  1. I don't think so -- although the top strings are noticeable heavy the others aren't nearly heavy enough to go down a full octave, e.g. this 11-56 set is sold for D standard tuning. The bottom 6 of an 8 string set might get you closer, but that .074 will be optimised for a low F# at ~27" scale, and IME that's still a compromise. Also a lot of regular guitar tuners won't fit more than a .060 or so without either drilling out the tuner or unwinding the string.
  2. Learn them together. Theory informs technique and vice versa.
  3. You need to define what value means for you, I think. Are you going to get the most bass for your money? Probably not, but it will likely hold its value in the second hand market more than a lot of brands. Some people like having the brand attached, and that's ok too. (Would I buy one? No, but ymmv.)
  4. Good quality entry-level fanned fret guitar with 25.5"-27" scale. Locking tuners. Set up with a very playable medium-low action. Excellent condition. There are some minor finish blemishes around the faux binding which seem to have come from the factory but nothing you can see from more than a foot away. Only other issue is that the G tuner no longer locks -- it still functions fine as a normal tuner and holds tune with no problems. £300 new, looking for £150. Not really looking for trades or PX as I'm trying to thin the herd slightly but feel free to try me -- could be tempted by a 7 string with a locking trem or a 5 string bass with a 35"+ scale. Collection or may be able to meet in central Glasgow. No case included so would rather not ship, but if you're really keen give me a shout and I can look into it.
  5. Ah, I see you've never seen my attempts at soldering.🙈
  6. Can't speak to whether it's fair but I paid about £60 to get a set of pickups swapped at Strung Out Guitars in Glasgow recently. £25/h seems on the low side for quality labour to me, especially in our current times.
  7. I have two sets of packaging from bass purchases, one from Thomann and one from BC which is from an ibanez originally - free to anyone who can collect in Glasgow G51. They'll be going in the recycling if no-one wants them.
  8. Make sure your thumb is parallel with the string - might take some getting used to if you're not used to that position though.
  9. If it's for headphone practice you might be better off with a standalone pedal? That would widen your options considerably. Darkglass Element springs to mind but there are plenty of alternatives.
  10. thanks for the heads up, I need another drum VST like I need a hole in the head but grabbed some of the midi packs to jam to
  11. Metallic burgundy with tort is certainly a choice that was made...
  12. I doubt you'll hear any noticeable difference between them. I've been very happy with my SSL2 for a similar use case, although that was an opportunistic second hand buy rather than a considered choice.
  13. Is it rattling when you play the open E or when you fret the low F? If it's the latter shimming the nut won't help.
  14. I'm quite impressed that they seem to have taken a 5 string, fretted viola in their stride.
  15. Do you get a nice crisp sound?
  16. Oh yes, good spot! I just saw the matching headstock and put 2 and 2 together to make 5.
  17. Looks like a jazz with exactly the same body shape and a matching headstock...? https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jb_62cc_dr.htm
  18. As a rule of thumb, I recommend discarding any advice targeted at "audiophiles" as it's invariably snake oil garbage.
  19. unfortunate typo/profanity filter collision. GLWTS, looks like a lovely instrument.
  20. My guess is that for people who aren't immersed in the scene, nu-metal is probably one of the last reference points for metal being in the wider mainstream, so they lack the vocabulary to describe e.g. the legions of clones that Meshuggah spawned over the 2010s.
  21. Go for it. I used to play in a band tuned to D standard, moving to a 5 string in standard tuning opened up a bunch of possibilities vs a down tuned 4
  22. Did Valenti not work in the Sadowsky NYC workshop before going solo? Unrelated, I've been wondering if we'll ever get a Metro Express M5-24. I'd be tempted by that.
  23. They can also cover all manner of manufacturing side effects, as well.
