1.
Back on topic. Why would anyone want to listen to music they don't like? Can't understand it. Even if you like what the bassist is doing, if the context is not enjoyable then what's the point?
Sometimes (not often) I'll listen to music I don't particularly enjoy if I feel I'd be able to learn something from it or just be able to hear something in it that could lead to me coming up with something that I enjoy. Rush are a good example of this for me.
2.
there's at least 10 cups consumed between us at every rehearsal.
Not at a gig and not an audience member but at a rehearsal a few weeks back I went for a coffee as we had a quick break. Drummer asked me to get him a coffee.. Turns out he takes 6 sugars in it if he's using a small cup (maybe 150/200ml tops). I tried it and instantly felt sick. Waste of good coffee!
3. If I had the funds I'd pay to see Tool wherever they played. So far I've been to Manchester to see Primus and Rammstein and London to see Primus (2 dates at Royal Albert). Mainly due to money as there's lots of bands I'd travel much further afield to see.
4.
Any news on wither your mate is coming along.
Spoke to him the other day, he's off to Estonia on the Sunday unfortunately. Don't even know anybody else who would be up for coming either another edit : Dont suppose anybody knows prices of busses from Glasgow? Stagecoach are quite good at keeping all information as private as possible!
5. Looking forward to hopefully trying out the twin filter pedal! Been curious about it for a while but not had a chance to try one.
6. Not a bad band, just not my type of thing. Japan. Mick Karn was a great bass player but I just can't get past the singer unfortunately.
7. I always use stainless steel strings (I figure it's easier to EQ treble out than in) but find Steels easier on the fingers than Nickels!
8. I've only been playing 5 and a half years so not too much delving into the past required here! For me it was after listening to Primus for a few years I decided to look up live videos of Les Claypool. I watched a video of him playing The Awakening and just said "I want to do that!". 2 months later I had bought a crappy bass and amp to get me going.
9. If people want to learn spngs by ear and improve their 'ear' they will put the effort in as far as I'm concerned.
10. People are silly enough to put it in their listings but people are also silly enough to ask the question in the first place. I'm sure we've all asked something stupid at some point...I do it all the time (although not quite that daft).
11. Been in the wrong tuning once or twice...luckily quick fix between songs. We have one song where I start it solo and as we seem to change the set list each gig I started it a song too early to get some funny looks by guitarist and singist.
12.
Playing solo bass through headphones is like having a hand shandy on a bus. No-one does it unless they really have to.
13. Does it sound good when in a mix, with your current band(s), on recordings? If yes to the above - why fix what isn't broken?
14. Whilst on stage last week : "Cheer the f*ck up mate, your bands great"
15. My band are all originals but I know from reading many cover/function band type setlists that there is maybe only one or two songs I wouldn't skip if they started playing. Music I listen to tends to span quite a lot of genres but so much of the music that is commonly covered I can't stand to listen to. Nothing against people who play in covers bands (Chances are you're making money from music and I'm certainly not!).
16. Going to look great! I've always had a soft spot for glittery finishes for some reason.
17.
Break it all down to three's and two's. I.e 5/4. Count/ feel as 1,2,3,1,2
This is pretty much what I do. For each part find a way to count it that makes sense to you. Break it down to be as simple as possible and it'll all come with practice.
18. I love Warwicks but theie custom shop prices are just mental. Will be interesting to see how the new pro series compare to the older German models.
19.
I thought it was Japan. Very Mick Karn and David Sylvian. Very good though. really atmospheric stuff
I thought it was Mick Karn stuff as well (admittedly I've only just discovered his work in the last few weeks though).
20.
No I am afraid not but if you want them I can burn a CD of the various bits and pieces for the Bass Bash.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble it would be greatly appreciated!
21. Ah, that makes sense. Don't suppose there's anywhere I could go to buy/download the tracks? Really quite enjoyed them
22. I'll maybe message him if nobody here knows. I feel like I've messaged him enough with (most likely) daft questions about my Recurve Didn't think of that BRX, will have a look when I can get round to it
23. Was on Youtube looking at various "how to build a bass" type videos noticed ACG has some time lapses up and most of which seem to use songs by one artist but I can't figure out who it is. I could message him but I figure he has better things to do really http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UImirgGylHQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk2QNbuqVyc
24. Damn you Kev. Literally posting this at the worst time for me!
25. Take whatever sounds best. As people have already said, I quite like a bit of gear spotting at gigs and find it somewhat refreshing to see a bassist using anything other than a Fender P or J bass as everybody seems to have at least one. But whatever sounds best for the gig is what to take IMO.
