If it doesn't relate to the picture for me, it doesn't get my vote. However, I think there will always be some bias in favour of the voter's taste - it's only natural.

This may be talking about another friction situation, but is relevant: http://www.schunk-group.com/uploads/media/2008-03-31_Schunk_carbon-brush_Surface_roughness.pdf "On polished surfaces exist more contact points between the contact partners. Therefore the friction coefficient is slightly higher, the mechanical losses and the surface tempera- ture are increased. • On smooth, polished, moving surfaces the so called „stick-slip“ effect can have much more dramatic consequences. This is a change of static friction and sliding friction. It is easy to imitate this phenomenon, by trying to slide a hand over a smooth glass surface. On moving surfaces this effect creates vibrations with high frequencies but low ampli- tudes."

Along with Markbass, they fall into the "great sound, shame about the look" category for me
I just leave it with the setup it came with. Why, is that wrong?
Not if it already plays nicely and the intonation is good

So my £90 at the Bass Centre was a rip off? London weighting perhaps Edit: I've dug out the ten year old receipt for the 'service' £95 for a full service including a set of Elites. It was Chris Ward at the Bass Centre who did it

Do older strings sound nicer than new ones?
Roland Rock replied to BetaFunk's topic in General Discussion
I can speak for the whole of Basschat when I say "yes". Next topic please. -
Welcome to basschat. Generally speaking, active basses have higher output than passive basses, but that's more of a rule of thumb, rather than a cast iron rule. An active input simply 'pads' the signal to compensate for the higher output of the active bass. If you prefer the sound of the bass through the passive input, go for it. The LH500 has a valve preamp, and it's probable that you are just overdriving the preamp valve and reaping the sonic rewards.

There were three that tingled my pants: Discreet, this is the second month in a row that you've produced a stonking, high quality electrotune. You obviously have a talent for this type of music. Lowdown, who doesn't love being spanked by 12" of quality camp funky disco? Marvellous stuff. JamesFlashG, I liked this a lot, especially the Squarepusher flavoured bass playing, and especially especially the stripped-down outro. In the end, Lowdown clinched it for me

Re. cheques- I'm far too trusting, last time we played in London, the organiser said that she was stuck that night and would post a cheque with the balance, and I agreed. Either I'm a good judge of character or just lucky, but she came through as promised. I'm impressed with your initiative going round and finding an alternative venue. You took a potentially dire situation and turned it right round to a successful gig - well done. I know it left a bad taste in your mouths, but you got paid, everyone had a good time, and you've learned that next time, you need to specify a minimum stage area in the contract!

My only memory of them is that they felt exactly like roundwounds!

Why is there a lack of bass in traditional asian music
Roland Rock replied to mentalextra's topic in General Discussion
A total guess: bass instruments tend to be really big, and were impractical for traditional musicians who tended to travel from town to town. -
I think this is lovely. The Fenderish headstock gives it a more old school look, and I especially love the control plate and scratch plate. It's a shame that the neck heel no longer has that gorgeous W&T flowing curve though. It sounds great in the vid, and you just know, being a W&T that it will play like a dream

The Thirteen Dumbest Band Names in Rock History
Roland Rock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Somebody mentioned K*nt And The Gang earlier....they played a gig recently in Nottingham on the same bill as Arse Full Of Chips. I can't decided whether that's a dumb name or a great one!
Yeah, I've played on the same bill as the dude from Arse Full of Chips. There's another Nottingham based band I've seen posters for called Pickled Dick -
Lightning Bolt. Just bass and drums, although the bass does sound quite guitarish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X3-RRCR7qY

Truss Rod - To Loosen Strings Or Not?
Roland Rock replied to spongebob's topic in Repairs and Technical
Not so easy with my P - I have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod! Thankfully, it rarely needs it -
Andy Fraser on Breakfast - BBC1 at 8:50am
Roland Rock replied to Musky's topic in General Discussion
I tuned in at 8.55 and only caught the end. It was an interview, and he was plugging an act on his record label, as well as his own new album. Unfortunately I missed any interesting stuff :-( -
Remember reading some threads on Talkbass about them eating frets, not sure how true that is!
I've had a five string set on my main player for a year now, no sign of fret wear yet. In terms of longevity, I'd say the new 'zing' lasted about the same as most other rounds. To my ears, they have a nice emphasis in the lower mids (compared to the Foderas they replaced), The 'played in' tone is full, round and clear, which is why I've kept them on for so long.
