1. We have a Presonus Firepod, which works brilliantly with Macbook and Logic. Haven't tried it on my XP laptop, should probably give it a go.
2. +1, I remember getting home from the pub one night, turning on Jools just in time to catch Richard Bona doing the most amazing things with voice and bass, this must have been about the time that Reverence came out. Truly inspirational. Can someone post the dates that he's playing in London? MacDaddy?
3. Given that you recently expressed concerns about being able to react to the need for a speedy upgrade to combat the recent spamming attacks, how much more difficult is it going to be if you have much more bespoke software in the platform? I think the WIKI could be better integrated but I have no interest in any of the other improvements proposed. I'm neutral about the adverts because I block them all anyway. I think there are plenty of ways for businesses to get their stuff on the web already and I'm not in favour of a subscription service.
4.
No one got a jazz.....? Chris
John at Far East Guitars has got a stunner. http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedjb2.htm
5. You're gonna hate the thin neck. It'll all end in tears ;-)
6. Harmonics! Find the harmonic halfway along the string - what would be the 12th fret. Is it on the line, or in the space? Likewise the one where the 7th and 5th frets would be. Those bendy strings might have something to do with it too.
7. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
8. I have a EA VL110 - 1x 10", 1x5" mid-range, 1 piezo tweeter. Damn good small cab, though a bit on the heavy side. CX112 is supposed to be a much better cab, so it must be something really special.
9. +1 - I'd buy this to go with the one I already have, but then I'd need to buy an amp that would run down to 2 Ohms ... Good luck with the sale.
10.
it would be quite easy to purchase those domain names and turn them into a record of disgruntled customer experiences...
If you were going to do that sort of thing, which of course we aren't, you might find that it would be better to register something like "www.thebasscellarsuckswatermelonsthroughelephants.com" - that way there's much less possibility that you'd fall foul of a domain squatting complaint. Allegedly.
11.
I had one like this. I watched my Luthier do it once. He took the neck off, with the strings still wound on They were loosened off but not right off the capstans, He just flipped it over, took the neck screws out enough to disengage the neck heel, "cocked" the neck so the adjuster was accessible at the beck of the body, tweaked it just the right amount, put it back in and tightened the screws and strings .. Took about 4 minutes ...
Wow. This is the kind of knowledge that makes basschat what it is.
12. I have a Dean B2 that I'm trying to get to grips with - along with the JJ pickups and the active EQ and the Piezo bridge, there are a huge range of tones and I'm still trying to get my head round it. But it does make some nice noises, and the Piezo is very usable on it's own without the magnetic pickups . In the top octave, it sounds almost like an acoustic guitar.
13.
It's not Fender, but the distributors who stitch up the territorial markets.
In this case, it is Fender Japan - they are leaning on all the Japanese exporters and insisting that they don't export the not-for-export Fender Japan basses which we know and love. I'm not sure how Guitar Emporium gets round it, more power to them if they can do so. Other than that, you're looking at importing a second-hand one yourself from someone like Ishibashi, who will still ship the secondhand stuff just not the new ones. http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box . Or hoping that John at Far East Guitars can find what you're looking for. You'ld probably have to ask John to find you one: I don't think he'd bring in a left-hander on spec.
14. Contrast this with the reception we got at Anderton's Music in Guildford the other day. "Good afternoon, how can I help you, what are you interested in?" We said we'd just come in for a look round as we were passing by, and were interested in guitars. "That's great come this way, here are the guitars, if you see anything you're interested in and want to try anything, give *so and so* (can't remember his name) a shout and he'll sort things out for you." One the way out, he said 'thanks for coming in'! Brilliant, why would anyone bother to go to Denmark St. Wasn't Denmark St due to disappear under 'Crossrail' or whatever it's called?
15. Colin Hodgkinson. Three times.
16. I think the Leads Factory is no longer trading - I tried to buy some connectors and when you get to the payment bit you get redirected.
17. Sorry for going off-topic, but this one is distinctly not crap. A really nice-looking Yamaha BB1000 wannabe P-bass from 1978-81. (hope the URL doesn't go mental. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-Vintage-BB100...1QQcmdZViewItem I have a BB800 from the same period and it's a cracking bass, IMHO much better than anything Fender were putting out at the time. Currently sitting at £50 which is an insult. If I didn't already have too many basses ...
18.
few in my part of East Anglia.... www.brewery-tap.com used to be a very good venue, not as good these days but still ok with big stage and in house pa/engineer and has alot of tribute bands including 'heartbreaker' a paul rodgers tribute. ipswich railway has tribute bands most fri/sat nights - though there are some tales of the management being complete gits - having said that i believe its being taken over by someone new soon.
The URL in your 'brewery tap' points to somewhere in Ireland - I've fixed it in my reply! We've heard the rumours about the Railway being up for sale, too. In the current climate, who knows. In Ipswich, you could add the Kingfisher to the list. They have a lot of tribute bands there. We've played there (though we're not a tribute band) and it was a cracking gig, loads of really appreciative punters, proper stage and an excellent sound.
19. Have to say that my modern EBS 2x12 Neo sounds a lot better with my Burman Pro 4000 than my Wem 2x15 ever did, with the added bonus that I'm not expecting it to disintegrate at the drop of a hat as soon as the volume goes past '3'. And you can pick it up with one hand.
20.
Did the dinosaurs not mind the noise?
*applause*
21.
The other week, I shipped a bass to Beefy in Leeds double-boxed in cardboard for £30 via Parcellforce 24 again, insured for £500.
Doesn't Parcelforce have an insurance limit of £150 for musical instruments? I seem to recall someone on here falling foul of that, maybe OBBM?
22.
Amp's on it's way to Dave.
Good call. Dunno if he still plays, but he used to be an awesome bass player, in the style of Colin Hodgkinson but left handed. He used to work for Muir Music on Chester Road in the late '70s (Burman dealers!), and I used to hang out in Sounds Acoustic next door.
23. I have two Sennheiser Freeport wireless vocal microphones for sale, in excellent condition, still in the original boxes and packaging. £70 each plus shipping.
24. Oops. Could someone move this into 'Theory and Technique' please?
