I have the Highway 1 jazz, I think it's the biz, the finish is appalling. Never played it live and the finish is pretty much 20% gone - I don't mind that much coz I don't really like pretty basses. Hope that helps a little bit. cheers
Errrm its supposed to wear quickly......! Did you not read up on it before you bought it? They are finished in a thin cellulose finish that wears quickly to give you "a road used" look- Hence the moniker Highway! I have one. Although it has been well and truly pimped, I would thoroughly recommend it in its std form and pimped its excellent! I wanted to hate it but I cant, and I cant put the damn thing down, in fact its the first to be picked up now......

Looking at your pic, I would suggest it was soldered (badly) to the output tab on the Jack socket where other other green wire meets it. Put it back there. While your at it with your solder and wire out, you might want to put a seperate earth wire linking the bodies of both pots to the earth at the jack. Whilst the copper shielding is providing this at the moment, I'm not sure I'd rely on that means alone......
Hmm, Well thanks guys, i went and tried the contempary today and it didn't stack up to my expectations. Definately not enough tone for the likes of me. As it looks now i'm looking at getting a Headless Jack bass Custom from Hohner. I haven't platyed a Hohner before, any problems i should know about?
New Hohners are well made, and quite capable of being set up to play very well. IME they have quite skinny necks though which I'm not keen on (that doesnt mean they arent good though) and maybe at some point if its a passive Jackbass you might want to consider upgrading the electrics as they're not wonderful and in IMO hold back the rest of the bass.

Good question but too techie for this forum I think.....

Hippies are ace, as are Schaller. Maybe not what your after but they will make an improvement to the instrument as a whole...

bigblock 750 / dead preamp tubes ?
The Burpster replied to guiguite's topic in Repairs and Technical
Certainly sounds like a tube has let go. -
GM, Just read your post again..... if this is a std wiring you shouldnt have any wires connecting to that center tab other than the pup output.... are you rewiring the whole lot or did you change some more wires while fitting the pups? if it was a direct 1 for replacement I find it hard to understand how you got to where you are now..... Below is an SD diagram for a std J - V/V/T ... see if that helps.... Hummmn for what yours suggesting, I'd chuck this into the arena... 2ndhand Highway 1 P bass and a Bartolini pup.... My pimped one does exactly what you describe..... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=highway
Any chance of taking and posting a good clear photo of the wiring? Might be able to spot if you've done something obviously wrong.
+1, get a pic on here bud and we'l sort it for you.... Sounds like you've either miss read your wiring diagram or got a dry joint..... (multicore or 5 as you put it should be fine if you done overheat it!)

Get the one that produces the tone your after and you're happy to use..... Dont get too focused on who makes it..! FWIW.....
He could use a cheaper or `more robust' bass but he chooses something that he personally likes! Why bother to criticise? Can't really see the point.
How is that criticism when it is an expressed opinion? Did I say 'he shouldn't be using the Drodz' ? No. Did I say 'he was wrong using an expensive bass for gigging'? No. It frankly wouldnt have an effect worthy of mention (other than 'good on yer mate) if he was playing a PRS in fact I'd love to see VERY expensive basses being used more. The fact remains that elaborate intruments only occasionally get used to effect in the live arena, and more rugged instrument can and will effectively provide a classy bassline in teh right hands! I and B2bM were merely expressing opinions that are, and have held up with years of gigging professionals experiences. Just watch any music programme with a band playing. I'll flip it back to you, why bother eliciting that what was put was criticism, when it clearly isnt?

I wouldnt jump in and buy the 1st bass offered up for grabs..... (especially at the moment) try a few and play about a bit...... 400 sobs is a good amount to get a good/v.good instrument (ESPECIALLY 2nd hand). YOU decide what YOU want and then do some haggling.
Ah, now BMK you touch upon one of my pet subjects. He had a sophisticated bass playing through a Trace head and a Trace 4x12 but there was no distinctive tone coming through. It was tight and audible, but no more interesting than something coming out of China that costs under a ton. And here's my point... OK, the feel/playability may be enhanced by a fancy bass, but in general I think the gigging bass player has to recognise that fancy gear CAN BE wasted in the mix. In a loud band and particularly when using fingers and not a pick, your subtle wood types, deluxe strings, pre-amps, and amps with more knobs than Eton, will not get you much further than if you used equipment costing a fraction of the price. Different in a jazz or semi-acoustic set-up, I grant you. But we rock bassists can be guilty of getting sexed up over boutique gear that frankly is guilding the lilly. There. I've got it off my chest. It's funny how I see things a bit differently now, since hitting an economically challenging time!
SPOT ON! Keep fancy stuff for the studio and your mates houses, gig with rubust stuff like Fenders or Warwicks (even EB-MM)

400 will easily get you a Highway One Fender. (whatever flavour you prefer) You will be hardpushed to get better for that money, unless you have a SPECIFIC need.
It's a 60s Silvertone, model 1443. Silvertone basses around that time were made by Danelectro - I think Silvertone was the house brand for Sears.
Nice spot..... Well done that man! On her Myspace Sarah mentions getting her first bass from a pawn shop, I wonder if thats it?

Holy Shi-ite, I bet you can make windows bow with that..... Nice "wall of sound" rig.....

How to reduce treble hiss in a pre-amp?
The Burpster replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
It could just be as simple as hot pick ups and a pre amp..... Some pups just produce lots of noise when the treble end is boosted. You could try contacting Wizard and see if they could re wind a set for you to get rid of this, OR change teh pre-amp and re-shield as described above which will reduce teh prob as much as you can without changing teh pups. -
I've seen something like that before.... Nicely Pimped sir.....

Her name is Sarah Brown, and she's on myspace. She is a well respected blues artiste from Austin Tx (where Stevie Ray Vaughn came from) so I HUGELY doubt it will be a Burns...... Besides if you look on her myspace you can see a pic of that bass in its entirety and it has 4 on a side tuners..... The Youtube is from 93/94 so its waaaaay too early for a Jag, and it doesnt look like a Mustang either. My guess is its an early Schecter with a PG. However, if your on Myspace send her a message and ask...... If you do let us know...!
