1.
I can't get on with Roto strings, they just go dead too quickly, have you tried Elites Lozz?
I have Pete, nice but no other brand that I`ve tried - yet - can quite get that Roto sound. Elites I found to be quite close, as are DR Fat Beams and Dean Markley Blue Steels but Rotos still edge it for me. It just gets on my nerves that they die so quickly.
2. Coming over all Nikki Sixx on us eh, Tim?
3.
I just did my first rehearsal with EBMM Cobalt Flats. Sounded brilliant this morning- loads of fundamental with a lively bite at the top. Very happy!
That`s good to hear as I`ve just ordered a set for my "at home bass"
4. In my band we`re currently "on-hold" waiting for the singer to have a stent put in his heart. As such haven`t picked up my gigging bass since, well our last gig at the start of October, have just been playing my "at home bass". Anyway, as things are looking likely we`ll be back to gigging at the end of this month I`ve just put a new set of strings on my gigging bass as I have a pretty free weekend, and was amazed at the difference in set-up compared to my at home bass. Both are the same bass, 2015 US Standard Precision, but the height of the strings and the neck-relief are so much more on the gigger - probably cos I tend to hit very hard live. Anyone else do this, have basses set up differently, fo different reasons/uses? Btw I have an at home bass so I don`t have to swap strings too often, I get about a month out of a set of Rotos on the gigger, if I used that one at home as well I`d probably only get about 2 weeks from them.
5.
Had a word with Alex about it and apparently he thinks the Midget T is arguably a better match for the Super Compact than the original Compact
In that case it will be awesome - I had a Gen 2 Midget/Compact set-up and that was great, so if Alex reckons this pairing will be better, well be prepared for a very daft grin that lasts for the whole rehearsal.
6. Possibly a live version, if they de-tune so the singer can get his vocals in range, but I`ve only ever heard it in F.
7. Interesting, I`d not heard that - and luckily for me also not experienced it from my own TH as I`ve DI`d many times from it.
8. Just sold Col a Barefaced Retro Four10. He came in with a suitable offer, and then collected the same afternoon. Good transaction.
9. A very long trip is all I can say. Hopefully I`ve got to the end of it, as was pretty much there, did a swap of gear and found that I preferred the previous. So my rig now consists of Fender Precision strung with Rotosound Steel Rounds, into a Sansamp Bass Driver, into an Aguilar Tonehammer Preamp Pedal, into an Aguilar AG500, into a Barefaced Big Twin 2. This way I can DI to FOH knowing that what I hear is what they`ll get too, plus I can use the pedals with provided rigs. Its funny but every time I go for the more traditional sounding gear - which is what I`ve preferred throughout my playing history - I realise that for the band I`m in I need a much clearer/cleaner set-up, bizarrely so that the gain/drive I use comes across properly. The more vintagey/traditionally voiced gear seems to colour the sound too much. The only thing that`s steered me other than trying gear out myself was when we recorded our second album. The producer put a Sansamp in the line and although up to that point I hadn`t been using one i thought seeing as we went to him specifically for his sound/production I`d go with it - and what a good move that was. Went straight out and bought one after that. Soundwise, well I suppose it`s somewhere between JJ Burnell, Bruce Foxton & Duff McKagan. Gainy, driven, with a lot of top-end twang on it so that when the guitar solos the backside of the song doesn`t drop out.
10. I look after my basses, unless being used my gigging ones are kept in cases, but if a ding happens it`s legit road-wear so I`m not going to be fussed.
11. I don`t know about the techie stuff too much Col, but I pair these cabs together into a 4ohm amp and they`re fine. It was Alex at BFHQ that advised me to go down this route if using a 4ohm amp. I remember reading a post that another Basschatter, Jennie Innie put up, about pairing a 12ohm Retro Two10 with a BF Compact - she put up a soundclip and it was pretty nice.
12.
That is rotten! I've only had good luck with GAK, so I'm sure they will put it right.
Same here, they`ve been very helpful with me over the years.
13. A shame but I think he`s made the right decision. I`m just gutted that I never got round to seeing Quo with the pair of them. I`m sure musically they`ll still be as good, but Quo really is Francis & Rossi (plus Rhino I suppose, he`s been there for years now).
14. Without thinking about it I couldn`t say how many times each bit was repeated but I could easily play our whole set solo.
15. In an old band the guitarist was a nightmare for all this. It would take him 3 or 4 days to reply to anything, which if asked on a Tues if we could do a short notice Fri gig, answering on Sat was pretty much a waste of time. He also proudly announced once that he`d updated the website, and indeed he had, for the gig before last, to the gig we`d last played, so only Dr Who would be able to go to it! And the best, he once sent a text asking if I could do a gig on the 14th. I asked, the 14th of which month. The reply was "yeah". My reply was that the answer to the question, the 14th of which month was not yeah. The reply was "of course dude". So my reply was, the 14th of which f*cking month in which f*cking year and at what f*cking venue do you want me to play a f*cking gig? I got all the details back straightaway. Sometimes it seems you have to be specific.
16. I put up a Wanted Ad for a Sansamp BDDI V1, Chris replied, deal sorted pretty quickly on Monday evening. Item arrived today very well packaged. Good transaction all round.
17. Yeah Jonesy used a Fender Twin in The Sex Pistols, but his must have had some kind of gain/drive on it. The one we had was clinically clean, couldn`t be pushed into breakup at all, no gain or drive on it. Sounded rotten on our version of Ace of Spades.
18. Luckily none of us. A good example, we`ve just arranged the recording, mixing and intended release date of our next album this morning, within the space of 20mins.
19. Rather than limit yourself to an 8ohm cab look at the cab that best suits, then get a splitter cable/box from our very own OBBM that will enable you to connect two 4ohm cabs to a 4ohm amp, if you decide you need another cab. You just plug two ordinary speakon leads into it, then the box connects to the amp, so if only using one cab, just use one lead without the box.
20. In terms of what it was used for, a Fender Twin that had no gain or drive, when it was a provided amp for my old punk covers band. The Sex Pistols, Clash, Anti Nowhere League etc don`t sound great on a clean guitar.
21. I really like the Gibson Classic 57 Plus. At quiet volumes it sounds a bit insipid, but push your amp and it comes alive.
22.
To add to the above, IME mid-week gigs, unless your band (or one of the other bands on the bill) has a sizeable following, are a complete waste of time. At best you play to a handful of totally disinterested punters. Stick to Friday and Saturday nights (plus Sunday or Thursday at a push if the bands and/or venue has the right reputation) and leave it at that.
Pretty much nails ot for me.
23. Our drummer is more than good, so if he drops a beat - which is a rarity anyway - we know he`ll be back in with the song within a couple more beats so we just keep going. At the pace we play there`s no point in all trying to change to what`s happened, especially when we know how quickly he`ll sort it.
