1.
Sad but true, sad but true...
Oddly, the only 100% bone fide cock I ever came across in an amateur band (in fact, in any band I've played in) was the band that ended up getting a modicum of success (praised on Radio 6, album reviews in the NME, 'Prog' magazine etc.) Mind you, I'd actually put him in the 'prick' category, rather than a cock so maybe that doesn't count. I'd left before the 'success' tho, because of his abundant prickitude. Actually, all the band had left by then, and he'd recruited some other hapless drones to back him up.
2.
So is it just a Klon with a clean blend or is there more to it than that?
According to the blurb on the EHX website... "The Electro Harmonix Bass Soul Food takes the original guitar-focused Soul Food and adds in low end definition and punch to make it better suit a bass guitar. From a soft clean boost to a medium gain transparent overdrive this 'Klon-like' drive has been made from the ground up to work the best with lower frequencies." Which seems to suggest some tweaking to pass more bass, perhaps changing the decoupling capacitors ? I've not seen any schematics yet.
3. I think your bog-standard RAT looks very cool.
4. I had an interesting 'audition' recently...I don't know if this is odd or not, maybe it's not. Saw an ad on Gumtree, got in contact and was asked to record a bass part to a tune the recruiter had on Soundcloud. The outfit (although I suspect it was one person) was a very 'electronica', minimal kind of thing and the tune already had a synth bassline on it. So, I did what I thought was needed - kept it on the back burner during the verse and did something counterpoint-ish on the more up-tempo verse parts. Two days later I get a reply saying I'm not what they're looking for... Far enough, but I can't help feeling I didn't get a decent hearing...certainty not the way I'd run things.
5.
sorry Ahpook didn't word that clearly Should have asked what manufacturer the other 2 12ax7 tubes are. I'm pretty sure i read somwhere they were EH types Dave
Aaah, don't know - can't speak from experience - my two Ampeg preamps have both had a mixture of valves in them, some no-name, some EHX, some Groove Tubes, which suggests to me that they've been revalved in the past
6.
Yeh pretty amazing!
Have they ever played in the UK ?
7.
The problem is that the recent years are less likely to have provided younger people with a 'golden era of rock and roll' in the same way. Their youthfull obsessions that they will take through life are more likely to take the form of RAP, R&B, computer games or gang violence or whatever...
Is it really a problem ? If some people didn't want to make music distinct from what had come before then music wouldn't develop (you could argue that any artform would sagnate if people didn't strive approach it in a novel way). I'm sure there's plenty of younger people who would argue that their favourite music belongs to a golden era, and they'd be right, I'm sure. I'm not sure I understand some contemporary music, but in a way I'm glad I don't - if I did, then it's being done wrong !
8. I wouldn't step on stage with the guy if he's going to carry on like that. He's either not ready or doesn't care enough to make the effort.
9.
I had a DHA, and I wasn't a fan. Same with the Darkglass Vintage. The EHX Bass Soul Food, however, is really nice. I think that one would probably do what you want, and it's only about £60.
I'm very impressed with the EHX Bass Soul Food as well, and couldn't get into the DHA pedals I tried (perhaps the two are connected....but I found both the DHA pedals I owned to be very noisy), deffo worth a punt given how comparatively cheap the EHX pedal is.
10. All three are 12ax7 valves. I've always had great service from Watford Valves - worth dropping them an email.
11.
Yep and that's the reason Alembic started making those classic basses with a point...
Haha - there's a point to the point ! Thanks for the info
12.
These look fantastic but I've always thought that the point on the bottom must make them completely impractical....
I think if you had a bass that nice you'd have it on a stand wouldn't you ?
13. Epiphone Jack Casady ?
14. Hey, someone else is up at this time of day What a lovely-looking bass. Superb wood.
15. Now that's a nice surprise - what a lovely surprise. Hurrah for wives Good music too, just listening to some now. Excellent band name !
16.
I just played with one and... I like it! It covers very well the range between clean to just-a-bit-of-dirt to mild overdrive. The tone control is interesting, it really shapes the sound. I am having one of these, please.
I'm very pleased with mine - you're right, it's great for the 'just breaking up' sounds. Haven't had a chance to play at gigging volume as yet, but it sounds promising.
17. Beautiful - Overwater do make some splendid basses
18. I'll get the kettle on...
19. Galveston, Oh Galveston.
20. Met up with Jack today to buy his MXR Bass Preamp - thoroughly nice chap and a pleasure to do business with.
21.
Where do you think the camera man's sitting?
22. Not much to add to what's been said already. First and foremost you need to be heard, if your sound doesn't work live then you'll not be heard, so......
23.
Is that Neil Pearts garage ??
Naaah, where's the red barchetta ?
24. Lovely
25. I just live with the hum, such as it is...I never really notice it.
