2. I've never had mine cutout (bugger i probably shouldn't have said that) but I think that the DI is Post Pre-amp so our sound geek insists on taking my bass into the di box directly to the pa and I then take a link from the box to my amp, a CMD102p. So if it did cutout it'd still come out FOH.Which is reassuring I spose now that i've probably jinxed the next gig.
  3. Ah Norwich! It's not the end of the world but you may be able to see it from there.
  4. I'd be very keen to come along, especially on a Sunday in Cambridge. The Perse would be a great venue. Build it and they will come!
  5.
Evening all, I recently bought a Mark Bass Little Mark III amp which I think is fantastic but I just wondered how much other MB owners use this control and what for? I assume that there is no way of switching this on and off with a footswitch? Any advice on how to use this nifty control would be appreciated. BTW I play mostly funk music!
Brilliant amps aren't they? The VLF boosts the bass and treble and gives a "scooped" sound. Like setting a graphic EQ into a smile setting. Great for slapping or for a modern hi-fi sound. I find though that it's best not to overdue it; setting it about 11o'clock seems to work. Problem is it sounds good but tends to get a bit lost in a band mix. There have been quite a few posts on basschat about this and the VLE filter. someone on here gets a really goodsound turning both filters up Try it! For me with my US Jazz bass my default is to set all the controls flat ie in the middle, the filters off and a bit of low mid boost at 1 o'clock. Sounds great.
  6.
Well quite, although I hear Sting likes to keep a pocketful of sugarcubes in the off chance he or Trudy get peckish
mmm tantric sugar

  8.
Umm, it's not a competition That Jaco song is not something I would ever want to hear again. Only the drums and voice make it funky. If I wanted to hear bass like that I would choose Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, which is much more listen-able, and a really good song. It's Just Jaco showing off again, which is what he nearly always does. That's not a song, its a bass idea with music and vocal around it. The only thing I liked about it is that drum drop which makes the music lurch beautifully. That's it for me. Otherwise I would just switch off.
+1 for Rhytm stick! I like a lot ofweather report but some of my favourite Jaco is on Joni Mitchell's Hejira album.
  9. I liked Brad X but this does nothing for me. I just don't get it
  10.
I know lots of people dislike the guy, because of what they read and see of him in the meejah, but this isn't about that. This is about the fact he is a fabulous pop and rock bassist. I realise some of the qualities below are because he is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, but most of the celebrated pop and rock bassists are aswell, like Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Paul McCartney. It is why I can't get into Jaco, Wooten, Alain Caron, etc. They are not songwriters, they are instrument operators with enormous facility. To me they are making bass a solo instrument, which I don't like at all. Compared to other solo-inclined instruments, it is simply far too limited, both in timbre and potential for compelling expression, beyond the odd song or two. Which is why most solo-type bassists all do more-or-less the same thing. It's like the difference between a sax and a tuba. I don't want to hear a tuba solo, do you? That's just my view you understand. Sting Qualities: He uses the bass to get the most from his songs. He uses the bass to get the most from his vocal. He uses the bass to create atmoshere and make the song breathe. He creates bass lines which are interesting and inspiring as well as doing the above. He varies his bass lines throughout the song in a compelling way, with many rhythmic, melodic and harmonic accents and grace notes. He improvises and jazzes up his bass lines in a live setting which adds a lot of interest to the interplay with the rest of the band. He gets good tones. He plays very sensitively and knows when to accent and when to hold back. Most of all, he understands the multiple roles of the bass and uses them appropriately and to maximum effect in the song. I believe he does this instinctively. I think he's a bit of a genius on bass. What do you think?
I couldn't agree more with all of the above sliddx. As well as most of the Police stuff; one can almost forgive the daft high pitch reggae'ish vocals, I really like his Nothing like the sun solo album with him on bass and a stellar lineup of musicians playing on it. Good point about songwriter bassplayers versus muso bass players. I find that as with guitards noodly players are often at their best playing on other people's material. Tony Levin+ Peter Gabriel( and just about everything else he's played on), Steve Vai+ Zappa are perfect examples for me.

