1. I officially hate you again Patrick.... I thought you had Definately decided to keep it "this time" Good luck with the sale mate!
2. It's the gigs that make all the hard work practicing worthwhile. I have two kids under 4 yrs old, and have to admit, when you finally lay down about 2 am after unpacking from a gig, and the kids up at half six (if you are lucky they don't wake up in between) it does hurt. But the thought of not gigging as a musician to me at least is like having a d@!k and only using it to pee.....
3. My USA SUB 5 was amazing, it had complete authority and growl, my emg BQC spector which I bought when i sold it is somewhat anaemic by comparison. Going to switch to the tonepump to see if I can get it back. Slight thread drift aside, I couldn't really see you bit being able to dial in a good mix with a 2 band
4. I am rediscovering some music I would have possibly condemned in the past based on the fact it was root note only type bass lines. The simple fact is this: Sometimes, that is all that is required. There are many players, granted most from a bygone era, that made a career out of this type of playing (cliff williams springs to mind) the fact is that it "is all that is required", could you imagine ACDC with an over complicated bass line? It just wouldn't work. The important thing I think is, Don't assume that the bass player only played root notes because that's all they knew how to play. Someone else has alread mentioned, it does take great restraint and focus to do this style of playing (if you know anything about the instrument you are playing of course!)
5. Fernandes gravity 5 deluxe I'm yet to try one myself, but they look very nice, and from all accounts have a nice slim and fast neck. Plus with active emg jazz pickups there would be plenty of tonal variety. It was good enough for Rob Trujillo to record with, and had yamaha and warwick try and replicate it's sound on his custom basses. Easily in your budget if you can find one!
6. I also have a jazz with dimarzio double coil jazz pickups in series (I think?) and it sound really full. The neck pickup on its own could get close to my pj with the p quarter pounder singled out
7.
Get a P/J bass set up and you have the best of both worlds. That P bass sound that sits so well in a band mix and a J pickup at the bridge for that....J bass at the bridge sound I always think that on it`s own, a P bass doesn`t sound very inspiring but when you hear it in a band situation, it really comes into it own.
PJ all the way. Even in the fully off position that bridge pickup makes for a nice thumb rest !!
8. I play this song in my current set. I tried playing it on a 5 for convenience sake, but it does make the fingering a bit tedious as it was originally played on a 4. The octave for the main riff in the verse is ok, but the little walking lines get trickier in this tuning. I couldn't be assed to stick with it and just went to my p/j With regards to strings, I just use my standard roto's 105's, it will help get you closer to his original tone which is a little rubbery I guess. Most importantly though it saves having a bass for just one song, because if you try and tune up to e with bigger gauge strings, it will ruin your action/setup. Keep it simple matey! Would also recommend a sansamp vt bass to get that overdriven ampeg sound!!!
9. I'm pretty open when it comes to music genres, I prefer some more so than others, but struggle with some of the "pop" stuff. Having said that, that's from a listening point if view, I find nearly all music enjoyable to play!
10. After my last gig, this could be a good idea, more so on the side fret markers. I had some foot lighting that was hell bent on burning my retinas out, which meant neither me or the guitarist could really see what were doing! I though I'd take a break and turn around and have a jam with the drummer, and the back truss lighting then came on a blinded me again!!! All part of the fun I suppose!!
11. Need a new power supply and a tuner type bump, big muff and bass balls are still available! Open to trades if any one has either!
12. To be really honest, I don't think you will go wrong with any if the gear you have mentioned. I have GK neo cabs and they are great, just be VERY carefull with the crossover on the back as the horns are very delicate, and the only GK distributor told me it would be an 8 week wait for a replacement. Other than that, they are loud, clean and amazingly portable (I fit my 212 and 115 side by side in the boot of my Mondeo hatch without having to adjust the seat, just take the parcel shelf out). The markbass little mark stuff is fairly transparent so if you want any colour it may not be for you. I have a GKMB200 as my backup to my rb100ii and am amazed how nice it sounds and how loud it can go. The fusion versions will give a little warmth, but all of them still have that classic GK tone. Bang for buck, I don't think you can go past it
13. Anyone needing an ego boost can come and check out smells like Seattle playing glaston bury on Monday!!!! As I've only started gigging this year I'm surprised how little notice the test of the world takes of us bass players!!
