I picked up a KZ6 this week, still getting used to it but it does have a real nice B string. The preamp is... fine? I'm still dialing it in. Can't say I've noticed the asymmetric neck, but I'm very taken with the playability -- it's definitly the most "articulate" bass I've played, very responsive to your technique.

Pick that sounds like double thumbing?
velvetkevorkian replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Accessories and Misc
IME that sound is more about the string hitting the frets, you could try angling your existing pick stroke so it moves towards the bass body, rather than parallel to it?- 1 reply

So there's two different 1/2" models, neither of which is 1/2"?

I think it's because the search field has an autofocus attribute, which causes the browser to scroll to that field when the page loads.

When the spirit is willing but the body ...
velvetkevorkian replied to SamIAm's topic in Bass Guitars
This is very specific to my own back issue, but switching to a classical position when sitting was a big help for me, I think it helped keep my back straighter. -
A proper conversion neck would take this into account and move the nut out an inch, and move the frets accordingly, surely?

Looks like Novax do (or did, not sure if that's current) an aftermarket fanned fret neck with a 35" E: http://www.novaxguitars.com/parts-accessories/necks-bass.html Headstock looks dreadful though

I'm not sure there's any off the shelf neck that does this, but it should be possible. If the scale is calculated correctly I don't see why you'd have to move the bridge. I thought Warmoth used to make something along these lines for guitar but I can't see it now

P-Nut...[cigarette drag] now there's a name I've not heard in a long time (also be careful googling him, there's a prominent Urban Dictionary definition on the first page 😬) -

Having rather fallen off the musical wagon in recent years, I've decided my 2023 resolution is to work through and apply Gary Willis' Fingerboard Harmony, hopefully without getting distracted after the first chapter as I have in the past. Anyone else going to try and make some new practice habits this year? Post them so we can hold each other accountable/comiserate when life gets in the way.

This would be 10x nicer if they didn't leave the wildly mismatched neck laminates showing, imho. Wait, is that even a through neck?

Red Light Spells Danger cover- a question about timing
velvetkevorkian replied to bass_dinger's topic in Theory and Technique
I think the subdivisions are a bit rushed, maybe? When she starts playing straight 8ths it seems less pronounced. During the verse the 1 is in the right place but the others get a little ahead. -

Probably the Spector Legend 6 that has been through several previous BC owners.

Standard tuned bass with low tuned guitars
velvetkevorkian replied to SteveXFR's topic in General Discussion
IIRC Nothing-era Meshuggah would tune their 8 string guitars to low F, with the bass in the same octave. Edit: which @thodrik already mentioned 🙄 -
Sanity Check - 4 to 5 string conversion
velvetkevorkian replied to SamIAm's topic in Repairs and Technical
I didn't do the mod, but I believe this was a Wilkinson 4+1, similar to this one one Reverb. The string tree has a screw (or an allen bolt, I forget) that holds the D string in place. It was a bit of a pain to string up tbh because the bridge tuner didn't have that much room to wind the string on, so you had to hold the string as tightly as possible with pliers, screw it down, and hope you had enough turns left at the bridge to bring it up to pitch, although once it was up to pitch it worked well enough. If you wanted it to be tidy you had to cut the string right after the string tree, too. It did look very cool, but I could never get a decent sound out of the B string on that particular bass unfortunately (I'm pretty sure there weren't any real Fender parts on it, despite what the headstock says). -
Sanity Check - 4 to 5 string conversion
velvetkevorkian replied to SamIAm's topic in Repairs and Technical
I thought this had been done but I'm getting confused about my Ibanez models, it was a Mezzo. I have had a 5 string on a 4 string Precision neck bass*, and my recollection was that it was playable but with very little margin for error -- the nut spacing in particular was very cosy. As others have noted, 1mm on the outside of the G string makes it very easy to pull the string off the edge of the board. I wonder if you could have less space outside of the B and more outside of the G, as IME when fretting you're pushing the string somewhere between straight into the fretboard and towards the floor, but rarely upwards towards the player. *please excuse the crappy pictures and the ink-stained carpet 🙈 -
How have I never seen one of these before? Wow. The string spacing makes it look like 6 strings on a 5 string neck...
-
I don't think so -- although the top strings are noticeable heavy the others aren't nearly heavy enough to go down a full octave, e.g. this 11-56 set is sold for D standard tuning. The bottom 6 of an 8 string set might get you closer, but that .074 will be optimised for a low F# at ~27" scale, and IME that's still a compromise. Also a lot of regular guitar tuners won't fit more than a .060 or so without either drilling out the tuner or unwinding the string.

Learn them together. Theory informs technique and vice versa.
