1. There are plenty of owners on offsetguitars.com. I've been wanting one for a while and a grand for a jap one seems about the going rate these days. I've been umming and ahhing over one of these for the last 6 months as a cheaper alternative http://www.rondomusic.com/arguslpb.html
2. a hard to think about, I love the trainspotting one for born slippy. but I guess the one I listen to most is the big lebowski one, just for the kenny rogers track
3. I really look forward to more updates. I really want an bass vi but cant justify the money and haven't the skills or tools. have you heard of http://www.offsetguitars.com forum? there's plenty of useful info on building a bass vi on there and people are often selling the various bits on there also.
4. member 321! your spam boat is up, and I'd reccomend some wizards for those slam dunks. back on to the thread, good luck with the project. I'd love to do the course, I wonder how much it would cost or indeed if it was possible to do something like a bass vi?
5. I've got an old Boss 4 track which has a stereo phono out on it, I just plug that into the mic port. Works great for what I do
6. The reason I started listening to them was through the super furry animals where they sampled just one line from showbiz kids and created a new song. (the man don't give a f***) I like how every studio I've been in the producers/engineers are always big steely dan fans. one studio even had a painting of them on the wall.
7. beautiful bass, alas I was born in 81. I'm guessing the equivalent bass for me would weigh twice that and look nowhere near as nice
8. does one of the pumpkins 33 singles have a picture of lenin on the cover? looking for that version as I've lost an inlay doh!
9. I'm so out of the loop of mainstream radio and tv music. I was in my sisters car the other day and heard what I thought was the beatles with blackbird. Thought it was a trifle strange hearing the beatles on commercial radio. a few seconds later I realise its not them, turns out it was gary barlow and robbie williams. I'm not a fan of u2 but love that line in the fly, Every artist is a cannibal. Every poet is a thief. probably true
10. just watched the show. Cyndi Lauper's neck looks like one of those slinky spring things. I don't normally comment on people's appearance but it was so bloody distracting. I honestly cant remember a word she said or anything she sung
11. maybe its a case if wooten played less notes maybe he'd make some money? maybe writing a hit song may help as well.
12.
Hawkwind, circa 1975.
that would have been fun! I think around bands around the 67 era would have been great, Incredible string band, Love etc. Or in a krautrock band, Can, Neu! or Faust at their peaks
13. my word, I've just seen the new headstocks! yuck! the next time I have a few quid spare I intend getting one of their Bass VI copies!
14. Hi guys, I've been doing some work over the past few weeks for a few events with the national orchestra of wales. today, I noticed a lot of the basses have what I can only describe as a clamped on piece to the headstock which extends the e string? Can anyone explain? When I saw it on one I assumed it was a very old bass and the neck/headstock needed help but then I noticed all of them had the same kind of device attached. google has come up with nothing!
15. I used to beat the living hell out of my bass when I was gigging. I don't think there was a gig when I didn't chuck it on the floor. I dont know what they paint mexican fenders with but there is hardly a mark on it. the only time i did any real damage was when my warwick soft case zip gave in and it smashed the strap button off and scuffed it up at the bottom. 'And you will know us by the trail of dead' were notorious for trashing their kit. I asked the drummer from mogwai if he'd ever leant them stuff on tour- he did but it didnt stop them from trying to trash it! one of their album dvd extras shows their tour manager pleading with them to not do any more damage as they couldn't afford to go on, alas they carried on the same. saw them at reading a few times, the last time was in the radio 1 tent, they trashed a load of the kit and threw all the drums and hardware and pedals into the crowd. cue the security rushing in to get it all back as it was all hired!
16. arrgh why didnt I see this! let me know if this falls through
17.
Jazzmaster (I think)
the offset pedant in me wishes to say thats a jaguar. (I sold mine, still have a jazzmaster though) You've had some beautiful guitars sir!
18. I've always wanted an EB2. I got into a bit of a bidding war for a 60's rivoli a few years back on ebay but pulled out as the price seemed to be getting a bit crazy. alas it would probably be considered cheap these days. The rivoli reissues pop up now and again on ebay,I can't say I've ever seen and eb2 or rivoli for sale on this site though. I did consider the jack cassidy bass but it's something about the lower horn on it which i dont like. I'd love to try one of the warwick star basses out
19. I bought a cheap one off ebay a few years ago. chinese made and new for about 70 quid (think it was godman branded). I put up a review a few years back on the old bassworld site. sounded fine for just practice, not the nicest thing I've played, too twangy for my tastes but never plugged it in really. I did have fun with the harmonics on it. I bought one so that I would practice more... cant say I did anymore on it and kept going back to my electric- for the money it was a good buy but alas I sold it on as it was taking up too much space. I tried out an epiphone el capitan a couple of years ago- that was very nice although I have a feeling its a different model to the current ones
20. Very intriguing! I'd love to have a go. I've had a little project where I've been intending to finish a little collection of songs into an EP which I was going to call the People's Key-P. Essentially all the songs are in the key of E played on a guitar tuned EBEEBE. Perhaps a bass with 4 E strings would be the catalyst to finish it! Going to check out the buffalo springfield book, still haven't finished the krautrock book I've been reading since christmas though
21.
Francis Hylton plays an AtelierZ...
I saw him play with the imagined village and wondered what the bass was
22. bought my mex jazz in 2000 for £310 My old SWR rig which I've sold came in at around £500 double bass @£250 laney combo that was bought in a job lot of gear (6 grand of kit for £1200)
23. cheers for the replies people!
Would rather have this http://www.rondomusic.com/argustoaskbk.html Much more like a VI with the whammy bar. Plus they seem to get a lot of great reviews.
yeah I've seen them and have been close to buying one it's just I wish there was a british seller so I could try one out!
I've 'acquired' an old Strat copy that I'm in the process of building a 30" scale, six string bass neck for. I'll post up a build diary once I get going and if it works well I might make a few more if anyone's interested. I couldn't believe how much Bass VIs are going for these days, even the Fender Japan versions are fetching mega-bucks. Here's a link to a big list of short scale 6 strings: Bass VIs MusicMan make a six string Bass Silhouette too although I've never seen one in the flesh.
I look forward to your build threads as always!
Hi Stu - these Danos look pretty good, but I'd check one out in the flesh - the only thing that I'm not sure about is the bridge being non-adjustable for intonation, as it's a block of rosewood stuck on a tremolo arm. Might be fine though - if you get one, tell us what it's like... Cheers, B.
If it was about 80 quid cheaper I think I'd take a risk so I'm going to let this go. Here's to Mr Henry Norton with his build, maybe I can pass some money his way for one!