14. Great feedback guys. And yes cameltoe you are correct it is Eb not Bb lol.... Feeling rather silly now! But it was the Eb that lead down the Gminor as a opposed to Gmajor
15. The chorus start on a Bb unless I am mistaken, hence why I am leaning toward minor, but there are notes played that don't fit either scale.... Or I am missing the point completely!
16. Hey all, sorry to lure you here under false pretences, but my question is actually related to Rob DeLeo and a couple his songs I am trying To make sense of. But since he openly admits to rehashing jamerson, I figure the two are somewhat interchangeable in this instance as it applies to the way they create their bass lines. I am trying to understand theory and how to create my own lines by looking I to how these two songs (plush and interstate love song) are written in relation to the appropriate scale. Plush is in G minor and interstate is E major (I think) yet studying the bass lines I am finding a lot that are outside the scale. I understand the concept of passing notes, but some of the notes appear to be played at the same time as a chord, so do I have the key wrong? How far "out" can you play and get away with it??? If someone could assist if be very greatlfull! One very confuzzed little bass player!
17. I have just got a 4lx, but it has an emg pre. Hankering for a trim tonepump though!
18. Gorgeous bass pal, are they emg's or tesla pickups? Is a trim or non trim pre? Just askin... Have a bump
19. Hey all, had my first rehearsal with my new toy, and it is bloody amazing. It's a spector euro 4LXEX, basically a neck trough p/j with a spalted maple top and it plays and sounds amazing. The previous owner has installed an EMG 3 band eq, which I'm not entirely sold on, but this is a very small issue easily fixed with a tonepump. Otherwise I cannot fault it at all. One very happy bass players here!!!
20. Just bought a spector euro from Dave and couldn't be happier. He was Incredibly patient while I waited for the sale of my bass to go through. Great bloke to deal with. Thanks again Dave!
21. All of them! BUT, if I had to, russel crowe's thirty odd foot of grunts would be the first to go! (Not sure what I was thinking there...)
22.
Just an update a few months down the line, thought I'd do that as it was good in the first place to bounce off folk. I did spit the dummy, but with gigs booked I never really went away. With about 15 in the diary for BBGM for next year already, it became more obvious Troyen was going to be run concurrently, but the band I was in was going to be the bread and butter band. As time has gone on, the originals band that I was spitting about has now got 3 festivals for next year. They also have a Scottish Fest as a possibilty and also ones in Belgium and Holland. They have been asked to write 2 new numbers for a compilation CD, NWOBHM 30 years on. Their original bassist has told them he can not commit the time required. I was asked to join on Saturday night at our gig. They announced it on their Facebook page today. So basically, I am an embarrassed tart/brat. But a happy one . Thanks to all of you in my hour of bratish-ness. EDIT. Last night a second label asked them for some material for a compilation album.
Apparently I need to adjust my style of parenting with my kids, it seems throwing your toys out of the pram and stomping your feet DOES get you what you want!! :-) Seriously though Karl, I don't think that anyone felt you were too far out of order. We have our own feelings and are entitled to them whether or not they seem reasonable to others. Really pleased that in the end you not only got to hang on to the band you were clearly enjoying but also you now get to create some original music and play some nice big shows. Well done mate!
23.
Great little amps and they have a nicer sound than the 1001RBi amp i have. Extremely portable and just amazing wee thing. Good luck with the sale. Dave
Yep, I think I agree (main amp is 1001rbii) just not quite the same punch, but that's to be expected given the size and power difference!
24. These are amazing, I actually gigged with mine as my main amp was being repaired. My Drummer is loud, and guitar went through the PA, I actually had to turn down! GLWTS
