Hey mate, what pickup is in this? I have one if the original mike dirnt p basses, this looks Like a massive improvement. The neck on mine was ridiculous so I had it shaved down, and the pickup had a very low output, but did sound really nice. Mine now sports a Quarter pounder P and a jazz bridge instead. Would love to try one of these new ones though!

To fretless or not to fretless, that is the question!

To fretless or not to fretless, that is the question!
Damonjames replied to Damonjames's topic in Bass Guitars
Our band is called smells like Seattle, we do a grunge tribute, and I know some of the tracks would sound pretty nice on fretless, like black by pearl jam and interstate love song by stone temple pilots. We are also talking about putting an "unplugged" version of our set together for more chilled out clubs etc as some of the most iconic mtv unplugged records were by those artists. I figure a fretless would fit the acoustic side also really well. -
Hey guys, while in my local shop I have fallen for another temptress... All the hype about pino playing with NIN got me thinking about getting a fretless, and as fate being as cruel as she is, has placed a fretless stingray 5 in my local. Now I don't sway easy in shops, most of the stuff I can take or leave, but this had me showing the physical symptoms of full blown GAS like never before. So before I put this beauty on finance, I thought I'd ask, how much use do you get out of your fretless? I know I will use it at home for some stuff, and possible one or two songs in my current band, but is it really worth having one? Or should I let her slip away? Any advice would be great!

Smart choice to move on the Karl, hope it's not too prickly for you in the meantime!
-
Hey Karl, I'm really sorry you felt that was your only option, but at the end of the day you have to live with yourself, not anyone else. Good on you for having the nuts to make the decision to leave now rather than drag it out. Just enjoy the time you have left with them and find something else. What was their response by the way?
I've kinda been in the situation where members of my band played in other bands, and I know loads of people do it but it caused enough sh*t for me to hand my notice in, Karl knows a little bit of this tale. The day was saved and I mostly got my way and stayed. I suppose it comes down to being clear from the start what you can and can't commit to, but I'm now at the stage were I won't wear it anymore. If you want to do the odd midweek gig then fine, if you want to clash with my band then no, it's just not happening. It's not just the gigging it's the time commitments that clash with every day life and family. Not being able to rehearse cos' your already rehearsing with your sideline band for a Thursday night gig and are out on Saturday with us and the wife will go ape if you do another rehearsal will be met with a very frosty reception. We all only have so much time and energy to commit to our weekend warrior bands and if you've only got limited time and energy then I want it all.
Well said Les. I think this is my view point on being in a band, with regards to the other members and my time and energy. At least until recently, I have started to consider another project as well. Although I will start with the best of intentions, and it wouldn't be so much the clashing between bands, more that two bands will clash with the rest of life and it's THAT that will cause the friction. Think I'll rethink the second project, at least for now...
Aha, little bit of research and I'm sure I could "sniff" you out from NWB. I'll have to Seattle for watching bands perhaps
Haha, nice detective work!!

Will have to watch what I say Karl, you are just around the corner!!!

Voluntary ban on myself in the Basses for sale section...
Damonjames replied to Highfox's topic in General Discussion
I'm I a really nice place at the moment, I love my amp and it More than serves my needs, my pedal board is almost full, and I'm not listing after anything in particular. I am enjoying my current stable of basses too, but there is ALWAYS something... Right now it's a fretless 5 stingray, and a fernandes gravity 5, and and active fender jazz And.... Fortunately right now I can live without anything new, and almost comfortably, but I'm sure it won't be long until I HAVE to have something... Why do we do it? -
Sounds like a good old fashioned truth session is required then!! Sounds like your intentions are sound bud, and I'm sure the others are with regards to your band, just have a chat and crack on, hopefully you can get passed it.

One thing is almost certain Karl, this won't be the only band situation to nark you! And just to be clear, I never said that your feelings weren't justified, just I personally don't get it. Having been burned in similar fashion and lived on, maybe I'm just less sensitive about it. My post at that time probably read similarly to yours my friend!! I do hope you can move on one way or another, if they havnt sacked you, it's probably down to the fact that they like you and your playing ability (hopefully not just your ability to move a PA) so take some comfort in that. Were they a touch insensitive with what they did? Hell's yes, but don't let it eat you up and ruin the music for you. Maybe it's time you all took a break and let them Crack on with this other thing for a bit? If it's still worth doing, you will all want to come back. Good luck mate whichever way you go!

I'm a late comer to this, but Karl, I struggle to relate to why you are so annoyed about this other band. Granted, they could have approached you and spoken before it went on FB but that's just how the world is now. I've been sacked from a band I had been working on for a year by text message! Personally, I'd be more pissed these other two clowns have just let you do all the pa monkey work without offering to help, nothing kills fun quicker than resentment. Have a good old fashioned truth session with your band, IF all of you are brave to enough listen to what comes out without throwing punches, it's not everyone's cup of tea!

I have fitted mine with a gotoh 201 and dimarzio dp123's and it sounds huge, and VERY hot for a passive. I am running a gk 1001rbii and with my stingray it used to clip very easily, as well as my Jazz at the same levels. I just run it with the pad on and problem solved. I couldn't stand the thin sound of the stock pickups and nearly sold the bass as a result! Swapped some parts and love it now, so go for it, You can always swap back if you don't like it. Only advice with adding a high mass bridge ole a gotoh or badass, you will need to pack the neck a couple of mm to account for the the thickness of the new bridge, but not a big problem. Good luck!

Last night I played our bands second gig, we are smells like Seattle a grunge tribute band. We played whittles in Oldham, and it was a great night! Can't wait to get out and do it again, fortunately it's later this month. As this is my first band, I am slowly getting used to the anonymity of being a bass player, it's wierd seeing people talk to everyone else then walk right by!!

Are there any high school music teachers out there?
Damonjames replied to Damonjames's topic in General Discussion
Hi guys, thanks for the response. Apologies For the "high school" bit, I'm from Australia so we can call it both, but being Aussie we tend to go with the shortest option! Would you mind if I PM you and pick your brains? -
Hi all, just wondering if any of us are high school music teachers, or perhaps may know someone who is? I am considering a career change and could use some advice on the best and most practical way to do it for a "mature age" (hahahahaha me mature!) student. Thanks guys n gals

Thanks for the post! I have NIN downward spiral (somewhere) and there a moment on that album are incredible, others not so much IMO. Sort of fell away from them and This Song in particular reminds me of what I really love about them. I have to admit (ducking for cover) that I knew of Pino and the respect he gets on these pages, but never really studies his stuff. Holy bat crap! I've been missing out spectacularly!! I love his groove on sanctified, and now I want a fretless... Made the mistake of going into my local music shop to see a second hand stingray 5 fretless staring me down. Havnt been able to stop watching this clip though

From reading his book, duff and axl are still friends, albeit not as close as they used to be. Who wouldn't help a mate out in a bind?? I think all of us GnR fans would love to see the full line up, but it's not likely to happen, especially since they have gone on to have successful careers individually out side of guns, but we can dream!

The orange TB won't get you the tone you seek. I had one, and it was scarily loud (it was the 1000 watt) but the tone didn't do a lot for me. If you have 500 quid and want ampeg tone, I'd say a used GK 1001 rb ii (approx 250) GK neo 212 (about the same) then get a sansamp BBDI. Loud, portable and as close to an ampeg as you will get without one.

The answer would vary depending on where my inspiration is at the time. Right now though, it would be Robert DeLeo
