Help: Annoying background noise from new Phil Jones Combo
lonestar replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks guys. Well I've emailed Phil Jones' support twice and have had no response - not the great customer service I'd heard about. I'll keep you posted C
Elsewhere on this forum a while back I remember that there were some very nasty exchanges between Phil Jones and someone else on here regarding his products. Good luck Beedster! -

I've use 0000 wire wool to polish after initially giving them a cleanup with 400 grade wet 'n' dry paper and finishing with old fashioned Brasso on a piece of cloth. After masking the fretboard with tape as velvetkevorkian suggested of course.
+1 for Erhlewine books. I went on one of Patrick Eggle's set up courses a couple of years ago in Oswestry, very useful day spent learning about nuts and setups and fret dressing as well as action, relief, intonation, etc. Such a nice chap. Got a basic rounded fret dressing file off ebay which helps recrown them after they have been levelled. Just need a steady hand and some patience.
I wonder is he still running that course?

Hi Jamie The Dan Erhlewhine book is an excellent starting point on how to do it. Here is a source for specialist fret files and tools: http://www.stewmac.com/international.html Pricey but good I understand. I'm a bit like you in that I can do most reversible setup techniques but not much experience of fret dressing. and fretboard stuff other than polishing frets. I have a pretty good method for this that I can share with you i spoke to jon Shuker once about running a course for all of this kind of advanced setup skills and he seemed quite interested. i'd like to learn more about nuts and frets too.
With those upgrades and that case I'd say the price is not unreasonable but for those who don't like the price: why not keep your nose out of it instead of interfering with someone else's sale? If you really can't help yourself at least make it a polite PM.
Quite right. De ja vu? We had this issue recently.Surely a PM would be more fair and appropriate. But as we're all at it now:Personally I don't think that it's an unfair price, I have an unmodded EPi 335 dot;it's very good and would be even better with some decent pickups. I've often considered fitting some classic Gibson '57s or something similar. Good luck with the sale. Bassmat -
Elvis - The Vegas Cheeseburger years. Who was his bassist?
There's a live version of Suspicious Minds which I reckon has some of the best bass playing ever on it, real tight and the line just builds and builds. Pretty good bass line anyway, but Elvis takes the song out at a hell of a pace which makes the musicianship even more impressive C
That's the one that immediately sprang to mind when I saw this thread. fantastic stuff. -
I asked Tony Levin this at a Bass Clinic a while ago as we do it in my band. Answer a Fretless Music man (I think) played with a pick, octave pedal and most probably compression; It was 1985
I'd be all over this if I had the jazz know-how. I love jazz so much but really struggle to play it properly.
Me too! Mind you having had a quick nosey at your site Ray looks/sounds like you've got a good funky thing going on there already! -
What's your most surreal moment in music?
lonestar replied to ashevans09's topic in General Discussion
A few years ago while playing along the route of the London Marathon, about 23 miles in, a runner stopped. Politely said "excuse me" and took the mic from our singer mid- I feel good, sang a whole verse and chorus, pretty much note perfectly, handed the mic back and carrried on running. -
I have done this show over in Europe...[ on Electric - but this really is a double Bass chair] Most of it is written in double time and cut common. If you are new to this type of playing, i would listen to a CD or recording of the show - A LOT.To get a good feel for it. Charts these days are usually printed, but You will need a pencil [or many] for changes made at rehearsals. Good line of sight for the MD/conductor, Tempo changes and direction. Personally for me, i use a volume pedal, not for dynamics but just for on and off between tunes, you dont want to make unwanted noises. and an inline tuner, i also take my own DI box [sans amp] - but usually supplied. But most of all follow the conductor/MD. The norm would be to follow the Kit player out side of a pit situation. But if he aint following the conductor full on - it can get messy tempo wise. And the MD could jump out of his pram. So if you are new at the sight reading thing, really use the time at rehearsals to get to know the geography of the charts. Maybe take a music stand extension for those tunes that have pages and pages of notes, page turns tend to be when you are in the key of Gb But the main thing is just relax - all the other guys in the band are in the same position as you. Just enjoy! EDIT..... Just seen your post above... Looks like its Am Dram time... In that case forget everything i said....and just try and shag as many of the cast as you can in the run Garry
Great Post Garry! -

Check out David Sylvian's album Secrets of The Behive for more Danny Thompson Loveliness plus Mark Isham on trumpet, especially the track Orpheus.

I'd like to sympathise with you Mr Bassatnight but you have too many nice basses and it serves you right Seriously though I thought the policy on here was not to quibble over sellers prices in public and as you say effectivelystitch up honest members who just want to sell their stuff. If you don't like the price don't buy or if you feel that you must offer advice because someone is taking the wotsit then surely a PM would be more appropriate. Any moderators advice here? Good luck with your sale. Mike Edit: This from the market place guidlines "5. If you believe the price of the item is too cheap/expensive, then please PM the seller as to why. Do not ridicule or undermine the seller by posting how much you think it's worth or how much it can be gotten for elsewhere, the laws of supply and demand will determine if the item sells at that price". I rest my case

I'm not feeling bored just slightly inadequate. That's really impressive!
