1. Gosh. Thanks for the heads-up, but sadly a bit too late notice for me to make it. Just seen a couple of clips on youtube, great stuff. (although the guitar playing sometimes distracts from the bassist)

3. I saw him last year at the Borderline, and that was a cracking gig (it came within a week or two of Ian Anderson's TAAB show at Hammersmith, for double Tull value) I missed it this time around due to triple booking that night (Polar Bear and Chrome Hoof being the other two contenders; Polar Bear won, Hoof were playing Saturday night as well so I saw them then). Do you have a setlist for the show?
4. Say someone can't or won't play all the parts they're supposed to, you employ someone who's carefully (or not it would appear in this case) hidden to cover the bits that the player is missing. That's the stunt musician.
5.
I had an excellent view behind the stage, and I didn't see any stunt drummers at all. What I did see, however, is that halfway through the set Mick Fleetwood joins the rest of the band on the front of the stage with an "acoustic" drumkit. After use, this drumkit gets immediately dismantled by roadies behind the stage - perhaps your friend saw this kit being assembled / dismantled?
re the stunt drummer, this just in from pal at the Brum gig. "The stunt drummer was well concealed and there was a lot of gubbins on the stage behind Mick's massive golden kit. Maybe the stunt drummer had the night off in Manchester? Yes, there was a bit halfway through the gig where they went all 'harking back to the old days just us four jamming together'. They wheeled out a normal sized kit at the front of the stage for Mick (it looked like a child's toy with him sat there). Stevie and Lyndsey were hanging by Mick, all great friends. John McVie was still lurking in a dark bit on his own in the corner. The roadies did take Mick's little kit apart straight afterwards and you could see bits being chucked around backstage. I missed the next few songs because I was distracted by everyone around me pointing and going 'look, they're taking the kit apart' This wasn't the kit that the stunt drummer was playing. He was most definitely still there, beavering away throughout the show. Occasionally catching a carelessly flung sweaty towel or cap from Mick. I am very rarely wrong where stunt drummers are concerned."
6.
On Tuesday night I went to see Fleetwood Mac play at the Phones 4 U (formerly MEN) Arena in Manchester. Although the band gave a fantastic performance overall, I just could not hear any of John McVie at all! To make the point, early on in the set they played The Chain, and when it came to the bass riff, there was none of that driving twang that you associate with the original recording. I could just about make out the rumble of the lower frequencies, but certainly there was a staggering lack of definition from the low mids upwards. Now part of it could be where I was sitting - in the upper circle, side-on, about half way. Another possibility was that because the sound engineer was so focussed on giving Mick Fleetwood a massive, stadium-rock drum sound, he just completely lost the bass in the mix. Did anybody else also attend this gig and have similar feelings about the bass sound? Spoiled for me what is supposed to be a great rhythmn section backbone partnership.
A friend at the recent Birmingham gig was disappointed to see a stunt drummer barely concealed on stage behind Mick. Which is a shame. Ditto not hearing JMcV.
7. A Genesis tribute band I played with took up enough space in a cramped Woolwich pub to get in the way of the entrance to the ladies loo. Also, the pub's floor around their was tiled (say no more). So my part in "Apocalypse in 9/8" also featured "lifting double-neck to allow access to and exit from the khazi" and "chasing bass pedals around the floor". And yes as the evening went on the tiles got wetter (with beer that is) and of course someone went arse over tit spilling their drink everywhere.
8.
I'll second that .... although we got everyone except the keyboard onto the stage. The split level audience is novel as well.
We got a 5-piece band on stage at the 12 Bar, including keys. Someone took a picture looking down from the balcony, it looks like we're queueing for a bus. Same band played at the Water Rats another time. The gear storage room didn't have a ceiling at the time.
9. Lightweights the lot of them. I sold my Moog Taurus I bass pedals (you'll find the ad elsewhere on BC) to a chap in Switzerland. We spent a few emails to and fro over the course of a couple of days finding the best courier/insurance options, struck a deal and it all went according to plan. I had to make my own box (from 2x TV boxes from the local self-storage place) and the bubble wrap/packaging tape man did well out of it as well. Job done.
10. Didn't really get it on the first couple of listens. Much prefer In A Silent Way, which blew my mind when I first heard it.
11.
Where was the wedding? You forgot cider......
St James Church followed by Lyde Hall (apparently they had their late licence altered not long ago, after fights broke out because everyone got so trousered at all-day receptions)
12. I was in Hereford for a wedding on Saturday. I expect to be sober again next Tuesday fortnight (there's some very nice beer out that way. and wine. and fizz...)
13. Probably a bunch of Chapman Stick on there as well. It's recently been released on Blu-Ray and DVD after years of VHS-only status - much to the annoyance of purchasers of the recent So25 box set which included the DVD (no Blu-Ray) version of the show. On the other hand, there's a copy of the "Play" promo video collection included with the Blu-Ray version to sweeten the deal. I'm just glad this show's seeing light of day after all this time (my VHS copy is wearing out). Brilliant stuff.
14.
Already owned it for years.
Oh so YOU bought the other one! (good isn't it!)
15.
Awesome! Jakko's in, haven't heard a pipsqueak about him for over 20 years.
Jakko has been on the Crimson periphery for a while - he fronted a couple of incarnations of 21st Century Schizoid Band, and also did A Scarcity Of Miracles with Fripp and Mel C last year (which also featured TLev and Gav I think)
16.
Just heard about this - awesome news! If only it was Harrison Bruford & Mastelotto......
When I saw a (text only) copy of the DGM Live announcement, referring to 'Mr Bill', I immediately thought Bruford as well. Still, B. Rieflin is a great drummer - he played with the Toyah/Fripp 'Humans' project recently, and also the DGM band Ten Seconds a while back. Look for a track called 'The Last Three Minutes'
17. I'm hoping there'll be a 64 Spoons influence in the new Crim. This lineup us great news, looking forward to the new sounds - some time in late 2014 according to TLev's facebook feed.
18. Serial Fender gig-bag collector Steve came to collect one of the very same from me - even drove into London and up to the front door of my office! Nice one, easy job.
19. I just clicked on a random year (1967) and looked at January. In one month we've got The Herd, Pink Floyd, John Mayall, Cream, Hendrix, Syn (most of pre-Yes), and (omg) Hendrix AND The Who on the same night.
20. Just found this: http://www.themarqueeclub.net/calendar ...a diary of gigs at the Marquee from the mid-60s to the late 80s. Mind-boggling stuff. Which gigs were you at? I like this, here's September 1982: Wed 22 Twelfth Night Sat 25 Marillion Sun 26 Marillion/Pendragon Mon 27 Genesis Tue 28 Marillion Wed 29 Marillion Thu 30 Marillion
21. All of a sudden I've got a spare ticket for Wednesday's show at Brixton Academy. One of my gig chums has pulled out, but I've got his ticket. PM if you fancy taking if off my hands.
22. I'd use a three finger technique, index for the low note then ring and middle (in that order) for the other two. Not easy to start with, but as everyone's said start slow with whatever feels best for you then work up to speed gradually.
23. Having a clearout, I've discovered an Fender gig bag, looks pretty much like this one from what I can tell: http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Fender_Deluxe_Electric_Bass_Guitar_Gig_Bag/FEN-099-1522-006 It's unused and still tagged. Free to whoever wants it, collection only but I'm ok to meet in south-west, south or central London. PM or email [email protected]
