1.
About an hour after this poll opened 3 people had voted and I had received 3 votes. I promptly handed in my resignation to my boss in anticipation of the fame and fortune that undoubtedly comes with winning this competition. Now that 8 more people have voted and I've not received a single other vote I've had to come crawling back to my boss and beg for my job back - that wasn't pleasant!
That's nothing; Lenny has put in an option for a custom 747 in anticipation of his World Tour.
  2.
... P.S. I am so not a Hippy.
[sharedmedia=core:attachments:167485] S'OK, I don't hold grudges. It is that good, though.
  3. Voted ... ... and, whilst I'm here, don't forget to hop along to admire the photos proposed for the January Photo Challenge, to be found here ... January Photo Challenge ... ... and vote for your favourite. This month's theme..? 4. From a personal point of view, I've never been one for dancing, and associate music more with the concept of 'concert', where the attention is focussed more on 'listening'. Not only modern (rock..?), but all music, from classical orchestral, through opera to jazz and folk, and all stops in between. I've never, of my own volition, gone into a pub, still less to jump about (good gracious, what a strange idea..!) unless as a member of a band playing there. I can grasp (just about...) the idea of others getting some enjoyment from dancing, but, to me, the pleasure of music is in the concentration, the isolation, the intensity, and cannot (or, at least, is very difficult to ...) be shared. Live music, in the concert scene, is probably almost as active as years ago, except maybe in the few Golden Years of the late '60s, early '70s. Discos and such scotched the live scene after that for those wanting to gyrate, but concerts have kept up, albeit very modestly. I rather think that it has always been thus; no great change.
  5.
If I had to stop gigging, my only option would be drugs. I would be so depressed...
I'm not sure that you're 'into' wisdom; it may be too early yet, but could I respectfully suggest that, sooner or later, and certainly sooner than you'd like, gigging, and even playing the bass at all, will no longer be an option. The old 'Hope I die before I get old' and 'Pegging out on stage' are all well and good, but it very, very rarely works out that way. There is still time to seriously sit yourself down, maybe with folks close to you, and work out an 'exit strategy', to be called upon in due course. Other interests..? If there are none, see if any could be envisaged. Finances..? Work out any impact and see how to adjust. Keeping as fit and active as the years permit..? How about looking into fitness clubs or the like. Write up your memoires and get 'em published ("Life in Blue and other stories"..? No..? Think up your own...). Retirement comes to us all, and is, for many, a shock to the system. The best time to get accustomed is beforehand, while there is still time. Too sombre..? Not to be thought about..? Maybe. Not yet. Not quite, but soon. You won't be doing what you're doing in 30 years time. Just sayin'; respect.

  7.
Well just to clarify this thread is/was about the backline being louder than the pa system that was meant to be handling the show, non of my comments apply to a gig where the bass rig is front of house!
None the less, the original question was 'Why such powerful amps..?', to which some have replied that they only use one amp, big enough for the 'backline only' gigs, and the same rig, turned down if necessary, for any FOH gigs. Seems reasonable to me.

I asked Dave to prepare for me a custom pair of hi-fi cables, RCA phono to mono jack. A high quality result, after having together gone over the various options best suited for my individual needs, promptly sent to France and perfectly adapted; all at a reasonable cost. Thanks, Dave; not the first time I've been impressed by your services, and probably not the last. Highly recommended.
  9. Pull away, young lad; pull away. Early daze yet; there is still time to avert the catastrophe and restore balance and order to our Universe. The Forces of Write will win through, Chaos will be banished back to the Deep Dark from whence it sprung. Maybe not this time, maybe not in my time, but True Tempo will out, and reign Master of all in the fullness of time. Enjoy the spoils whilst you may; the victory is ours in the Long Game. In the mean time, here's a little light music ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBlFHuCzPgY
  10.
If it's a long thread that's been going for a good while I'll sometimes contribute only to find I made exactly the same comment weeks or even months earlier. Which is a bit embarrassing to say the least.
You wrote that last week, too.
  11.
Look, Dad. I thought we had an agreement......
Heck, I'm scared. Level peggings with Lenny..! How can I explain to the few friends I have left..? Is there a 'slush fund' I'm unaware of..? Poor ol' Rikki, too; he seemed such a nice chap. I'll check with Skol; there's surely some mix-up here. Maybe it's my headphones..? No, they don't appear to be contaminated. An elaborate BC joke..? Aha..! Yes; that's it, surely..! Come on, lads, the best are the shortest. Give over; you've 'ad yer laff. Put the voting back as it should be. Lads..? Lads..? Anyone..? Ooo errr...
  12.
...it really is that difficult to pick out what I am singing !!
[sharedmedia=core:attachments:167485] Yes, consider the old, frail and infirm that would glean much pleasure from understanding the tuneful mumblings presented here, month after month. Some of it may even be wisdom, who'd know..?
  13.
Fewer. Given how little time we have left, I thought I'd better point that out.
Less time; fewer seconds. My apologies for the ambiguity. Tick - tock ...
  14.
Why I oughta!!!
I concur; you oughta. We keep telling you, and there's no point in putting it off. It's for your own good, and you know it makes sense. Just bite the bullet and do the Right Thing.
  15.
Like I said :-)
[sharedmedia=core:attachments:167485] Respect.
  16. We are all but chaff in the wind. The Pharaohs thought to have bought into immortality with their pyramids, most of which were pillaged by their successors. The fleeting 15 minutes afforded by Mr. Warhol have become less than 15 seconds, and reducing as I type. All is vanity, and in vain. The whole of mankind's existence is but a blink compared to the reign of the dinosaurs. They, too, probably thought they'd be around for a while. Make the most of your time here, whilst you're able; the clock is ticking down the seconds, there's less left than you think. ... ... and now even less. ... Tick - tock - tick - tock ...
  17.
Where does the idea that bass amplification has to be 4x more powerful than the sum total of the rest of the backline come from then?
Manufacturers of (some...) bass amps, and gullible bass amp-buying consumers.
  18. Cheers. There's a hidden advantage in doing it; I get to listen to all the tracks, several times over each. You folks astound me each and every month with the diversity and quality of your offerings. Modern music is not dead (Well, that being said, sometimes Lenny limps a bit, but no need yet for a merciful ending. Not yet. Not quite. Nearly, though ...).
  19.
I'd always heard the complete opposite about bass frequencies. That they didn't tend to travel very far unless you put a lot of watts into them. Say, 500 or so. So I kind of assumed a sub 50 watt bass amp would be nigh on silent beyond, say, 20 feet.
Try it out yourself. Put on any modern music disk, moderate volume, then leave your flat and listen to what you hear as you get farther and farther away. I'll be bold and guess that the highs will disappear almost immediately out of the room, but the lows you'll be able to hear down the corridor; maybe even in the lift. Bass frequencies are used by oceanic mammals such as whales and the like to send signals over thousands of miles of sea. Bass travels very easily, very far, and is very difficult to totally absorb in a domestic setting. Use a headset or move, as have suggested others, would be the best solution. Hope this helps.

