mate of mine suggested it may have come out of the Ibanez factory mid to late seventies but apart from that, not a clue. Anybody got any ideas?
13. BTW, I can't believe that BassTractor worked out my acronym! I was sure that was safe!! :-)
14. Sorry, that was a long post. Cheers guys, great to have found you.
15.
Hey Coach, Welcome! Wow, what an introduction. I've always wanted to be coach at the Central Bureau for Gynaecology myself, but I guess it's nice enough to know one. As to getting a complete rig, the For Sale forum sports extremely low prices these days, so you're in for a steal or steals. As to the Sabre, it may be a relief to learn that Music Man have become a brand for losers like MusicMan20, Brensabre79, stingrayPete1977 and BassTractor, so there's little reason to hunt for the new Sabre Classic or even the tantalising Armada bass or the Game Changer with control app. Effing losers. Enjoy the site! best, bert
OK, getting a feel maybe for the sense of humour on here! Thanks guys for the welcome. I may not have kept up with bass developments over the years but I've been merrily playing at home with guitars and keeping up the performance stuff with vocals. Imagine; an ex bassist fronting a 9 piece Swing band (all pro's) for the BBC et al! (yep, that's me!) Well, someone did say to me once: 'the bass players are always the 'cool' ones in the band!!! (I won't put 'lol' in that, but I did seriously laugh out loud at that!). And now things have turned full circle. Here I am: 46 years old, my old band from 1979 have reconvened and I'm playing bass again and totally enlivened with the fantastic array of 'stuff' that's out there!!! I wonder how many people dream of this (getting together with their original muse) but never take action? Well, never mind. This looks like a great place to be, so from an 'old bassist' to you experts and virtuosos: I look forward to learning!
