1. Anyone got it on MP3 that they can email to me please? PM me so I can send you my email addy! Ta.... I've already paid for it from iTunes but thats in a protected format.....
2.
Are you wanting to kill from a distance without PA support? I recommend the Mesa Walkabout Scout 12 - 300 Watts great tone etc.. There are reviews and threads a plenty on this combo. I will also recommend the Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 which I play through one or two Aguilar GS112's which can be a 'lightweight' 600 Watt stack or a 300 and something Watt 1x12 stack - again there's loads of stuff here on cabs and the various formats - My Aggies also work with my Markbass R500 which is pretty much like the GB without as many lights - if you prefer an 'understated' mini rig of doom. Everyone will have an opinion but if I had to choose one it would be the Boogie.
Whilst I agree the Walkabout Scout is a fabulous combo, ( I Love mine and I'm not selling it......!) and it happily makes my trousers flap..... As to removing organs? It just hasnt got enough speaker to do that! Thats why I suggested the M-pulse (300 or 600) through a 2x10 and 1x15. OR Ideally and 8ohm Walkabout scout 1x15 and a 2x10 extension. That way you get the 1x15 and down firer, and a 2x10..
3.
Anyone know of a good online supplier in the UK for bass related tee shirts ??
Contact Old Git..... He has a lady friend that will do them.. (I've had acouple of custom jobbies!) VERY good pleasent service....! see this thread... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=clothing
4. I've played thru one, but own a 300 (in a walkabout scout). I've played my 300 Walkbout thru a Vintage powerhouse 2x10 and 1x15 now... (oh boy have I got serious GAS!) Even this little tiddler will remove organs! the 600 is more than enough to cause Richter scale registering volume, without sacrificing tone. Several on here have them. The Ampegs are also good.
5.
the way your all talking, it sounds as though its a real bass. is it? it looks computer animated to me?
It is for real his name is Stig.... (weekend job after lobbing supercars around a track for 3 sad blokes on teh BBC!) he is a Dane and he plays in a group called DAD. ALL his basses are 2 string and weird.
6.
because that's where Leo originally thought it should go... you used the rest as an anchor for your fingers to pull with while plucking downwards with your thumb. In that position, it's not a thumb rest but a "tug-bar".
And thats because when the first electric basses came out, upright players were converting over and they wanted to play with thier thumbs. Leo responded by putting that little block there!
7. My tone is way off the other end of teh spectrum to yours but, I've learnt a lot on the way.... Bass wise I agree the 'Ray and G&L are still up there. Maybe (I dont know your regime) try swapping strings more regularly. To keep that brite 'hi fi' sound yo've gotta change 'em often. Ditch the flats and get into some real brite roundwounds. Amp wise.... Those that own one of these babies.... http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua...t=3&vedi=75 reckon its a real 'hi-fi' sound... Maybe what your after... just my thoughts.
8. Phew.... thought you'd done a runner! Excellent just let me cost and you email addy by PM and I'll get the dosh to you! Bob.
9.
cos nothing annoys me more than people trying things in a meatspace shop and then ordering it from a website-fronted warehouse based outfit.
Surely that is Hugh's choice isn't it? Its a present from his folks. if they dont go with him and they want to buy it for him, how will that work?
10.
I don't *have* to buy Yamaha's own strings though do I?
Absolutely not. In fact you can enhance/ change the sound quite considerably by changing strings... In fact from my experience the Yamaha strings were very bright and chimey.... Not at all what I wanted for the music I play!
11. Fill in your location on your profile... ! i'm sure one of us on here will set it up for you for the cost of a pint! When you get 'round to changing bits there are plenty of good advisors on here!
12. Hummn Like I (after a trip to France) had the missfortune to ask for a Meesh-a-lan tyre..... F++kin bike shop fell about laughing.! OR Mark (the correct way of pronouncing) Mach.
13. Hummmmn I need two.... what does that tell you!
14. Don't be stupid its F+++ing albatross flavour..... "Eeeezzzyy missdaker to maaker" .... Unless you have PRSs or know about them you wouldnt know that.... Surprisingly few folks know much if not anything about PRS basses. Most guitarists (even those with PRS 6 stringers) didnt know PRS even made them. In fact they still do make basses from the 'Private collection' I made a tentative enquiry about a Grainger V bass, "put down a $6000 deposit and you can order one" I was told.

