1. Less online interacting and more practicing. (ie facebook- not really basschat as there's plenty of tips and tricks on here to inspire me) Im getting a double bass in the coming weeks so maybe some sort of music-practice thing. Ive never really got to grips with a practice schedule. Actually complete a recording- lots of sketches but nothing framed! lose a load of pounds so as to get gig fit and have to worry about things like buckle rash (hasnt been a problem since I grew a few bellies)
2. just a suggestion but maybe stick a black pick or different pick guard on it, I was never happy with the colour on mine until I changed that.
3. they had a couple of these in denmark street last time i was there- the shop that's selling that old p bass as owned by sid vicious and the bar that plays 50s music downstairs
4. cheers for all the advice. I went to see it today and had a bit of a noodle. It's the first time Ive ever played one and really enjoyed it. I'd say its all laminate as it wasn't really really loud although that may have been something to do with my technique! the guy who is selling it bought it in april for £450 new so there isn't a mark on it. He's giving me the bow as well although I didnt really look at it. He's selling it as he's off to japan for a year or two. the colour is a bit red/gaudy looking so I'm hoping this is something that may age a bit? Im thinking it'll be ideal to start with and if I catch the bug or it doesn't work out I cant see me losing any money on it.
5. cheers jake for the reply. He paid around 450 for it new plus the cost of the soft case. I think the pick up was around 150 to 200. Im going to see it so will find out exactly what it is and maybe take a few pics. I figured for that price it should be worth a punt providing its all okay. Just clicked on your sig myspace site. Yamit Mamo- helluva voice. We've filmed a bit with her in work on doctor who confidential
6. hey guys, a friend has offered to sell me a double bass for £250 in a soft case plus a pickup for £100. I havent seen it yet so will be having a look in the next few days. all I know about it is that its chinese. Are there any issues I should look out for, the fact that its chinese?I guess most low priced instruments made these days are chinese but it still makes me a little worried. Ive been reading some of the other threads here mentioning the sound post and checking to see if there are any splits but is there anything else that can be a concern?
7. Im intrigued to know what they are like as well. Ive seen the baritone jaguars around which look quite similar but havent had a chance to play one. saw one of these on ebay the other day. A tribute to Jack Bruce's VI http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TPP-JACK-BRUCE-Cream...=item4cec7c71f5
8. use the old finger method but then also use my index finger and thumb together as pick when needed if that makes sense. this used to cause havoc with my nails when I was gigging all the time.
9. Tis gorgeous... The journey to getting this bass has been most enjoyable for me as a reader as well. More pics will only make this thread even better!
10. +1 for photobucket. Im hoping you're uploading pics of a pretty tasty '64 precision?
11. I thought it was one of those spoof you tube vids where someone had dubbed some awful playing on top of it... no sir, I dont like it!
12.
Fair enough.... but the body shape too?
classic, timeless shape thats comfortable to play. Thats why I got my mex Jazz back in 2000. Cant say I'd buy one of those expensive ones though
13. Ive seen this vid a few times, Ive seen bands use it as visuals and looped it as well to great effect, makes me want an upright even more!
14. Always been very happy with the female sound engineers... One thing Ive noticed is that with every female engineer Ive encountered Ive never met one who seems jaded or really cynical about the whole live music thing... male ones on the other hand!
15. super furry animals and grandaddy, Port Talbot '98. bit of a late bloomer at 15/16 for gigs because no bugger would play down my neck of the woods!
16. I was going to ask the same question. Ive got a whammy xp collecting dust somewhere and lost the power supply ages ago. my line 6 power supply works with it though
17. arrgh missed out on that one which is probably a good thing considering Im in the middle of buying a house ... beautiful
18. here's an old pic of my fave guitar, must be about 6 years old now as I havent lived at home for nearly 5. its my ole US 62RI jazzmaster, a jap Jaguar (with weird modded electrics that was swapped for a tokai 335 copy) and my trusty old mex Jazz which is still my number 1 bass. eagle eyed peeps may also see an Ibanez overdrive 2 pedal from '72ish bought for a pound and also a '00' gauge trainboard that my dad has forever been sorting out.
19. oh dear... if its true, tis a very sorry state of affairs- apologies if its been posted before. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/nov/2...-guitars-raided does make you think though, how many of our basses have been made using ethically sourced materials and is this ever a consideration when you buy a new bass?
20. I almost bought one of the american traditional basses back in 2000. it was brand new in the shop, not sure how long it had been there. I was told by the shop owner it was essentially mexican parts put together in America. not sure how true this is though, bought a mim jazz instead which is still my number one EDIT Oh yeah, it was the same price as mexican one back then. I think I paid 320 or 339?
21. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1969-Gibson-EB-2D-Ba...=item2c515c2a99 Anyone seen this? looks beautiful- seems pretty cheap for what it is.