    OldGit

I can also only echo the sentiments of many of those already on here. I had the pleasure of meeting OldGit briefly at a bass bash in Northampton and had a very enjoyable chat as one old git to another, as were our few exchanges on the forum. A really nice guy in person as well as on Basschat. One of the best contributors on here and now sadly missed. Much love and sympathy to Mrs OG and family Mike
  12. I can't make it on Sunday but have seen Nearly Dan at the Jazz Cafe a couple of times and would go if I could. Great band, nice venue but the bass player will be the one with the Burberry baseball hat if I recall.
  13. Paranoid Black Sabbath age 15 at Green St Green village hall at a birthday party. Played on a Kay precision bass copy, Fal 50 watt PA amp head through a 4ft tall 2x12 reflex cab very loudly. ...followed by Highway Star, Rock and Roll Whole lotta Rosie yadda yadda yadda. I thought that I'd died and gone to long hair and cheesecloth heaven. Ah nostalgia ain't wot it used to be.
  14.
I heard through the grapevine that Bootsy's Funk University is not as good as expected. To be honest, this doesn't surprise me, as I think you can show people how to play a funk groove, but to actually make it sound funky is all about the individual and what their musical upbringing is. In other words, you are what you listen to. I can't play metal to save my life. Nor reggae, punk, etc. I honestly don't think think you can 'teach' someone to play funk, unless they have been into it for many years. I know this is similar to a previous 'can you learn to groove' thread. but I think the Funk Uni might be a flop. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
"I can't play metal to save my life. Nor reggae, punk, etc." I can play funk and all of the above. just not necessarily in the right song in the right band at the right time, nor always with the right notes in the right order. I think that one can learn to play funky, in the same way that you can learn to play fast, but getting a good slow groove or being able to come up with a cool funk line is a very rare natural gift akin to perfect pitch or perfect timing for a drummer. It can be attained through listening and training but is anyone actually born funky? We do Good Times a couple of Jacksons, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Kool and the Gang songs in my function band. Love playing them and we do a pretty good job but it's taken a fair amount of work.
  15.
This just shows how good he was...not perfect but it breathes and swings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld-MFjV8_Yw...feature=related
Beat me to it. I'm not a big Queen fan but it's a fantastic bass part isn't it
  16.
TRADE FEELER: Complete collection of big-name British musos 1963-2010. Trade for Belgian Beer / Chocolate / Historic Towns / Meuse Valley / Ardennes, etc. Cash adjustment from me.
Don't forget to throw in Tin Tin poirot but perhaps not Plastic Bertrand
  17.
I forgot to add - the Frog Chorus? Silly Love Songs? Simply Having A wonderful Christmas Time? what utter sh*te.
Arguably so (you forgot to mention C Moon!) but great bassline on silly love songs
  18. Used to be my local when we lived in Clarendon Drive mid to late '80s. Last gig I saw there was Wilko Johnson. Ah nostalgia isn't what it used to be... Hope you had a good gig there
  19. Funktastic mate! Can't make it tonight but would like to come and see your band playing in a pub sometime
  20.
I think he's great but slightly overrated. Later stuff was very good.
Ah Wings! The band the Beatles could have been A. Partridge sorry just seen post above
  21.
Wow what a striking bass. I'd love to try one. I have a new set of Dingwall 6 string bass strings if anyone wants them ? I can't use them they're all weird and tapered. I acquired them with an Ebay purchase a while back. Cant remember the details off hand but I'll dig them out if anyone is interested
So does nobody want these strings then?
  22.
I have my markbass SA450 flat. You can hear everything. Might give the mids a whirl though as ther are the extra ones? I wonder what they would do?
I find that I have everything pretty much flat (12o'clock) on my markbass combo and boosting the Low mid a little really cuts through. Haven't found much use for the high mid knob yet though
  23. I'm sure that it will (party for friends of friends) but have a great day and well done for getting it all organised. I wish that I could have come along. Look forward to the after match reports and pics. Mike
