Is there anyone in the northwest who has either a 4 or 5 that wouldn't mind me trying it out? Will happily bring a coffee/6 pack along? The nearest spector dealer is in Warwickshire so would like to try one.

anyone used guitarstoreonline? or GAK
Damonjames replied to hollywoodrox's topic in General Discussion
Hey all, just thought I would post to give an update. Mark contacted me again this morning and again apologised for the poor communication. I had suspected that it may have been the case, but the person I was dealing with had been on leave during the whole process, which at least to some degree explains the situation. My amp should have been back in the store today, so should have it back in the next couple of days, and has offered some strings by way of an apology which was above and beyond. I will amend my original post to see this one, but I would happily try them again for my next purchase. Thumbs up again for GAK! It's not just the Initial service that counts, but more importantly the after sales support that counts in my book. -

That's something I hadn't factored in was the scale length, I'm a 34" only kind of guy. Cheers for all the help!!

Thank for the replies, it's more to do with the neck thickness (as in between the thumb and fingers that bother me I have learned. I really love the playability of the ray 5!

Have you played a music nan stingray 5 Cosmo? How does it compare to the spector??

With jazz basses, it all comes down to pickup choice. I agree Mexican jazz basses to me sound quite thin and brittle and uninspiring. I installed dimarzio dp123 jazz pickups in mine and it's a beast. They are humbucking dual coils, and are quite hot, the bridge pickup could almost compete with my quarter pounder p alone
I found the PJ 4 string to be growlier than the 5 with soapbars. Both still unmistakeably Spector, and the fiver still had gobfuls of aggression.
That's what I was worried about! Also read some comments about the neck being on the chunkier side on the 5 than the 4, both would be reasons to stay with the 4!!

I have a schector model T and it is amazing. I would have no hesitation in recommend them as manufacturer, just really depends if you want a jazz I guess!
Often used GAK and they have been very good to great every single time. Wouldn't hestitate to give them a call. A mate of mine recently did nearly a 1000 pub food covers in a bank hol weekend... He has 3 complaints and guess what...they ALL ended up on trip advisor. First thing anyone should do, is contact the business and let them sort it, or not. After that, the internet recourse might be fair game. But also... post your good reviews as quickly as you post the bad ones...
I agree totally, and I think I may have left positive feedback in another thread regarding GAK and their customer service prior to my amp having problems. In the interest of transparency I felt leaving an honest (and I think fair and non accusatory) account was appropriate. To Mark, I would give massive thumbs up for having the courage to front up on behalf of your business, I will email the details shortly. -

If you had asked me a month ago I would have given a massive thumbs up for GAK, but sadly I am a little indifferent now. The sale was easy and I got a good price and swift delivery no probs. But my bass head failed at a recent gig which meant returning for warranty, and that's when my experience has tainted. Firstly they cocked up the pickup date, leaving my wife stuck at home with the two screaming kids for a full day with no one showing. Finally Mande arrangement to pick it up which was no problem, but no confirmation from the store to say it had arrived and been dispatched. I the. Knowing I would be without an amp for a few weeks, I contacted them to see if they could do a better price than advertised on one of the same brand's smaller heads to which I got no response (I thought a. Opportunity to sell another amp would have got at least some response) and here we are 3 weeks later and still no amp. While I appreciate that they are at the mercy of the manufacturer for the repair, but can't help by feel a little let down by the service and lack of communication. I'll let you know how this all ends!! Please read my new post, issue resolved and would happily use GAK again. -
Hey guys n gals just after some opinions off those Of you who have owned or played both. I am mostly interested in the tone difference between the P/J config of the 4 vs the soapbars on the 5, are they close enough to call the same or are they a completely different beast? I am assuming they both run the tone pump pre??

I can't tell you the exact amount, but from memory it was about 3mm, evenly taken off the length of the neck. The profile still feel pretty much like a Modern C profile, but it's maybe just a little flatter. It plays and feels like it was always meant to be that way, excepting the fact that it is waxed, not gloss finish. As I said before, it feels a fairly close thickness/profile to a new American standard p neck which is what I think Steve used as a reference. He was concerned about taking too much off in case he uncovered a truss rod!!! Dunc, how would you say it compares in feel to your old precision, because when I had a quick play, to my hands it didn't feel worlds apart???

I am the afore mentioned small handed former owner of this bass and can vouch that it is brilliant. I agonised on the trip home whether I had made a mistake in trading it, but after playing the model t, I know that I would never have come to terms with the neck. Even after having it thinned it was still too big for me. If you are concerned it is too thin, my other bass is a jazz, and the dirnt was still too thick, it's closer to a standard precision now. I can also vouch that Dunc is a great guy to deal with!

There are a number of factors at play here, in no particular order 1 people have less disposable income at the moment 2 the recent drop in some pieces of gear (digitech bass synth wah £30 brand new from GAK, 6 months ago they were that Much for a good used one and some sellers still holding on for what they paid) then having to drop the price to sell Instead of being realistic to start with 3 the weakened £ over the last few years combined with corporations need to make profit in tough times, factory price goes up then bought with a weaker £ means the brand new In store cost is higher which inflates the second hand market 4 the luck of the cycle, I would hate to be trying to sell a musicman on here at the moment, there are tons of them! A couple of months back it was fender everywhere. Same with amps, 18 months ago markbass was all the rage, now there are others about like genz offering as good at lower price. It's all about supply and demand. 5 Brand perception plays a big factor, fender is one of the few brands that consistently moves on here IF it is priced right, but anything slightly odd or modded too much won't, it's wierd. Warwick is a 50/50 but other mid to high spec gear like spector and fernandes could take a lifetime to shift if you don't want to drop you pants. Personally though, it think the biggest issue is the number of new instruments being made, it has to be having a detrimental effect on the second hand market through competition. Dan Larkin for example (the guy who founded lakland then Sold to ESP) has started another bass company taking Joe Osbourne and Bob Glaub with him. Guess what, he is pretty much making exactly the same basses he was before, so now there are even more of them. As we all know Leo Fender did the same thing, twice! It's surely not sustainable in the long run, is it??

Hey banditsid, that sounds like a great idea, are you using the standard gk 4 wire to feed the first Cab?
