1.
If you are constantly having to change keys to suit a limited vocal talent,
The fact that there is a better key to suit the voice of individual singers is not necessarily the sign of a limited vocal talent. Particularly when the song is recorded by a man and your vocalist is female, or vice versa. The MOST important thing as far as a covers band is concerned is getting the song in the right key so that the vocalist can do the best possible performance. Tough for many musos egos to accept but this is a basic fact of life so the sooner you get used to it the better.
2.
So, if it's not in the original key (which is the one I know, inside out, back to front, upside down), is it OK to shoot the singer?
No. Nobody goes to see a covers band because of the bassist. Dont think notes, think intervals. Keys become irrelevant, you look good (or at least, competent :-)
3. Ruler? Off to find some feeler gauges. Interesting that everything is medium. Wait until the upright bass players get involved!
4. Sometimes, sometimes not. Sometimes we need to adjust either up or down a few semitones to put it into the singers best vocal range.
5. A reputable guitar shop in Denmark St? Claiming that they replaced the original frets?? Jack, next time you go on a shopping expedition please drop me a PM so I can come along for some free entertainment!
6. +1 for Gareth Hughes suggestion. Many pro double bass players use a C extension to get those lower notes.
7.
Pretty! What exactly is it?
It is a CIJ PB70 80US fretless, a not-for-export model with US pickups and I'll guess a jazz-width neck. I have an identical one, except that it has frets.
8.
Ah so...my bid would be way off the mark then..
I'm sure he'll take more for it if you insist!
9. What appears to be a Maya precison with a maple neck - is this a '70s Matsumoku? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAYA-BASS-GUITAR_W0Q...id=p3286.c0.m14
10. As it happens, Ishibashi has one in not such good condition for 98,000 yen. With the current exchange rate and shipping costs, you're not going to see a lot of change from £800 if you were to import that one.
11. Snotglo? What we need is bassassin, someone go and haul him over here from the 'ebay' Japcrap thread!
12. I should be able to make this. Can't imagine that most of my gear is of interest but I'll bring a Burman Pro 4000 and a Dean Bromberg B2, which has an unusual Piezo bridge pickup that people might like to see and hear. Nic, you could ask doctor_of_the_bass if his mate Colin would do a tutorial ;-)
13. I think you should also wait until Alex Claber gets a Midget ready.
14.
That fretless Rick is gorgeous.
+1 . I was lucky enough to see it in the flesh, and it really is something special. And that's from someone who doesn't like Ricks! Glad the Ibanez worked out!
15. Are we limited to solid basses, or are acoustic ones allowed too? In which case Fylde http://www.fyldeguitars.com/guitars.html Nigel Thornbory - dunno if he's still making them www.highlystrung.co.uk to name but two.
16. Brian Eastwood ;-) http://www.brianeastwoodguitars.co.uk/coll.html
17. Crimson Guitars.
18. New gold lions? Tell me more! I have JJ Tesla KT77s in my Burmans and they seem to be reasonable quality and work very well. Do JJ make a KT88?
19. Just recieved this response to an offer to pay cash on collection. Looking on the bright side, it's always a pleasure not to deal with people like this! "Hi mate, the bottom line is I wouldn't. Invariably it would be a winning bid followed by you coming to collect the system and trying to offer a lower fee than was bid. I know that I because I WOULD DO THE SAME!"
20. And here's something I've never seen before, and probably never wish to see again: a Hondo Explorer! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hondo-Explorer-Bass-...93%3A2|294%3A50
21. Here's a really interesting looking Ibanez 2366 fretless P . 200 quid seems a bit steep though, what do you reckon? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBANEZ-2366FLB-FRETL...93%3A2|294%3A50
22.
a bad?
I think his 'n' key has stopped working LOL!
23.
I saw the Bucket Boys last year in St Ives. You are on about Tim Renwick who played with the Floyd, The bass player had an upright bass if i remember corectly and they were all very professional, great band.
Tim Renwick! Floyd schmoyd, he played with Sutherland Brothers and Quiver! Serious esoteric class!!
24.
Weird thing was he then started going on about some of the new songs he had in mind not really needing another guitar and doing a trio with a bass player and drummer and there's my mate the guitarist who he's taken on in the first place as a second guitarist/b vox standing right in front of him.
I think a swift chat with your mate might be in order. Then all you need is a drummer and maybe a vocalist ... You'll find it easier to find another band than they will to find a capable bassist. Good luck.
25.
Yeah it's a Modulus Fleabass. Does anyone remember that bass before Flea used it and was known as the Sonic Hammer?
CrazyKiwi had one for a while - I played it and it was awesome. I think it found it's way to Beedster (natch) and then I'm not sure where it went afterwards.
