1. Many thanks chaps. I've tried a bit of used credit card which seem to be the right thickness. Not sure if it's best sonically the nut action fnarr fnarr is really nice now
2. On Monday the g slot on my SX Precision nut broke off at rehearsal so I ordered new Graphtech Tusq nut. It fits the slot perfectly but is too low. The G string is flat on the first fret. Can I shim the nut as I'd like to use it and if so what's the best method ? I've read all sorts of stuff involving bits of plastic, veneer or baking soda and superglue I would get a blank and have a go at cutting a new one but don't have any nut files.
3. Great to hear you're back on the road again. Best wishes and [s]good luck[/s] break a leg with the new band.
4.
hi guys got my ibanez sr300 purely for the fact is has a small neck 38ml at the nut as i have real small fingers im still struggling quite a bit with my small fingers ie if im running down scales and go from the 1st fret a string to 4th e string ect anyone got any ideas to make things easier ie excercises or should i start doing yoga stretches on my fingers thanks jamie
Hi Jamie, Yoga stretching fingers sounds good. Warm up excercises for your hands wrists and fingers before you start playing are always a good idea especially if you're stretching. I have very small hands too and have found that 1 fret per finger on the left hand can end up being quite painful and tiring but have a pretty good stretch having been playing for years. However best advice I can offer is to keep practising those scales keeping your thumb and hand fairly fluid and mobile on the back of the neck and move around rather than stretch your fingers too hard, especially if you haven't been playing long; a good classical hand position with plenty of air between the neck and he palm is good. Also don't use excessive pressure I read some good advice a few years ago suggesting that if you fret a note and release the pressure to the point where it starts to buzz you'll be surprised to find how little grip is actually needed to hold down a note cleanly. This will enable you to move around more deftly too. Hope this helps.
5.
Any feedback / volunteers for any parts of this? I will probably start planning in anger sometime next week.
Good man Charic Happy to help where I can. any thoughts on dates yet ?
6. medium Too old for low High=carpal tunnel syndrome
7. All of the above. Great stuff I really enjoyed this. Thanks.
8. I feel for her. This has happened to me at a sunny outside gig in front of a huge crowd. I couldn't see the LEDs on my regular tuner, there was no time to soundcheck, quickly swapped to my spare LCD tuner that had been rattling around in my toolbox and retuned thinking that was lucky I was a fairly out, must be the heat. Not realising that my tuner was knocked off 440hz regular tuning somehow and started the first song at a really odd pitch completely different to everyone else so I couldn't even transpose on the fly. It was my worst on stage moment. I just stopped playing and luckily I had the option to swap to another bass, missing a big chunk of the song. I'm still getting the pee taken 2 years on by my guitard and drummer !
9. Congratulations. That's a real bargain. Is that jam on your smiley ?
10. Realy nice Bilbo. More fuel for my EUB gas that I,ve been suffering since trying one at the East anglia bass bash months ago
11.
Nice question, but the need is simply defining the belief and code of the group in question, and it is also true that other faiths and even to some extent now non faiths do form groups You maybe reading this as they are forming something exclusive to them, but it is most likely the complete opposite, if they are truly christian, welcoming in and being with non believers etc is a big part of being christian As I said in a previous post, I am not a christian, but am a supporter of my local church, I see them do amazing things through a number of projects, and have found myself getting involved with the music through that For me, especially as someone who doesn't understand the emotion of worship I see in the crowd where I play, it was very uncomfortable to start with, as I saw people who clearly used the music to connect with their God ? I was used to playing in front of a party crowd and obviously this was different, I even thought my being there might be wrong But now I really just lose myself in the music and enjoying the evening
What an excellent post lojo. I'm enjoying this thread. Thanks
12. I'm very much in the same mind as skol303 on this and as an atheist have often been really moved by gospel and spiritual music. A few years ago we went with a friend to the Glide mission church in San Francisco's tenderloin district, it was Christmas, and the most uplifting and enjoyable religious service I've ever attended. This was largely due to the lovely warm welcoming congregation but also the stupendously good choir and band filling this huge auditorium of a church with joyous sound. I've seen a few clips on here of very cool funky gospel bass players in the USA but although the words don't always strike a chord with my personal beliefs, the love, and soul evident in a lot of this type of music certainly dusts my broom. Why not post some clips on here chaps ? Edit: Funny enough just saw this : http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=77094&hl=
13. I'm reluctantly thinking of selling my g**tar amp as much as I love it it's not getting a lot of use these days. It's the black face twin channel one and in excellent condition with cover, footswitch manuals etc. Thinking £550 ?
14. Our keyboard player is having a clear out: "I'm reluctantly flogging a few keyboards if you know of anyone who might be interested: Roland RD600 Stage Piano + flightcase (mint) - £600 Roland RD200 Stage Piano (vintage! - a few battle scars and faulty middle A contact) - £100 Roland D50 + hard case - £300 - Immaculate except for one scratch Hammond XB1 Organ + hard case (mint) - £300 (All manuals included)" if you're interested PM me and I'll forward contact details
15. OK i own up: My name is mike and I... like playing Rio. Really struggled with hungry like a wolf a while back until i read all the stuff about how john Taylor's bass parts were mostly fudged in the studio and he couldn't play it live either. Just got he hang of it and my band dropped it.
16. You'll really like the SX bump. I bought WHUFC's and it's lovely. Your Encore sounds a bargain.
17. I have a Thumper in my SX P copy. it's very good does and does Thump very well. Also the chap at Wizard is very helpful
18. Thanks Markus but I think that he was looking for someone a bit closer to teach bass guitar to his 12 year old son.
19. One of my clients is looking for a bass tutor for his son in the Fowlmere, Royston, Cambridge area. Can anyone help please?
20. Yes where else would I rest my thumb ?
21.
Thankyou very much! Currently working my way through the mad melody part in Sir Duke slowly i might add! AC
It easy...playing it on your own that is !
22. I've had active basses and back to basics is the way forward IMHO. Having become very attached to my souped up SX Precision, recently purchased from WHUFC on here, over the last few months I'm starting to think that 2 pickups and 3 knobs on my beloved US Jazz bass is a bit more complicated than required. Given the cash I'd get a US standard P like yours any day. Nice !
23. Strange isn't it ? even my long suffering wife, who's eyes glaze over at the mention of any new bass related equipment after all these years was quite interested in the recent pic of me pretending that I knew how to play Moonbass' lovely NS WAV 4 at the recent East Anglia Bass Bash. Caption added by my son who has just discovered Photoshop.
24. Oh dear ! Some great pictures there. Thanks Dood. ( I don't think that I'll be needing that free dinner after all).
25. Free dinner what? Where? Is it still available ? I'll drive back it's only 40 mins away. Thanks very much Charic and all the rest of you for a grand day out, the chance to try some lovely gear and to meet you all. I hope that the ACG continues to play nicely for you Charic and next time I'll come prepared to deliver my fascinating and exciting talk about allen keys and feeler gauges. Speaking of gas Now I just need to persuade Mrs Lonestar why I need a NS EUB, a Stingray 5 and a Rickenbacker. Anyone got a spare room free just in case ? I may need it once I'm discharged from casualty.