Ayup

If you get a good squire it can be better than a cheap Fender.... Ayup? sounds like your form the Midlands somewhere....? Shouldnt it have 'mi duck' after it?
16. Oh dear, why dont you just slap me in the face? Not a success? Try finding one second hand.. Its a PRS 4 made between '88 and '91. One of the original 'set neck' variants. (same as the one Robbie plays!) The 'birds in flight" inlays are not "seaguls" they are in fact 9 different birds. http://cgi.ebay.com/Paul-Reed-Smith-1986-4...Q2em118Q2el1247 Paul later made the bolt on neck PRS IV EB of which I have 2 (made between 2000+ 2004). They were a success, believe me! Ask anyone who owns one! There are not alot around because i) they are expensive ii) PRS has only made 1500 basses IN TOTAL FYI the guitarist is playing a custom 22.
17. Pete, they are like that for a while. Its the sharp edges where the round wire has been ground down. It does help if you wipe 'em down (hard) with an alcohol soaked rag before you put them on. Some D'add strings seem to have a 'packing grease' type lube on them from new which is also sticky but muckey as well....
18.
So for a beginner, in your opinion, one word: Passive or Active?
Sounds to me your a pretty switched on young chap ..... Active is useful as it will (Eventually) give you more variables when you start playing with others. Passive is easier to understand and MUCH easier to modify and tweak..... Both produce different sounds..... really its YOUR choice..... I learnt with Passive, was happy with it. and now use both.
19.
Are there any basses with both Passive *and* active wiring? I'm quite happy to replace a 9V battery every so often if it enhances the sound. Are there active pickups on guitars as well?
Most basses with active electrics you can run passive too (so switching off the pre amp). Basses use them alot because bass signal can sometimes get lost in a band setting and needs a 'wee bit of help'.... A few makers have tried active electrics in 6 stringers but it never caught on, they prefer to use overdrive effects (pedals) or pre-amps with thier amplifiers.
20. 414 is Passive (does not have an on board pre amp) so the signal coming out of the pick ups is that which is sent to the amp. 614 is Active (has pre amp built in) so requires different wiring and a 9V battery inserting into it, this enhances the signal from the pick ups to the amp. It can be very useful, it an be a pain at times too. The wiring in Yamahas can be somewhat odd. Rather than stick with easy (read; sensible and usable) options they often plump for blend set ups that can be confusing, and really 'off the wall' I never really did find out what the knobs did on my RBX 170 until I re wired it. Vol Vol Tone as I described above (often refered to as V/V/T) is each of the 2 pick ups (refered to as pups) having their own volume knob (pot or potentiometer) and one Tone knob that cuts out some high end signal making teh resultant signal more 'bassy'. This is a common and sensible set up on basses with 2 pups and passive electrics. The 3 band EQ that is on the 614 gives you positive boost to 3 parts of the signal, bass, mid, and treble (if you wish to use it), but can add a whole minefield of variables when you are setting out. I see they dont make a 414 in natural, that is a bit of a b*gger isnt it....
21.
The 414 has a three way selector switch which won't give you the fine control you need to 'cut into' the band sound.
OR Rather than get a 614 he can stick with the 414, and when he gets to that stage and knows the difference he can ditch the shonky Jap wiring and wire it Vol Vol Tone......
22.
I am not arguing, but AFAIK the whole point of using cocktail sticks is that they are harder than matchsticks and therefore more durable. Being small, means that you fit as many as needed.
It is better to completely fill the hole, than leave gaps which you will do with cocktail stick as they dont tessallate well. It may take a little longer to whittle the end to fit perfectly but its worth the time. It will make a stronger joint with the hole completely filled with a sligthly softer wood, than lots of smaller bits that could become dislodged when you drive the wood screw into it. I learnt this from a gun stocker, who used all sorts of exotic woods and is country renowned for his repair work on best english guns.
23. My 4 string Fender doesn't dive...... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18771
