Just ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Little-bear-6J1-HiFi-stereo-tube-valve-Preamp-Preamplifier-amplifier-incl-transf-/400774756507?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item5d5009789b At this price it's worth the gamble.
Be interested to hear what you think of that when it arrives.

Whats your one bass that you couldn't live without
Graham replied to birdy's topic in General Discussion
My SB-2, I was saying to our guitarist the other week about what a workhorse it is, just does anything I throw at it [Img]http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/Ghost_Upon_The_Stage/20140313_220431_zpsha0fibxy.jpg" class="ipsImage" /> -
We need a band to fill in for us on the 27th of September at The Green Man in Horsted Keynes, East Sussex - standard pub pop/rock covers, give me a shout if you're interested, cheers.

I bought my old EBS rig from Frets Music in Southampton, they used to have some good stuff, not been there for a few years though.
I started my older son at the age of 7 Bought him a Westfield junior bass and let him get on with it. He took a week to play the riff of smoke on the water. This august past he was playing double bass in a huge orchestra at the Menin gate in Belgium for the world war 1 centenary and is at college studying it now too. Who'd want to play guitar or keys with lots of strings when you can shake the earth just fine with four, or five as he is now on to. Other son is drums mad and he is only three....
Blimey, that's an age gap!

Last night was.......interesting. I arrived at half 7 to find I'm first to get there, called the singer who was driving in with the drummer, 15 minuets or so later they arrive and give me the news we have no guitarist tonight - mis-communication with the dep means he's playing somewhere else and we can't find anyone else. However, we have a plan: the singer has a number of of karoeoke versions of our songs, so if he needed to go out as a solo act he could, so we planned to put those through the PA, whack it up in the monitor and the drummer and I would play over it. It actually worked surprisingly well, as far as most punters were concerned there was live music and we had a fair few dancers for the first set, apparently it sounded great out front, really full. We had managed to get hold of one of our old guitariats who agreed to play and got there in time for the second set, so normal service was resumed - bit rusty on a couple of songs as the set-list has changed a bit since he was in the band and I've not played some of those songs for ages. All in all, despite the issues with lacking a guitarist we put on a great show, to a social club that was packed due to it being carnival night; we felt pretty triumphant at the end of the night. However, the evening was soured a little by one of the club committee having too much to drink and then ending up having a winge to the band leader about how much we charge, it's pretty simple market economics, you don't like the price we charge, don't book us, but don't book us and then have a moan about it on the night.

Not great past night, 50th birthday party at a local rugby club, horribly reverberant room with no soft surfaces at all I could see - couldn't get a good tone all night. Couple of dancers, but not a great reaction from the fairly small crowd; had a last minute dep on guitar, who we'd not met before, but a nice bloke and a really good player so that worked out alright. Tonight should be better, different dep guitarist, but we have played with him once before even if it was over a year ago, but should be a busy venue with a good atmosphere as it's carnival night in Crowborough.

Genz Benz Streamliner 900, Gallien Kruger MB Fusion 500, Markbass Little Mark Tube are all worth a look, as is the Orange.

Those modern player jazz basses...what are they like?
Graham replied to Billy Dowdall's topic in Bass Guitars
No, sadly not, just something I stumbled across on Google; it does look the business though. -
Perhaps he' realised that most basses, particularly played through a big stadium PA sound broadly the same and he's gone for the company that'll pay him to use his name [/can of worms]

One band, at one time? Easy, Metallica post-Justice, pre-Black Album. That footage of them on the Shattered Justice tour from Live sh*t Binge And Purge is just untouchable.

I'm sure it's just the lack of anything for scale, but it looks more like a toy in that photo than the Thumb in the Warwick thread

Love Story by Taylor Swift, I like to play it occasionally, it's a great exercise in restraint. http://youtu.be/8xg3vE8Ie_E

Passed this on to some mates of mine in a band called Past The Fall, hopefully they'll be doing it

Last night was The Fool 'N Angel in East Grinstead, now The Crow's Nest aren't doing bands anymore, the owners have moved some of the bands to here, odd venue I can kind of see what they're trying to do, but not sure it works: from about half 8-9 there was cabaret with a comedian comparing it, a 30's style club singer and a burlesque lass, this goes on until about 10 and then the band's in from half 10, playing until 1, with a break. Very much a gig of two halfs, first set was hard work to a mostly empty room, second set better as a hen party and a group of pretty young girls who were up for dancing turned up, which made for a much more enjoyable performance. I can't help but think the club is trying to be all things to all people, with the cabaret, band and DJ who was playing standard club songs between the acts, but doesn't really work as there's no consistency of styles. It didn't help that the comedian wasn't funny and the club singer, whilst decent had little stage presence. What really annoyed us though was the disregard the venue had for out time: load-in from 6, to be finished by half 8, but the band doesn't start until half 10 and finish at 1. Now I don't mind doing evenings like that for weddings or functions, but they pay substantially more; to give up that much time for pub money isn't on. The second set was pretty good last night, but couple the times with killer stairs for loading in and out and the poor attendance, I can't see us playing there again.

I really should have heeded Gary's advice, as the same thing happened to me last night!

Fender USA Special P/J or USA G&L SB-1? Decisions...
Graham replied to solo4652's topic in Bass Guitars
G&L MFD pickups are the best sounding out there IMO, much better than stock Fenders. -

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I'll check those suggestions out, cheers

it is fairly new, but it's so 2013 Looking for something in the charts at the moment - my kids are too young to ask what's hip, someone must have teenage children they can ask
-
Was there one? I don't listen to a lot of radio, but it would be good to get a current chart hit into the set as Happy, Get Lucky and Counting Stars are the most recent songs we do at the moment, and they're all getting ona bit now.

I too used to live in Farnham and remember there being a bit of bass stuff in there, but not much - never tried anything as it didn't tickle my fancy. Some serious guitar equipment though, top end Gibson, PRS and ESP stuff from what I remember. Staff seemed like decent chaps, always pleasant when I was buying strings or valves.

From Saturday night: http://youtu.be/5VOrJ-ELcos Not the most exciting song in the world for bass, but the only one the drummer's put up so far :-p
