1. I did see those, much were the panel Mount speakons?
2. Hey guys, wondered if someone might be able to advise me on this. my current rig is a 1001rbii into a neo 212 and 115 which sounds huge. After my amp played up at my last gig, I am purchasing MB200 as a backup, but want to run both cabs, but it only has a single output. Here's the question, if I get a 2 pole speakon splitter that has a male In and two females on the other end, can I just plug the two gk 4 wire speakons into this and switch the passive crossover on the cabs to full range mode? Or do I need something more elaborate? Cheers!
3. This really tickled me. Won't spoil it for anyone but it was a very clever ending! Great sports and it's nice to see a celeb embrace someone imitating them.
4. After learning the hard way at a gig recently, I would say always carry spares. Forget whether you are getting paid, cos into case it was a charity gig, but nothing is as embarrassing as standing there without making any noise! Fortunately for me I normally run 3 basses for quick change over for tunings (we have 5 different tunings in our set) but am about to buy a backup amp as that was what let me down. It won't be as powerfull as my main amp, but will make a racket at least
5. Pm sent
6. Surely as a community we could produce some to share amongst ourselves? I am in a similar situation where I COULD do it, but don't have the time. Maybe it could be a way to raise some much needed funds for this site? For a small fee you could have access, and contributors could get free access to classifieds??? Just saying... If anyone feels generous enough to share some with me they could PM me :-)
7. From my albeit limited knowledge, the single pickup version was cliffs preferred bass, but isn't the sb1000 an active bass? Pretty sure he trialled them and sent them back because he didn't like the sound. As for the pickups failing, it does appear to happen more than you would expect with this particular model, so be carefull. I would also be wary of any claims of a replacement pickup being an exact replacement. Good luck with the search! And if have seen one for in the region of £450 not that long ago, I got pipped on it, so I keep harassing the person who got it to sell it on!
8. The bongo is a funny beast for me, I don't like the look, but I can't look away! That finish combo is quite amazing really, there is one for sale on Facebook that is a bright orange and it just looks stunning. How do they sound to a stingray? I am assuming that they sound quite similar but have a little mire tonal variety due to extra controls?
9. Ok , so I've just quickly viewed a couple more of her vids and there may be some truth I what you say ste, I'd not seen the toto cover...
10.
This. Usually even if they are wrong or badly played you can get a handle on something just by watching the playing position. Increasingly my ears are not so good so any help I can get is great.
+10000000 These videos CAN be a very useful tool to learning. I can learn by ear, but quite often it takes a while to pick it out of re mix and with juggling work, family and band it can be a bit too time consuming. With a play along, it can save me hours of practice.
11. To the OP, have you tried to audition for a band lately? A lot of bands won't even let you through the door for an audition without hearing some sort of recording these days, and when it is so easy and cheap for people to do, why not? Anyone serious about there playing and trying to get out playing in quality bands should want to promote themselves. I am considering doing a bunch of videos for youtube myself for this very reason, although I did agonise of the the perception of me being an egotistical w%#!er. If used in the right spirit how can it be though. You showed one of Marta's clips, and I struggle to see how you can describe her as altruistic or egotistical, it's just a talented young woman performing in front of a camera, trying to promote her playing. Most of the time she almost Seems embarrassed to be in front of the camera! It seems to be working for her, her videos get a lot of views, the fact that she is also quite attractive I'm sure has nothing to do with it!!!
12. To the OP, it may bbe worth mentioning to your son the simple life lesson that anything that is WORTH doing will be difficult and he should be patient and stick with it. But if like Most young men, myself included he will pay No attention to his old man because you don't know ANYTHING! My advice would be rather than be insulted by his ignorant comment, embrace it as a chance to hang out and teach him something. There are far worse bass players to copy than cliff Williams! He isn't flashy, but he is rock solid and bang on with his timing which will teach him some valuable lessons about how a band should work. He may then decide to learn more and retract his statement about bass being easy, or he may then find with some strength and coordindatio. In his hands that he wants to try guitar again. Either way, I will be stoked if either of my two kids decide to play at some point, and if I do t approve of the type of music he is in to, I will do what all parent a do and fake enthusiasm for it, sure if you son is old enough to play, you have mastered this skill?? As to the comments about metal being rubbish... Ignorance must be bliss!
13. The question you have to ask is this. If your band situation was to change and your requirements sonically also change, are you confident you could get similar basses back easily that you would be just as happy with? If you don't HAVE to sell, then I wouldn't. They are just lumps of wood, they won't get upset if you leave them locked away for years on end or get jealous if you play another one... If you think they are replaceable however, ditch them and as you say invest in one other high end bass.
14. Thanks for the perspective Wayne, things could always be worse! Quick update, a coupe of pints and a nights sleep have seen it almost forgotten, I just can't understand what the hell went wrong. The bass in question Is a passive fender jazz with dimarzio pickups, and wanted to check it as soon as I got in, it ran ok on my practice amp. So right now I have no clue what the issue is!
