I agree with the 'so many bands have sucked the groove out of superstition' comments. The only Stevie Wonder song I've played live was Sir Duke (annoyingly only to play it once live!) But it went down brilliantly, even before the showy offy part. Really satisfying when you dont screw it up too.

Whats the hardest bassline you've ever played?
Bach's Cello Suite No.1 In the original key, in the original octave
In the process of learning this just now from nothing but sheet music. I've never read sheet music before and the piece is about as far from my comfort zone as you can get. -
Ever turned a band down cos of tunings?
Cameronj279 replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Can't say I have. I've almost always played 5 strings so never really had a problem with the tunings of guitars. Edit - I've left a band because if guitarists not owning a tuner/refusing to use one because "my ears are better". -
I should add i have nothing against 5 or 6 strings i just think they don't look as nice as a 4 string.
There are definitely certain shapes that just suit a 4 string and not a 5/6. Warwick Thumb looks weird as a 4 string but great as a 5 string IMO

Very nice Gary. the fingerboard is especially nice
I really like that!. And am jealous lol. Also thankfully not some horrid 5 string thing
Were it a 5 string I would have bought it in May! Tis good to see it sold though...although was looking forward to having a go a the bass bash and can't now It sounds better than it looks (and that's quite a statement) for those who are curious about the sound!

If it's just something to use traveling to and from gigs I'd recommend the Mono Vertigo gig bag. it's semi-rigid but feels bomb proof with excellent padding and neck support.

Looks great! Somehow it's reminding me of a Coders (but not ugly as sin). Would love to hear how it sounds
Tempo advance. A little fiddily at times but you can program set lists and share them, do tempo changes and time signature changes, and do mind blowing sub divisions with ease. I like the feature where you can change the sound or mute certain beats, so if you have a piece in five for example 3+2 beat 4 can have a separate accent. Not rocket science but really useful.
This seems ideal for getting the drummer into gear! He seems to be struggling with 9/8...can't say I don't struggle sometimes either to be honest.

During my first ever gig which was all original music I accidentally played the verse of our third song during the second song. I only realised this when the third song started! We were rather unrehearsed and the sound wasn't clear enough for me to know better. I didn't ask for it to be sorted either...due to nerves probably. Same gig. During the first verse of the first song the drummers kick pedal beater thing stuck to the bass drum and wouldn't budge. luckily he used a double kick pedal and was good enough to use his left foot for the full thing

Showed the girlfriend this. She was suitably impressed!

How you finding the music scene/gigs where you are?
Cameronj279 replied to ellie's topic in General Discussion
Plenty of bands here but very few of which seem to be putting out any music that I would enjoy listening to/want to go see live. The acoustic singer/songwriter thing seems most common (and personally I can't think of anything more boring to watch). -
Alpher Mako Elite five string - Warning: Buckeye Burl content
Cameronj279 replied to Kev's topic in Build Diaries
That is going to be one very pretty looking bass! Picked a great cut of buckeye for the top too, just the right amount of 'in your faceness' about it. -
Depending on funds I may make it along. I do quite like Manchester
Back on topic. Why would anyone want to listen to music they don't like? Can't understand it. Even if you like what the bassist is doing, if the context is not enjoyable then what's the point?
Sometimes (not often) I'll listen to music I don't particularly enjoy if I feel I'd be able to learn something from it or just be able to hear something in it that could lead to me coming up with something that I enjoy. Rush are a good example of this for me.

Funny things that people say to you at gigs
there's at least 10 cups consumed between us at every rehearsal.
Not at a gig and not an audience member but at a rehearsal a few weeks back I went for a coffee as we had a quick break. Drummer asked me to get him a coffee.. Turns out he takes 6 sugars in it if he's using a small cup (maybe 150/200ml tops). I tried it and instantly felt sick. Waste of good coffee! -
How far would you go for your favourite band?
Cameronj279 replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in General Discussion
If I had the funds I'd pay to see Tool wherever they played. So far I've been to Manchester to see Primus and Rammstein and London to see Primus (2 dates at Royal Albert). Mainly due to money as there's lots of bands I'd travel much further afield to see. -
Any news on wither your mate is coming along.
Spoke to him the other day, he's off to Estonia on the Sunday unfortunately. Don't even know anybody else who would be up for coming either another edit : Dont suppose anybody knows prices of busses from Glasgow? Stagecoach are quite good at keeping all information as private as possible!

Looking forward to hopefully trying out the twin filter pedal! Been curious about it for a while but not had a chance to try one.
-
Not a bad band, just not my type of thing. Japan. Mick Karn was a great bass player but I just can't get past the singer unfortunately.
-
I always use stainless steel strings (I figure it's easier to EQ treble out than in) but find Steels easier on the fingers than Nickels!
-
I've only been playing 5 and a half years so not too much delving into the past required here! For me it was after listening to Primus for a few years I decided to look up live videos of Les Claypool. I watched a video of him playing The Awakening and just said "I want to do that!". 2 months later I had bought a crappy bass and amp to get me going.

If people want to learn spngs by ear and improve their 'ear' they will put the effort in as far as I'm concerned.
-
People are silly enough to put it in their listings but people are also silly enough to ask the question in the first place. I'm sure we've all asked something stupid at some point...I do it all the time (although not quite that daft).

Been in the wrong tuning once or twice...luckily quick fix between songs. We have one song where I start it solo and as we seem to change the set list each gig I started it a song too early to get some funny looks by guitarist and singist.
