1. Also add parts of Myopia and Please Don't Touch! Don't think there was anything from Trespass though. Great to see Lee Pomeroy on bass, guitar, bass pedals, and a Shergold double-neck bass/12-string. And backing vocals! I used to do his job in Genesis tribs so know what a faff it all is. (The Shergold looked a bit modded though). Also he plays lefty but strung righty so it's impossible to tell what he's really up to.
2.
Dont know why it is but playing a tune with a lot of open strings really kicks my arse. Its like I need to be fretting a note or otherwise I mess up. Its bloody frustrating as I love the sound of the open strings ala James Jamerson but whenever I play I sort of transpose it so I am fretting the notes ( all but the E obviously ). Why do you think I struggle with open strings?
Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead etc recently said "You've gotta have a damn good reason to play an open string on a bass." - not entirely sure why to be honest, I mean look at James Jamerson. Why is it an arse kicking experience? Is it a string muting problem? If so, check out some string muting exercises, scottsbasslessons.com has one for the floating thumb technique and I'm sure you'll find others if you google around. Also useful is using your ring/pinky and/or the fleshy bit of the palm (does this have a name?) for extra string muting. I use my ring finger a lot for string muting, it's kind of based on Gary Willis' three-finger method.
3. I might take my bass to Centre Parcs after reading those. Not sure whether to play sitting down with the bass on my lap, or would you recommend standing with a strap on?
4. Oh look, it's on spotify: Trio Of Doom Update: I can't sit through it all without wanting to break something
5. I was intially exposed to Jaco's first solo album and found it a bit too much - then I discovered his Joni Mitchell material (fantastic), Weather Report (ditto) and have come full circle to appreciate his solo work and more ambitious albums a lot more in recent years. I'm almost at the point where I can sit through all of Trio Of Doom without wanting to break something
6. I missed it, but it's repeated on C4 on Friday 3 May, 2:15am. (And on C4+1 an hour later)
7. Footage of DH is beginning to emerge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DbUPjEbIvA
8. Discovered him after Phish covered "She Thinks I Still Care". What a song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skw4LRMYFCo

10. Great speech! Had me in blah blah, blah blah blah. Is this the best footage there is though?
11. I've used Water Rats in Woking before - http://www.waterrat.co.uk. Like their website, cheap and cheerful.
12.
What pisses me off is that they were "The Police" and then it became "Sting and the Police", which make think he's an arrogant self opinionated twat.
Sting refers to The Police as "my band" on the first disc of "Police Live!", recorded in 1979 soon after second album Reggatta de Blanc was released. So he probably always thought that. Still, when interviewed for the reunion tour in 2007 Stewart Copeland said "well it wouldn't work if it wasn't us three would it" when asked about previous in-band tensions. I didn't see them back in the day, but twice on the reunion tour (Vienna and Wembley), and Sting a few times - first time was on the Nothing But The Sun album, most recently the Back To Bass tour. All enjoyable stuff. Seen Andy Summers and Copeland doing their various solo things as well. Tone Fact: the new bassist in the band I played festivals with last summer was once in a band with Henry Padovani, the original Police guitarist.
13.
any thread started about a vaguely controversial topic will very quickly by inundated with "well this isn't going to end well" type comments, essentially writing off the thread as a car crash before it's even got going
That and "IBTL" Thanks for asking for feedback, mods - much of the time basschat is mine of useful information, laughs and pleasant diversions. However there are certain posters who I wish would follow your lead and request feedback for themselves.
14. I've just been leafing through my Storm/Hipgnosis book, "Walk Away Rene". What an incredible body of work, full of originality, inspiration and wit. His influence on my appreciation of the music is as significant as the musicians he created for.
15. There are clues to why Gail Ann Dorsey and guitarist Mark Plati switch instruments for ATA here http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f19/bowies-ashes-ashes-8719/ and here http://www.bowiewonderworld.com/chats/dbplati0800.htm Conclusion appears to be "we fancied a change". Brilliant song, can't get enough Bowie right now.
16.
What makes a neck 'fast'?
Guy Pratt answers the question quite succinctly in this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_3Jc54k1Es
17. And Chick Corea/Return To Forever has been as much a school of bassists as has Zawinul and Weather Report. I like the early latin-flavoured material and the Chick Corea Elektric Band. ("Space" and "Blue Miles" from "Paint The World" are in my current band's repertoire)
18. If you like Weather Report, check out later Zawinul band material like "Vienna Nights" with Linley Marthe.
19. Here's another "Who Did You Think I Was", the bass-cam extra from a DVD, I believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgFFNXahcg
