1. Here's some bloke doing the clever bit of Firth in his bedroom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhKqqbmJV_E oh allright - it's me
2.
I saw the musical box a couple of times and they were fantastic, they even have a balding left handed drummer who sings!! I read that Peter Gabriel even took his daughter to see them to show her what Dad used to do. Check em out if you can.
Steve Hackett joined The Musical Box for an encore of "Firth Of Fifth" at the Royal Albert Hall the first time they played there. of course they'd already played it once in the main set. He sat down on stage with a look on his face that said "nice try, but check *this* out" Pretty sure Mike and Tony were the audience that day as well.
3.
I would be in agreement were it not for the frankly hideous Battle of Epping Forest. Such a shame, as the rest of the album is as close to perfection as anything, and the rest of the tracks are probably Genesis' finest.
Also, Firth Of Fifth was a leftover from Foxtrot. Imagine having a song that good as a leftover.
4. Just listened to this version of Supper's Ready for the first time in ages. What has struck me is (a) how much (or how little) actual bass playing there is in there - much of it is bass pedals or cello and (2) the shivers up the spine as the geese fly overhead at 18m47s ... from wikipedia, "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet) ... "Gabble Ratchet" is a reference to the Hounds of Hell; they are usually portrayed as geese, which explains the sound effect heard during this section"
5. Phil's voice couldn't handle the end of "Apocalypse" any more by those days, which is why it was switched back to the more sedate "Afterglow". Sadly the RnB medley happened either way Also, as the two previous concert films (the Mama tour in 1983 and the Three Sides Live film from a couple of years before) both featured the Cage medley, the Wembley film crew were told to use that part of the set to switch film reels in their fancy cameras (a new film format was used to film the gigs). As all 4 Wembley gigs were filmed, the same point was used to change reels. And that's why there's no Cage medley on film from that tour. In fact the transfer to DVD took an effort on the old Genesis forum in the mid 00s to find someone still using the by-then defunct "new" film format, so they could transfer the footage to a useable format...
6.
I've got sunshine in my stomach... is from 'In the Cage'. Which incidentally, is my favourite song of all time. Thought Phil did a killer job with it on the Wembley 86 concert as well.
Wembley was 1987 Although during the 1986 leg of the tour in the USA, the ITC medley was Cage/Quiet Earth/Apocalypse in 9/8, which was pretty cool.
7. Update from the Sonuus facebook page... "Wahoo production should be complete early next week (hurray!). We need to get them to the UK then we will be able to start shipping them to pre-order customers. So hopefully in the last week of November, people will start to get them. (We're also shipping them to the USA too.) Next week, once everything is confirmed we'll start contacting pre-order customers to make payments for their orders. Also, this means it's the last chance to get in on the pre-order deal. Last thing Sunday 18th (first thing Monday 19th), pre-orders will close and the Wahoo will return to the standard price."
8.
Not sure where you went to do your vinyl shopping, but this has not been my experience.
I agree. I get mine from Burning Shed, who are great (if you like their kind of thing). Also, many new vinyl releases will come with a free download of the same music in flac or high-quality mp3, so win/win: vinyl for at home, digital copy for on the move.
9. Most of my recent music buying on physical media (as opposed to downloads) has been on vinyl rather than CD. On top of that I've got a new turntable on my Christmas list... love it!
10. Here's the first song I learnt to play all the way through http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384 And here's the bass tab: http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/metallica-enter-sandman-bass-tab-s19t5 Good for solid 8th-note timing, a couple of string-crossing moments, a juicy flat 5th and head-banging.
11.
Took me a while to get that you were talking about the fretting hand :-D
Oh. I didn't spot that at all. In that case, whatever makes sense at the time.
12. Index and ring, or thumb (not slapped) and middle.
13. And again from that gig - Propaganda doing Dr Mabuse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fEDeyWQqoE
14.
As is this from the same gig. And Anne Dudley is the coolest person in the whole world.
For prog fans, and to extend the Trev connection, that's Alan White and Geoff Downes from Yes on drums and keys there.
15. The editorial accuracy of BP has sadly slipped over time. Like the previous poster I've got every issue except a few missing from the very late 80s/early 90s - for the first time I was forced to put virtual pen to paper when at the end of the most recent Flea interview, reference was made to Louie Artmstrong and Billy Holiday Having said that, I'm still a BP buyer (and now subscriber) over the Brit competition.
16. Massive minus points for the thumb over the top of the neck, 2m07s onwards
17. I use either a Roland Micro Cube or more recently a Roland JC-50 combo. Never had any complaints from the neighbours (some from my girlfriend though), but then again it's a solidly built 1930s apartment block.
18. Also what I loved was that even though they've got a stage a mile wide, as soon they can the four of them are gathered around the drum riser checking each other out.
19. Saw the film last night in big mode at the Vue Xtreme at Westfield. Lots of great memories of the gig night, can't wait for the Bluray. Did you see the 10-string Manson in Nobody's Fault but Mine? whoa. Also the fretless P he used for In My Time Of Dying was awesome too.
20. One of my "without whom" gang as well. Relayer is my favourite - especially Gates Of Delirium. A champion of Rickenbackers, but check out this monster, used on Awaken I believe
21. RiffRaff (http://basschat.co.uk/user/27079-riffraff/) bought my JM-4 Looper, see http://basschat.co.uk/topic/185124-for-sale-line-6-jm4-looper-as-new-sold/. Straightforward negotiation and good communciation, and notified of arrival. Good stuff.
22. Lady came up to me after a first gig with a new band "Hey I really enjoyed your sex moves" I wasn't doing any
23. Tune your A, D, G strings as normal. Then tune the low D so the 5th fret harmonic is the same note as the 12th fret harmonic on your high D string. When you're close, you'll hear the two notes "beating" against each other, and the closer you are the slower the beat frequency. When there's no beats, you're in tune. Simples.
