Where to start when starting a band...
Damonjames replied to theyellowcar's topic in General Discussion
Jam nights are a great source, you get to see prospective band mates in action and this can save you the hassle of auditioning people who really have no ability. It also allows people to see YOU! Failing that, joinmyband.co.uk has proven useful as well as musolist.com Be patient and know what you want before you start out, if you settle you at get a few Months Into it and realise it's not for you and then you have a to start the process all over again. -
Interstate is in our set, and I LOVE playing it! Plush is another fave of mine.

I sold thunderbird some tab books, as is usually The case on basschat, he was a pleasure to deal with. Paid on quickly and great comms. Top Bloke !

Exactly as thunderbird, sellisnba bought a bass tab book from me, absolute gentleman. Paid quick and was ok with waiting until I returned from hold to ship. Look after that foot mate!!

Don't let that hold you back!! I run a 115 and a 212 (both gk neo) and they are awesome. The 115 sounds so modern and clean, I was blown away the first time I tried it solo. I wouldn't Hesitate to run 2 115's instead if that's was became available. Good luck with the sale mate, if I had the cash spare I'd buy it just to have a spare cab. The neo series are MASSIVELY under appreciated cabs especially for the price

Agree totally, the guy is just amazing. I am very fortunate in that I get to play a few of his tracks (hopefully a full set soon) in my current band, he is by far the most "groovy" bass players in rock. Although he says he stole all his stuff from jamerson, I still think he is awesome.

Hey guys, I have some preliminary plans in place, so if everyone who is interested please send me your email via PM and we can start a group discussion regarding details and what we want to achieve. Look forward to hearing from you all!
I am GASing for a Stingray. Another bass player I know is GASing for a Jazz. I have a Jazz, he has a Stingray. So we are going to lend to each other, hopefully cure the GAS, and not lose any money doing it. Time to set up a BC GAS-aholics lending service I think...
Brilliant idea!!

In the flesh mate, but some people have said they would like to join, but live too far away so we may look at a Skype or similar if we can. I think we will have to get up and running first though!
-
It will be subject to internet availability guys, I will let you know when I have some more info!
-
Great response guys! I will have a chat with a bass teacher or two and see if they are interested. Will let you know more when I have more info, exciting stuff!!
Yep - sounds good to me, always looking to expand my horizons on bass and always good to meet other local BC'ers. Slightly off topic but maybe the Rehearsal Space also serve as a NW Bass Bash?
Have you been speaking to Karlfer?? Lol. I would need to clear that with the owners Of the practice room, but the thought did occur to me as a cure for GAS, everyone just bring your gear along and try stuff you a re GASing for and hopefully find out you don't like it. Back on topic though, I reckons if we can get a couple more people on board we might be in to something guys. If we can get 6-8 people I'll talk to some teachers and try and sort the room

Just for the record, I wasn't after a 1k bass that can do everything! I was more after opinions on a fender jazz/or active vs the like of the boutique "super jazz" basses that are about, or builders who use the wood equivalent of baby seal eyes to build their basses out if on account of their "exceptional" tone quality.

Ok guys and girls, and mods feel free to redirect this as appropriate. But I got a PM today regarding a thread I started a couple of months back about bass teachers in and around the wigan (ish) areas. And there are some decent guys about to fill this spot, but as they are working musicians, timing seems to be the issue if you want regular lessons. Also, cost has some factor in it as some of them charge in accordance withe it experience level (entirely justified IMHO) but that doesn't always help us me mortals. So the thought occurred to me, why don't we start a study group? Just as it happens,I know a great rehearsal space that may have just become available, and it got me thinking, if a few of us could get together, we could hire the room and have a quality tutor come in for 3 hours one week, then we can all push each other and help each other out for the rest of the month. Obviously the syllabus as suck would be agreed alone by consensus, but I think it could be a great way to meet some new basschatters and also learn something along the way. If this sounds like nonsense ten by all means tell me, but if anyone is interested, either post in this thread or PM me and we can see if we can get this going. Mods, I would like to stress this will be a strictly not for profit excersize, just trying to expand the concept of an online community!

At first guess, I'd say you just need more relief in the neck. When you say you "set up" your own basses, does that include truss rod adjustment? I dig in pretty hard, and have had to put a little More tension on the truss rod on occlusion to clear the issue. You will have to deal with higher action on the skinny frets as a result, but at least you can play with a reasonable action where you will be spending most of your time.

Do you get the sound isolation problem with the acs moulded plugs though??
-
I think I have opened a can of worms! At least it is Nice to know that the majority are of the same mind set as me. I just look at the quality and variety in the sub 1k mark and can't imagine straying outside that. For those of you who have/do good luck and I hope you enjoy your basses as much as I enjoy mine. I also have a passion for old cars, particularly hot rods from the 50's, at a hot rod rally in Australia (my homeland up until 2 yrs ago) I was with my mate in his model A roadster pickup, which was flat black with flames or what is also known as a "rat rod", which didn't stop cruising the while long weekend. As we slowed to talk to some friends, we were passed by a guy in a 1955 Chevy that had easily had $200k spent on it, and the guys just looked envious and said "you've got one really fun ride there mate!" I think that really sums up everything in life, it doesn't matter what you have, if you enjoy it!

I have had a recurring dream where I am auditioning to play bass in metallica, it's a bit wierd, but it kind if feels like the post newsted days. The only trouble is, I can't remember how to play any of the songs!!! It's horrendous stood thee in front of the idols trying to blag their songs!!

Hey all just after a bit of advice really. I have been using ACS ER20's for about 18 months now and while I don't find the fit all that good (I have to keep pushing then back in) the hearing protection is great. I tried the noizezz ones that were about £15 quid and they were rubbish so I'm looking for an alternative. I wanted to get some custom moulded plugs, but then I'm concerned about the sound isolation, so started to think of IEM. There is a guy on eBay in the US that takes your shure IEM and he makes them into custom moulded ones. Looked at the samson 2 channell wired amp to power them, but then worry again about hearing the full mix in a love situation. Any thoughts on whether I am over thinking it all or if there are some low cost options to get around it!

Hey all, this may seem like a nonsense topic, but Its something I have been considering for a a while now. After taking up playing again a bit later in life, and having a "proper" job does afford you the luxury of being able to afford quality gear. But from what I have seen, and played within availability, the question I ask of you all is, do you really NEED to spend over a grand on a bass to get the job done? Please don't think that if I was a full time musician earning millions that I wouldn't have sheds full of basses, but in reality, (used prices of coarse because the mark up on some new basses is just obscene) when I look at what's available I really can't justify spending more. For that budget, you can get a used US stingray, 4 or 5 with or without frets, most used warwicks and spectors of any persuasion, most recent and some vintage fenders and pretty much anything that has credibility. Am I ignorant? But why would you spend more? I know wal and some of the other "boutique" builders make exceptional quality instruments From gorgeous peices of wood, and Sadowsky make amazing fender knock offs that are probably a millions times better than the orifginal (ducking for cover!!), but I just don't get it. Maybe I'll understand it one day when I have loads of spare cash at my disposal! Not trying to incite a riot, lol, just really interested in what makes those of you who have, open up the cheque book and dump 4 figures (maybe more) on what a fellow basschatter referred to as a "poxy lump of wood"!
