  1. Have the jack socket moved to the side of the bass, or restrain your enthusiasm.
  2. Yes indeed (although less of the 'more experienced', please; folks'll be thinking I'm old or summit..!). I'm not much bothered about maps 'n stuff; to me, a passing harmonic will sound good if the intonation and fingering is good, but will sound 'off' if the fingering is duff, whatever the note being played. It becomes rather instinctive, I find, and is integrated into my choice of notes to play all the time, giving an 'individual' feel to the whole thing, whatever the piece being played. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, though..!
  3. This arrived today; it's splendid, and well worth the wait..! A slim volume, easy to manipulate, containing a very interesting mix of both classical pieces and more modern works. Very well laid out, so it's easy to read, with both standard notation and Tab; I like to work out the score, then check 'my' version against the Tab. I've not (yet...) downloaded the audio tracks; I'll do that later. I'm very far from being a proficient player, but these studies are well worth working on; they really are charming, and are at tempos that are slow enough to encourage concentration on getting it right. I'm going to start on 'It's Lovely To Hear Your Voice', and also 'Imagine', with an intriguing shift from 2/4 to 3/4 and back. Many thanks, Rob, for having put this collection together, and so well. My thumb is well and truly up, and my hat duly doffed.
  4. I'm of the opinion that, as a band, one plays exactly how one wants to. Nothing is sacred. Playing like the original is fine, too, if that's what the band want to do.
  5. Tar and feathering..? Isn't that a tad ungrateful..? ... Good luck with the sale.
  6. Have you any examples to illustrate this..? We're discussing bias adjustment as a routine maintenance task, not the pre-set bias set by the manufacturer, and most unlikely to need attention, unlike a valve amp. It's true I've not been servicing amps for a couple of decades, but in my previous experience in both hifi (Cambridge Audio...) and as a music technician (most makes...), I never came across the need for biasing any SS amps, unless setting up as part of the manufacturing process, never as a maintenance task. Has this changed..?
  7. If you want this done, you may need to post a 'Wanted' ad. You may have to 'bump' it now and again, though.
  8. Fixed.
  9. Approx 15 miles from Witney, it seems.
  10. No, these amps are mains-powered only.
  11. Any good for base metal..?
  12. Good evening, Tony, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  13. Discussion as to the importance of a name ... Romeo And Juliet, Act II, Scene II ...
  14. It would be helpful (and maybe a partial defence against a discrimination issue...) to explain exactly why these factors are part of the requirement. How would an ad for a white male bassist be received by black musicians..? There may be a good reason; what would that be, please..?
  15. I bought a four-channel headphone amp and a matching studio control unit from Mike. All in original boxes, inside a stout containing box, all arrived swiftly in France in perfect condition. Very complete, with all the doc and power supplies. A quality affair, treated promptly and in the most friendly manner; a real pleasure. Thanks, Mike, you are hereby declared to be, in my view, a Good Egg.
  16. My dose of new music comes mainly from the monthly Basschat Composition Challenge, where I come across some very fine stuff, of all and no genres. An inexhaustible source, it would appear. I've not listened to the radio since the Home Service was switched off.
  17. OK, here's my contribution to the August 2018 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by last month's winner: Bleat. Two synths, trebled up, and vocals from Bryn and Clara. A tiny spot of ride from Superior drums and that's all. Umbrellas used to be made from bits of whale, y'know. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.
  18. Mid '70s, I was playing in a variety band around Western France. Regular week-end work, especially during summer. We had a rare w/e 'off', so I arranged a short trip back to Blighty, to see family and friends. The bass player (Gégé...) and saxo/flute (Joël...) came with me, for the ride. All went well until the ferry back on the Friday. One heck of a storm blew up, and the ferry was unable to dock into St Malo; we had to circle around the Isle of Jersey for thirty-six hours, being tossed about like a cork. The cabins were all opened up, as was the cafeteria (although few had any appetite at all, and keeping a plate on the table, or its contents on the plate, was just about impossible...).It was the first, and only, time that I actually saw folks that were green. Joël lay in a bunk the whole time, suffering the martyr. We were to play, Saturday evening. Pre-mobile phones, of course, but I managed to get a 'phone call from the ship to our BL, explaining that we would not be able to meet the tour bus; he would have to find deps for the three of us. We were sacked, all three of us, at our next meeting, for having missed the gig. Happy daze.
  19. Well, it really doesn't come any better than that..! Thanks for posting; just what I need with my 'brunch' (but my tea is now cold...). Perfection on a stick, from all of 'em. I would really like to be a fly on the wall during their rehearsals. Good (nay; Great...) Stuff.
  20. Offers and trade propositions posted in 'For Sale' ads are systematically deleted. They are to be made by Private Message (PM...) only. Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
  21. The System won't let me 'like' as many times as is deserved, so have a balloon bouquet' instead...
  22. A trade is a purchase, really, but paid with something other than normal currency. It's an exchange of values. In theory, the person receiving should be paying local taxes, too. Why should a trade be any different to a monetary sale..? The debate as to why one has taxes on anything at all is a different one.