The riff repeats, but allows the vocals to establish the theme, as the solid drums and deep bass hold their fire for the while. A chorus, with backing vocals, ends in a riff, followed by another verse and chorus. A break as the lyrics change to a promiscuous whisper, which turn into a solo spot for electric violin-effect and swooping guitars to jostle over syncopated backing from the rhythm section. A complete change as the tempo rocks up to a straight power rock beat, driving the lyrics forward in a convincingly heavy style, through another verse to a final chorus and a terminal punctuation. Many distant souvenirs are evoked, as this production borrows from a rich culture of prog rock. There are elements of early Genesis, a somewhat strained vocal line resuscitating memories of a certain Lemmy, a bass line in a style not unlike one Entwistle; the list of inspirations goes on, compliments all. A very full structure, played with mastery on all instruments to create a complete opus, covering a wide gamut of techniques with brio. Complex, and not easy to bring off with such resounding poise, and fully aligned with both pictures, as a bonus. Excellent; I look forward to the double album, cover art by Roger Dean, who else..? Here endeth my ramblings (ouf..!) for this month; more next time, I hope. Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

There is a wandering (wondering..?) bassist walking with a very hesitant gait, the whole to underpin and undermine the spoken, rather than sung, vocals. The lyrics are, for the most part, pretty comprehensible, despite the heavy delays and other effects, in open contrast to the backing, purveying certain wisdoms gleaned from common observation of humankind. We started off with a certain tension; this gradually increases as the cacophony reaches to surpass itself at every moment. Unfortunately, just as the texts were beginning to reveal their inner truths, the now frantic hullabaloo comes to an abrupt and equally discordant end. Another in the troubling saga of pieces created from who knows what disturbed genius, created with evident intent to force one to listen very carefully for any hint of normality, any inkling of substance, any chink in the densely-woven chain-mail keeping the listener from slipping into any previously-trodden path. Yes, the byways here are tangled thickets. Yes, there are thorns that rip the soft calves. Yes, the sodden swamps and marshes hold us in a suction grip, unable to lift our feet to tap the slightest rhythm. Worth the journey..? Maybe, just like any bleary-eyed journey home after a wild pub crawl in the full force of an East Coast rain-stormy night, one is, indeed, glad when it's over and one can, at last, rest one's head on the unyielding front door's step and drop off into oblivion. Having listened through, carefully, several times, I can assure with conviction that the hidden meaning of Life and the Universe has, as yet, not been fully revealed to me. Maybe another couple of plays..? Nah, not tonight, at any rate. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Exit Splashtown', from Doctor J ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

The chords play out in a gracious sequence, until augmented by echoing piano 'drops' as promised in the title, and a shimmering lonely pipe. The haunting melody calls up added percussions to shift around our ears, then drops away to leave the percussive elements to drift away with the keys, to the desolate croaking of a bullfrog. Stately, imposing, bold, the various elements weaving in and out of the structure each hold our attention, only to be replaced by yet another aspect, all the while maintaining the central pedestrian pace and pearl-grey theme. The whole is knit together in one continuous tapestry, slowly swirling around in imaginary mists as the prismatic droplets pose their rainbow colours here and there. Impeccable execution, very true to the picture chosen, and showing a wealth of diversity over a solid concept. A beautiful piece. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Eruption', from Leonard Smalls ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

Once through and the vocals come in, in true bar blues fashion, with an authentic, blues complaint. The rhythm pounds on, with divers interspersions from the piano and guitar, and appropriate backing vocals thickening the sung lyrics at times. A conclusion is reached over a harmonised vocal chord in guise of exit. The format is not new, but then, the blues are eternal, I suppose. This version is true to genre, with a credible choice of instrumentation, played quite within the vein, and a legitimate vocal performance with no operatic pretensions. In equally true manner, the lyrics are all but incomprehensible, although a vague theme comes through. I could borrow a phrase which could well be fitting enough in describing this as 'Mighty Meaty, Big and Bouncy'. I think that's quite compliment enough, maybe..? Altogether a jolly romp and rollick, in rock and roll style. Good work. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Drops', from Mornats ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas
