1. I asked Tony Levin this at a Bass Clinic a while ago as we do it in my band. Answer a Fretless Music man (I think) played with a pick, octave pedal and most probably compression; It was 1985

 5.
I'd be all over this if I had the jazz know-how. I love jazz so much but really struggle to play it properly.
Me too! Mind you having had a quick nosey at your site Ray looks/sounds like you've got a good funky thing going on there already!
 6. A few years ago while playing along the route of the London Marathon, about 23 miles in, a runner stopped. Politely said "excuse me" and took the mic from our singer mid- I feel good, sang a whole verse and chorus, pretty much note perfectly, handed the mic back and carrried on running.
 7.
I have done this show over in Europe...[ on Electric - but this really is a double Bass chair] Most of it is written in double time and cut common. If you are new to this type of playing, i would listen to a CD or recording of the show - A LOT.To get a good feel for it. Charts these days are usually printed, but You will need a pencil [or many] for changes made at rehearsals. Good line of sight for the MD/conductor, Tempo changes and direction. Personally for me, i use a volume pedal, not for dynamics but just for on and off between tunes, you dont want to make unwanted noises. and an inline tuner, i also take my own DI box [sans amp] - but usually supplied. But most of all follow the conductor/MD. The norm would be to follow the Kit player out side of a pit situation. But if he aint following the conductor full on - it can get messy tempo wise. And the MD could jump out of his pram. So if you are new at the sight reading thing, really use the time at rehearsals to get to know the geography of the charts. Maybe take a music stand extension for those tunes that have pages and pages of notes, page turns tend to be when you are in the key of Gb But the main thing is just relax - all the other guys in the band are in the same position as you. Just enjoy! EDIT..... Just seen your post above... Looks like its Am Dram time... In that case forget everything i said....and just try and shag as many of the cast as you can in the run Garry
Great Post Garry!

 9. Check out David Sylvian's album Secrets of The Behive for more Danny Thompson Loveliness plus Mark Isham on trumpet, especially the track Orpheus.
 10. I'd like to sympathise with you Mr Bassatnight but you have too many nice basses and it serves you right Seriously though I thought the policy on here was not to quibble over sellers prices in public and as you say effectivelystitch up honest members who just want to sell their stuff. If you don't like the price don't buy or if you feel that you must offer advice because someone is taking the wotsit then surely a PM would be more appropriate. Any moderators advice here? Good luck with your sale. Mike Edit: This from the market place guidlines "5. If you believe the price of the item is too cheap/expensive, then please PM the seller as to why. Do not ridicule or undermine the seller by posting how much you think it's worth or how much it can be gotten for elsewhere, the laws of supply and demand will determine if the item sells at that price". I rest my case
 11. I'm not feeling bored just slightly inadequate. That's really impressive!
 12. Great weren't they?
 13. Welcome to Basschat Dave, There are quite a few of us in Essex now.
 14.
Angle-grinder. Next...
or just buy a new bass and send me the old one for disposal especially if it's a '62 Precision.
 15. Masking tape between the frets and liquid brasso (it's not abrasive). Use the same bit of cloth and very little polish and it works a treat I've also polished up and removed marks from g**tar frets using 400 grade wet and dry followed by 0000 wire wool and then finished with the Brasso. Time-consuming but silky smooth frets. I've read that you can use Brasso on varnished maple fret boards too but not tried this and it sounds a bit messy.
 16.
Apologies, but I've only just caught this thread. You're welcome to my route home, but you might not escape alive. It's great music to play but you just don't get the groupies. I think, after reading The Dirt, I'd settle for Motley Crue.
Just seen this on Partysounds and thought of you: MOTLEY CRUE TRIBUTE BAND 'THE DIRT-PUBLIC ENEMY NO 1' NEED A BASSIST ASAP, GOOD EQUIPMENT AND TRANSPORT ESSENTIAL. Cambridgeshire East Anglia Standard: Semi-Pro

Want me to take him out* * for pizza, obviously ...
Just make him an offer he can't refuse. 25. My band Plan C played a short set at Leigh Regatta today. I just had to take bass and lead and used a nice big Ashdown ABM rig curtesy of a fine bass chap from Malachi the first band on. First gig with our new keyboard player Simon. Went really well. It was lovely sunny day, nice people and top seafood stalls;lovely cockles. The kids came along too. What's not to like?
