Been using the nickel "Rock Star" (doh, what a name) ones for 2 years for electric fretless bass. Up to 30+ hard playing gigs per set at times compared to 10 gigs for other strings.
Where do you source them from? I had one set given to me with a bass which were great but I haven't had much luck tracking them down in this country. I can find flats and tapewounds but no roundwounds. EDIT:Found some on a Dutch site:http://www.lordofthestrings.com £24 inc postage. Seems pretty reasonable. I'll update the thread when I get them.

It depends how much you want to spend. £££: You won't go wrong with either an EBS Multicomp or Demeter Compulator. Expect to pay £160ish ££: BBE Optostomp. Great for around £75 £: At the budget end of the scale consider getting a Line 6 Constrictor. I replaced an EBS Multicomp with a Line 6 I picked up off ebay for £30 and it sounds great to my ears. It's flexible too with 3 different compression modes.
Never used it. But it's still sh*t. If I want to buy something, I want to buy it. I don't want to enter into an auction for it. Also, when I look at stuff on there, most of it seems to be online shops as opposed to individuals selling stuff. Most things on there also seem overpriced. I'm sure there's a few bargains, but you really have to search for them. I'd rather pay more and not have the hassle. As for selling on it, that really is sh*t. Unless your lucky enough to sell it to someone who lives close to you, you have to post stuff. As I am unable to use the post office, I'm f***ed. You also need to upload pictures, fill in forms, do stuff etc. At 27, I'm too old to learn a new things like this. I don't think you'll find a stronger and more conclusive argument then the above. From now on, I propose that you all stop using it.
Duly noted. Account cancelled. -

Cool band and fantastic bass tone but he mauls the bassline of I Wish IMO.
I had a DJ, probably one of the weakest basses I have ever owned. It was sold pretty quickly.
Horses for courses I suppose. My DJ4 (with J Retro admittedly) is perfect for the funk band I'm currently in and I have some pretty tasty sounding basses including a Warwick Dolphin.
Hi Ray, Please ask away! The pickup will definitely fit your bass. There only needs to be about 1cm gap for the pickup itself and you want it as close to the bridge as possible so it will be fine. Mine luckily fit perfectly as my pickups are right up against the bridge leaving me zero room either side - it was touch and go but the gamble paid off!! As for the band context, I know where you are coming from. My gear preferences are based purely on band contexts (although more often I am doing studio playing than live stuff) and have found the Vbass to excel in this area. Everything is pretty much infinitely adjustable but I found the sounds superb with little tweaking. Any more questions let me know - I have some samples dotted around somewhere you can check out that might give you some idea of the unit in a band context... Cheers ped
Many thanks for that. I'm seriously contemplating getting the new V Bass (just have to convince t'other half first!) so I may well ask a couple of questions in the near future. Links to samples would be great. Cheers, Ray
You would think with all the Richard Bona reports lately that the Vbass would be top of everyone's xmas list! Here is a nice thread on Talkbass with some extra links and so on. The manual for the unit is now available for download. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=481588 Cheers ped
Hi Ped, I hope you don't mind me asking a couple of questions but you seem to be the resident BC V Bass expert! 1) How usable are the models in a band context? I've been down the Variax bass route in the past and whilst some of the models sounded great in isolation, they always seemed a bit thin in a band situation. 2) Do you think I would be able to fit the divided pickup on a Lakland DJ4 given the way the bridge plate extends towards the bridge pickup? As in this pic: Cheers, Ray

Hi all, Revised price 21/1/09 08 Fender American Standard Precision. Blizzard Pearl with RW board and is currently strung with [s]Fender stainless flats[/s] Labella 'Jamerson' Flats for that old school Motown thump. It has a couple of minor dings as shown in the pics but the overall condition is excellent. I had it setup by Ged Green and it plays and sounds great. I'm only selling because I prefer a Jazz neck and I really fancy a Lakland Duck Dunn. Currently fitted with a pearl white scratchplate but will include the original parchment one. Will also include a fully functional but slightly bashed hard case (non original) I'm willing to drive up to 150 (ish) miles from Manchester to do a deal and would rather not post. £[s]550[/s] £500 delivered. Cheers, Ray *NOW GONE*

I too would recommend a Lakland DJ4. Buy one for £700 ish and put the rest of the cash away for Xmas! After putting a J Retro in my Lakland DJ4 it has become my no. 1 bass. I was saving up for a Sadowsky NYC but I've now put that on hold because the DJ sounds so good.