15. I'll start with an apology to anyone who just saw me play at G festival in Worsely this evening, it wasn't one of my better performances. This was my first festival and was really looking forward to it, but as we were second last on the big stage, the whole thing was running behind so no time for sound check just straight into it. I had setup, had a quick check of my pedal volumes at low level then done a quick check at normal volume and everything seemed fine, until we started..... As soon as we kicked off (i think) I got about 2 bars in with some cracks and pops and then that horrible deafening silence..... Followed by panick! As I have a almost brand new GK Head, I assume it's just a button wrongly pressed so check the tune mute/pad, still nothing, try turning up and get a faint sound. There were no monitors on my side so couldn't even tell if there was anything coming through the PA, so try plugging directly into the amp assuming it's something on the pedal board but even that was no good. I then thought it may have been the DI lead causing a wierd ground lift so pulled that with no results. I was trying to keep playing in the midst of all this mayhem and terror with a tiny whisper coming out of my rig, growing more and more frustrated. Three songs in, with a last ditched attempt , I grabbed by other bass, and pow back in it came like there was never a problem, so until I can get I my room tomorrow and have a look at my Bass I have no clue what has happened. My jazz has never so much as crackled in the 2 years I have been playing it as my main bass. The most annoying part is I was playing that hard to try and get the output up, my hands were fatiguing badly for the remaining 4 songs, so my playing was AWEFULL!!!!! I just wanted to crawl under a rock and hide, but unfortunately no such luck, in front of hundreds of people I put in an absolutely shameful performance. I guess I just put this down to experience but right now I'm feeling like I have let the band down, and embarrassed myself in front of a big crowd, feeling pretty low right, but I guess as they say the show goes on....
16. I would love to see the science behind this. I'm an electrician, and I can get that these leads "could" make a difference to the current supply but tbh I didn't read all the specs. The power cables in the building in 99% of situations (in aus at least) are rated at 20 amps and are 2.5 mm squared cable for both active and neutral. Given the vast majority of amp or extension leads are 0.75mm squared, there is a big difference in cross sectional area when you start working out the resistance of the circuit on the active AND neutral. If you factor in the material used if it could be lower resistance than your average copper, and reduced the inductance/capacitance of the wire as well then the physics does point to a drastic difference. As to whether or not you could A/B it with a normal one who knows. All I know is that my lava tightrope patch lead kit made a massive difference to the standard lead cable/neutrik setup I ran before in regards to tone suck. When I say massive I mean MASSIVE!
17. If you think you need one then you definitely do. If you know what they sound like as a general rule and are happy with that then go for it. They Tend to be a bit of a one trick pony, but hey, it's a hell of a trick they do! You can get some very different sounds out of it though, Bernard Edwards is the best example of how a personal technique and very dead strings can change the sound of a bass. All the above is very true. Try one and see. If you are on a budget though. I'd go after a US SUB 5, it's what I have and love it to pieces. Its a great bass for the money and there is a 4 string up for sale right now if you are interested. I love the 2band eq on the sub, it looks and sound more like a 5 string ray, whereas the sr5 has a different body, pickup selector switch and 3 band eq. Me personally Im working on getting both, and a fretless but it might take sometime. The trouble is you need to the right band for a ray, I only use mine on some alice in chains stuff which was originally done on a spector, the rest of our set is do e on passive fenders :-(
18. So how did it go???
19. Hey guys, just a couple of questions as I havnt played a spector before. Has anyone tried an NS2a? It's made by the Kramer factory in Korea in the 80's/90's and apparently are quite good but with slightly different preamp to the us versions. Also does anyone know a store in the NW that has an NS or euro I could try out? I have just recently discovered the best way to cure gas is by actually trying it out!
20. I went to LA in the 2001, and I remember telling everyone back home that if I had to spend a drug and alcohol fuelled 4 day bender then this would be the place. It has a strange and very hollow feel To it, almost like you can feel the broken dreams as you walk the streets. I stayed in a hostel a couple of streets off the strip not far from the greyhound station, and can honestly say I never felt unsafe, but was always wary as any traveller should be. I would definitely make sure you know where NOT to go though, avoiding east LA and South Central are obvious enough. The strip is pretty lively and don't regret my time there, however I'm in no rush to go back! Check out Venice beach too, it's a short bus ride out and is very cool especially if you like the doors! Sand Diego is like LA's sensible brother, there is not a lot to do to be fair, and as already stated SF was a town I really enjoyed. Have a blast mate!
21.
If you are already a Stingray player, then get it and keep it - even if you only ever noodle with it at home it will pay you back in spades. If you are not already a Stingray player then it might be a good idea to follow advice already offered in this thread and get something cheaper as a tryout. There is a problem with the tryout strategy, though - if you don't get on with it then it might not be so easy to tell whether the fretlessness is the problem or whether you simply don't get on with that kind of bass. For that reason it would be good to choose something that you are already familiar with, e.g. if you are au fait with Jazz basses then get a cheapie fretless jazz. But whatever you decide to do with your money, you should definitely give fretless a go, for all the reasons stated above.
This is the reason I am considering the ray. I have three basses at the moment and would actually prefer to streamline things. I have a US SUB 5 which is rapidly becoming my favourite bass, but my passive fenders suit the majority of what I do in my band. Ideally I would change my Mike dirt p/j for a fender jazz with a p neck pickup, that way I keep the sound but get the feel of the jazz that I prefer. Alas I can't get rid of it regardless of how hard I try!
22. Highly recommended. As is simon as a teacher, anyone in the northwest looking for tuition need look no further!
23. If you do, see if he will do is a deal! I am thinking of changing mine, I'm actually Beginning to love the textured paint bu can't get past the chequer plate scratch playe
